About
Our Purpose
Inspiring Giving to Build a vital community for everyone.
Our Story
In 2007, a group of affordable housing advocates met, frustrated with short-term, piecemeal solutions to housing issues, and began searching for a way of working together to create holistic, long-term change in the community.
In 2009, with $40,000 and the support of committed local philanthropists, the Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough was established. Since then the Foundation and its donors have invested more than $8.5 million in projects that build community vitality, and has attracted over $15 million in endowed and long-term funds.
Carefully invested, this growing community asset will serve the City and County of Peterborough for generations to come.
The Community Foundation believes that together, we can build a vital community for everyone. With a long-term view of our community and insight into the challenges and opportunities facing Peterborough, the Community Foundation has the knowledge and the staying power needed to address complex issues, from environmental sustainability to housing and homelessness, from support for the arts to care for those in need.
Equity Statement
In its pursuit of a vital community for everyone, the Community Foundation understands that equity must be centred in everything we do. Equity is about recognizing that we all have different starting places due to systemic barriers. Treating people equally, while fair-minded, will not ensure that everyone’s needs are met.
Equity is both a process and an outcome; it is ongoing with no completion date. We need to talk about it so that we can take meaningful action and be held accountable.
The Community Foundation engages in this work by listening to and learning from community members, and strengthening our own equity knowledge, tools, processes, and policies. We are committed to collaborating, learning and sharing with others so that together we can build a vital community for everyone.
