Red State Update is always good for a laugh. Today they tackle the Oprah controversy with Sarah Palin. Best joke in the video comes in the last segment.
Bristol Palin’s African-american baby daddy speaks out (and promotes his music). This has been making the rounds for a couple of weeks and I’m surprised it hasnt died yet but people are still forwarding it around.
If you need evidence of the death of “Hip-hop” I offer the following two videos. First up is MC Frontalot with a video called “It is pitch dark”. MC Frontalot combines the lyrical skills of a Lupe Fiasco with the social inclinations of Maurice Moss . This is geek rap at its musical best.
On the other side is “Its cold in the D” a scary but heartfelt ode to urban and musical blight.
The nature of the medium has changed the tenor of the message. Two videos posted this month to YouTube show the power and potential impact of online messaging. The first is will.i.am’s inspirational probama (pro-Obama) video which has attracted millions of people with its moving subtext, great music, beautiful celebrities and grass-roots, folksy nature.
The truly transformative power of Internet messaging is its ability to level of the playing field and allow all voices to be heard. Seizing on this power, a group of political activist supporting John McCain, have posted an inspirational and moving video of their own. While lacking some of the production qualities of the will.i.am video, its another moving example of how the Interent is giving voice to impassioned, but previously voiceless Americans.
I really like this video, its kinda old but still very clever. Everytime the stats come on the screen I’m reminded of where the music industry needs to be.
Isnt music a huge part of Internet downloads? Dont music related sites proliferate and spread in much the same way as porn sites? So, where is the music industries Adult Friend Finder? Why is there no Jane’s Guide for music? Someone needs to tell Doug Morris to stop watching online porn and start studying it, it holds many of the answers that could help him save his business.
In a release put this morning Apple acknowledged the much rumored link between AppleTV and YouTube. The release stressed that while AppleTV + YouTube was cool iPhone + YouTube is killer. As the Apple’s marketing machine gears up for next weeks launch of the iPhone I wonder what other announcements are in store. From the 8 hour battery life to YouTube connectivity, Apple seems to have a series of high wow factor announcements up its sleeves.

A couple of weeks ago Viacom decided to sue GooTube for copyright infringement. What would they gain by getting all their content removed form the largest online video site? Nothing. Except the illusion of control and an RIAA like pyrrhic victory over Google, the Internet’s most successful media company.
In the meantime whats not available on YouTube is easily found on any of the 50 other online video sharing sites. Even the biggest online social network, Myspace serves up full episodes of Viacom content. Are they next on Viacom’s court appearance invite list? You can go to Myspace right now and watch full episodes of the Daily Show, Colbert report and one of my favorite, South Park.
Today the good folks at TechCrunch mentioned AllSP.com but didnt note that the videos on AllSP.com are largely hosted on Myspace. The embedded episode is from DailyMotion but you can see the same thing in its entirety via myspace at the link below. This episode is particularly hysterical in its subversive use of almost every hot internet property as part of the story.
The LAT is running a story about the not so secret, YouTube rival being created by News Corp and NBC-Universal, which is set to launch today. This cabal used to include CBS and Viacom but they droppped out somewhere between December and March. Had anyone bothered to ask me, I could’ve told them that their money was better spent on lunches and lap dances.
“Were winning” they say! I’d have to agree.
Our favorite swashbuckling buccaneers over at the Pirate Bay have done it again. These guys have all the swagger, ambition and balls that their name implies. Its not enough that they want to buy an island to freely distribute the digital goodness we all crave, or that they continually embarrass and poke fun at the luddite content industries, now the merry bandits have started a new site dedicated to the Oscars. Aptly named the OscarTorrents the site has helpfully organized torrents of movies that have been nominated for Oscars in all 24 Oscars categories.
GooTube isnt just the domain of scantily clad women, moronic teenage antics and copyright infringement. There’s gold in them thar servers and one nugget was sent to me by the amazing Phasing on Monday. It has captured the mood/feeling of the “whats happening?” crowd and offers some insights into thinking of the “whats next!” crowd.
The good folks at Viacom have sent our friends at GooTube a cease and desist letter, demanding that the service remove 100,000 video clips of the company’s shows. As of this posting Google has desisted from ceasing.
