She told of a Portuguese bloodline. Her family came from North Carolina and settled in East Tennessee. My paternal grandmother was so dark that other children were not allowed to play with her in school when she was young. She had straight black hair, brown eyes, and olive skin. My cousin did the 123 and me DNA, and it showed Italian. I did an Ancestry DNA test, and I was expecting Native American, but nothing came up. The Iberian Peninsula came up. No one in our family who has done a DNA test was designated from Africa or South America. It IS possible that Portuguese is, indeed, a true bloodline in the Melungeon families of NC and TN.
