Photos
Posted in General at 9:37 am by Jenni
Since my first post this morning did not contain any photos, I figure I owe the blog some recent pictures. Here are a few of my newest favorites.
1. Motorcycle Man: Jackson thoroughly enjoys riding on his motorcycle and because we practice safety around here, he insists on wearing his helmet every time. The only catch is that he thinks wearing the helmet backwards is the ONLY way to wear a helmet. On the morning this photo was snapped, Jacob spent a good 5 minutes just staring at Jackson like he had 7 heads. I think he’s saying, “Uh. Dude. Your helmet’s on backwards.”
2. Brotherly Love: Neither boy was really happy to take these photos but Josh thought we should snap a couple pictures before they outgrow their matching shirts.
3. Popeye: Jacob does his best Popeye impression.
4. Shhh: I can never get enough pictures of my sleeping babies.
5. Keys and Hands: Two of Jacob’s favorite things. Sadly, the keys broke the other day. It’s hard to find baby toys that are small enough to fit in their hands. These *were* perfect.
6. Snuggle Time: Jackson likes to snuggle on my bed with me and Jacob. However, he refuses to take a picture with us. It’s some of my favorite time with the boys (and the girls – they inevitably join us on the bed too).
Power Month
Posted in Goals at 9:22 am by Jenni
The month of February is shaping up to be very jam packed. It’s so full, in fact, that I started to get a little panicked. So, I decided that I needed a prize at the end of the month to help get me through all that needs to get done. And, since I’ll be working towards a prize, I figured I may as well go for gold and make this a Power Month, an opportunity to jump start a lot of my goals. Here are my goals for this month:
By the end of February 2009, I will:
1. Reach my 30 pound weight loss mini-goal. (As of today, I have 6.2 pounds to lose to reach this goal).
2. I will lose at least 8 pounds.
3. I will complete all 4 home visits and a rough draft of the report for my newest adoption family.
4. I will transition successfully into my new job (even though I will miss the boys fiercely).
5. I will do a 30-day shred workout at least 15 times.
6. I will put another 25% towards that elusive couch.
7. I will complete both training courses for the University of Phoenix and be approved to become a probationary Human Services part time online instructor.
8. I will stay on-points with Weight Watchers.
9. I will design and mail invitations for Jacob’s Dedication Ceremony.
10. I will attend at least one church service at the UU Congregation.
I haven’t decided on a prize yet. On the list of possibilites are:
1. One night away with the family at a resort with an indoor swimming pool or water park.
2. A real date night with Josh and I – dinner at a nice restaurant and movies at the VIP section of the Randolph theater.
3. A trip to the spa for a massage or a spa mani/pedi.
Either way, I have something fun and rewarding to look forward to as a motivator. And, if I accomplish my goals for the month, I’ll be in a much better place physically, professionally, emotionally and spiritually.
My UOP training course is requiring 1-2 hours of online class time 5 days/week plus course work. By far, it’s the most extensive interview process ever. But, the more I participate, the more excited I get. This is a wonderful opportunity to break into the field of college level instruction! With all that’s going on, I may be MIA on the blog for this month. I’ll try to give an update half-way through the month.
Wish me luck!

3 Months!
Posted in Uncategorized at 12:02 am by Jenni
Auntie writes a little note on her blog to Gracie on each of her monthaversaries. As is pretty typical these days, I’ve decided to copy her…
1/29/09
Jacob,
Today you are 3 months old! I don’t know where the time went but you are officially done with your 4th trimester. You aren’t a tiny, squirmy, sleepy newborn anymore. In fact, when Daddy brought you to see Dr. Cox last week for your cold (we all had it and it was easily the worst cold – ever!), you weighed over 15 pounds! You have been wearing 3-6 month clothing for about 1 month now and some of it is already too short and too tight. Sadly, you have your Mama’s feet and you need gigantic socks and shoes. I’m sorry about that.
This month we transitioned you out of the bassinet in our room and into your crib in the room you now share with Jackson. You made the transition quite easily. But then that nasty cold came along and you’ve fallen in love with sleeping semi-upright in your bouncy seat on my bed with me. Most nights you stay in your crib for 4-6 hours before switching to the bouncy. I’m sure we could push you to stay in your crib but I like being able to see you in the middle of the night. Plus, you are still congested from the cold and tend to still choke a little bit. Poor baby.
You are starting to try to reach for toys and you try your very hardest to deliberately push the buttons on your Baby Einstein exersaucer. Auntie and Uncle Cole bought you a jumper but right now it scares you a little bit. I’m sure you’ll be in love with it in a few weeks. You enjoy holding onto little plastic keys and rings and shaking them with all your might. It brings you great joy. Sometimes you show us that you want them by shaking your hand and then furrowing your brows because there was no rattling sound. When we then bring out the keys, your face lights up.
Ah, yes. Your smiles are big now and nothing beats your first smile of the morning or after we haven’t seen you for a few hours. It’s the greatest! You are still battling reflux – I change outfits often each day because I always seem to be the recipient of your pukings. I don’t mind though!!
Your spikey hair is starting to lay flat on it’s own and, sadly, it’s starting to fall out. Sleeping in your bouncy seat has given you a nice bald spot because you shook your head back and forth to get comfy in the seat. I wonder how much hair you’ll lose and if you’ll be completely bald like your brother was for most of his first year. Your eyes are still a gorgeous blue with your Daddy’s eyelashes. I hope they stay blue.
Speaking of your brother, you LOVE him. When he is around you, you are mesmerized by him. The best part is that he LOVES you right back. You are the first thing he asks for when he wakes up and sometimes he gets a panic in his voice when he doesn’t know where you are. Soon enough you’ll be playing together. For now, you seem to enjoy it when he shows you his Transformers. You are also starting to be interested in Luna and Sandy.
This is a bittersweet time of your life for you are growing so very quickly. Each new day brings a surprise and a clearer glimpse into your personality. But it also means that each day brings you further away from your newborn/baby stage. Your brother grew up so quickly and now you are as well! I’m excited to see what this next month will bring!

Governor Ding-Dong Deval
Posted in Uncategorized at 2:56 pm by Josh
In keeping with my devotion to the ever-talented 96.9 radio talk show host Michael Graham, please draw your attention to following quote from his blog today:
“Governor, go stand outside Fidelity as the newly unemployed walk out of the building with their stuff in cardboard boxes and tell them the “emergency” we face is excessive Coca-Cola consumption. ”
He hit the nail on the head. Jenni, did you know that the solution for the children and families your program used to help is higher taxes on M&M’s and Jack Daniels? Wait, wait no – its not for existing fiscal problems, these taxes are for Deval’s NEW programs.

Can we let him actually be president for a little bit first? please?
Posted in Uncategorized at 8:12 am by Josh
Alright, I get it. He’s not Bush. We finally have, after 8 long years, a new president. I young, hip, liberal democrat who also happens to be history-in-the making due to his race. I know, its all very exciting. I can hardly contain my excitement…(insert good ‘ole Irish sarcasm here.)
Seriously though, I feel lucky to be alive during this historic time – I do, honestly. I completely disagree with his politics and I am sick of the media treating him like he’s about to accept a crown of thorns and turn water into wine at the inaugural ball for all to enjoy! But I do feel fortunate and privileged
Having said that, I would like to add this – can we just let him BE president before we start trying to make him a monarch? please? click here
How about we, I don’t know, just focus on the next four years and see if he even DESERVES a second term? I mean, he hasn’t even DONE anything yet? I’m refering to the NY congressman who wants to change the term limits for the Presidency in preparation for Mr. Obama to be our Commander-in-Chief for more than 8 years. I tend to agree with Thomas Jefferson on this topic. Term limits is an important part of our nation’s founding. It helps indentify us as a democracy! It’s not that I don’t want a King Obama, I just don’t want a King at all! Unlike Katie Couric and Chris Mathews, I’m not ready to genuflect. I’m ready to see what happens and I wish President Obama the best and much success. He’s not my savior. He’s my new President. And it would be really great if the liberal media would just recognize that. I’m done with hope and change rhetoric, I would like hard work and results now. I think it’s time.

Top Ten: 1/11/09 – 1/17/09
Posted in Uncategorized at 4:53 pm by Jenni
Despite a horny cat and a nasty cold terrorizing our house these past few days, we had a great week. In no particular order, here is the Brennan Top 10 for the week:
10. Pork Tenderloin with Maple Glaze

Thanks to Heather for this recipe. We made it last Sunday night and it was so easy to make and so tasty to eat. We’ll definitely be making this again soon.
9. Angie’s Asian Pot Roast
I really hate pot roast. It’s often too dry and tasteless for me…until I started making it in the crock pot. Since a roast was on sale this week, I decided to try a new pot roast recipe for the crock pot. Thanks to the September Mommies for this recipe. I made it last night and it was easy enough to make while I tended to a sick Jackson and Jacob. We served it over brown rice and paired it with some Pinot Noir. Perfection!
In case you’re interested, here’s the recipe:
3 lb. roast
2 large onions sliced
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup soy sauce
1/3 cup cider vinegar
2 bay leaves
2-3 cloves minced garlic
1 tsp. grated fresh ginger
1 cup julienned carrots, matchstick size
2 cups sliced button mushrooms
2-3 cups fresh spinach leaves or 2-10 oz. pkgs frozen spinach drained
2 Tbs. cornstarch
Place meat topped with onions in slow cooker.
Combine brown sugar, soy sauce & cinder vinegar. Pour over beef.
Add bay leaves, garlic & ginger.
Cover & cook on high 6-7 hours.
Spread carrots, mushrooms & spinach over beef.
Cover & cook on high 20 minutes
Mix cornstarch with 1/2 cup broth from slow cooker and return to cooker.
Cover & cook 10 minutes.
8. Baby Einstein

After deciding that Jacob’s head and hand control were sufficiently up to par, we brought out Jackson’s old Baby Einstein Exersaucer. Jacob, pure genius that he is, instantly figured out the animal noise buttons and happily played away while his Mama cried in the kitchen over how quickly her babies are growing.
7. Nose Blowing
For quite some time now, Jackson has been “blowing” his nose. The only problem has been that he doesn’t actually blow his nose. Instead, he puts the tissue up to his nose and blows a raspberry with his mouth. As you can imagine, it’s not such an effective method of nose blowing. But, the other day while I was at a job interview, Josh taught Jackson how to actually blow his nose. Josh must have made a hand motion while teaching Jackson because now Jackson’s nose blowings are always paired with a funny hand motion. Watch and you will see:
6. Adoption
You may recall that we have only been fostering Neko. As of this Saturday morning, thought, she is officially ours (for better or for worse). She’s going Wednesday to be spayed. We don’t need anymore baby kitties in our house.
5. Well Done!
After a great day at work on Monday, Josh received a surprise gift from his bosses. It’s always nice to be recognized for just doing what you do.
4. Luna Loves Jabob

3. The Abominable Snow Baby

Despite the blistery cold weather, Gracie graced (ha!) us with her presence Friday night. Her cuteness is just too much!
2. Seven Pounds
On Wednesday I weighed in and had lost 7 pounds in one week. 3.2 pounds were stuff I gained on my 2 week holiday break. My total weight loss in 9 weeks is now 16.8. I only have 13.2 more pounds to go to reach my first goal.
1. You’re Hired!

As of February 3rd, I’ll no longer be unemployed!! I’ll be a part-time Human Services Quality Manager for Riverside Community Care. If you’re interested, here’s a link to my new department!

Date Night #3
Posted in Family Fun at 11:40 am by Josh
Well, I really can’t let the week go by without sharing our date night # 3. Now, we’ve started a tradition of recording these so we can’t stop now!
Jenni planned this one and it was great! She wins the prize for most budget friendly…FREE!
She sent me on a journey through our past by leaving a series of written clues all around our house taped to pictures and memorable items. One clue leading to another and so on until I reached the end and found a journal that we had started years ago. It was a relationship journal chronicling our time together since the very beginning. We had filled out the first few entries but hadn’t touched it in years. So, we took this opportunity to continue our journaling and decided we would write a couple of entries every date night.
We ended the night by enjoying some of Jenni’s delicious low-fat trifle and some of our favorite TV shows – Nip/Tuck and Desperate Housewives.
Thank you hun!

...i think we're slightly disturbed. 🙂

Heat, Cold and Irony
Posted in Uncategorized at 7:23 pm by Jenni
Life in our house over the past 24 hours has been a bit difficult, to say the least. It seems that our precious baby kitty, Neko, is no longer a baby. She’s ready to procreate – NOW. She’s been wandering the house howling nonstop. If she’s not asleep, she’s howling and, apparently, she’s nocturnal. She was up all night last night. There’s no doubt that she is in heat. We quickly made an appointment to finalize her adoption and get her spayed next week.
But, she wasn’t the only one up all night. In true Jackson fashion, he caught a cold from his first week of preschool. When he was in daycare, he caught every single bug that came through that place. So much for breastmilk preventing that sort of thing. Anyways, his cold peaked last night and although he was spared from Croup, his sleep was interupted every 20 minutes or so with a cough or sneeze or just general discomfort. He pretty much whimpered and cried in his sleep the entire night. And, since the boys now share a room, Jacob didn’t sleep so well either.
So, you have the heat and the cold part of my post. What’s the ironic part, you ask? Josh and I decided to go to bed early last night. Almost as soon as our eyes closed, Neko started howling and Jack started whimpering. We should have just stayed up and kept watching Season 2 of The Unit. Between tending to Neko, Jackson and Jacob (who of course staggered their neediness so that someone needed one of us all night long), Josh and I got very little sleep.
As I was leaving the house this morning to go to my second interview, Jackson had a major meltdown because he didn’t want me to leave. He cried so hard that he threw up.
I’m hoping the next 24 hours are a bit better. They have to be, right?

Seven (!!) Years
Posted in General at 12:08 am by Jenni
So, I blinked and suddenly, seven years have passed. Wow, seven years. Since saying “I do” on January 12, 2002, we’ve…
– lived in 2 states
– suffered through my master’s program
– made 3 apartments and 3 houses our home
– acquired 2 cats, 2 dogs, 1 fish
– lost 1 cat 😦
– traveled to Mexico twice , drove across country twice, vacationed in Miami, drove to Vegas twice, flew to Vegas once, went to Disney World twice, took a cruise from California, flew back and forth between Denver and Boston multiple times, and taken a butt load of weekend trips to B&B’s
– had two perfect little boys
– changed jobs and, ultimately, careers
– fell in love with Jack Bauer, said goodbye to Sydney Bristow and been delightfully horified by Sean and Christian (I think only Josh will get this…)
– lost weight, gained weight, lost weight, gained weight, etc.
The list could go on and on but it’s nearly midnight and given that this is Jacob’s biggest sleep stretch of the day, I should probably go to bed soon. My point is that although a whole bunch of stuff has happened in 7 years, it literally seems like it was just yesterday that Michelle was setting my kitchen towel on fire on the morning of my wedding. Wasn’t it only a few hours ago that my bridal party of 27 squeezed into my parents’ house for awkward professional photos. It feels like just minutes ago that Josh and I missed out on our awesomely delicious hor d’oevres because we were having more photos taken. Ahh, the cake, the music, the surprise song written by Josh, the dancing, the vows, it all seems like yesterday. Anyone who really knows me will know that I really have a crappy memory. But, I remember so much in detail from January 12, 2002 and there’s a lot to celebrate.
So, continuing our year of traditions, Josh and I agreed that we should celebrate our anniversary as a family each year with a family breakfast. Before Josh headed to work for his swing shift today, we all went to the Hearth and Kettle for a yummy breakfast feast.

Note: Next year, we’ll all take a much better picture 🙂
I spent the day playing Chutes and Ladders, Candyland, Hi Ho Cherry-o, Connect 4, 12 different puzzles and Thomas with Jackson and Jacob while receiving an invitation for a second interview (woo hoo!!!!!!!) and chipping away at my Faculty Candidate training to be a part-time online human services/social work professor for the University of Phoenix (woo hoo again!!!).

Can’t forget about the rest of the family.
Posted in Jacob, Pets at 8:30 pm by Jenni
Since I’ve blogged about Jackson and our Date Night, I needed to also blog about Jacob and the girls.
(Should I be writing the photo captions under or above the photos? Probably under. But, lately, I’ve been writing them above. Hmm…)
Here Josh and Jackson teach Jacob the finer art of playing Transformers. Do you see how crazy ridiculous our Transformer collection has gotten? Jackson looks a bit irritated because Daddy is taking forever to transform someone. If you could see my face, you would see that I am irritated because Jackson’s favorite show at the moment is Pet Star. Man those people and their pets are annoying….
After his bathy.
A common scene at our house once the boys have gone to bed. Please excuse our crappy chair. We’re working on getting that sectional soon.
And, as a bonus, here’s a quick video of Jacob from after last night’s bathy:
Date Night #2
Posted in General at 8:16 pm by Jenni
I promise I won’t always share our Date Night events …
We’re proud of this week’s Date Night and needed to share. Josh planned it again because I was in freak out mode leading up to Tuesday’s interview (see the previous post: Preschool?!?”. So, following our trip to Bugaboo Creek, we put the boys to bed and Josh surprised me with an evening of candles, wine (which I promptly traded in for a mimosa with our left over New Year’s Eve champagne), bad dancing (from me as I have completely forgotten how to ballroom dance) and a 300 piece puzzle.
Here’s our puzzle progress:
Hmm….wonder what this will look like?
Woo hoo! We’ve done the border. Ignore the knife…
It’s getting there.
Oh, I see. It’s a puzzle for crazy old cat ladies.
All these cats are starting to creep me out.
Success!
We topped Date Night #2 off with the season premier of one of our favorite shows, Nip/Tuck.
Next week’s Date Night is on me to plan. I better get cracking…
Preschool?!?
Posted in Jackson at 8:06 pm by Jenni
I’m not quite sure how it happened, but our first baby is suddenly 3 years old and officially a preschooler. His first day of preschool was this Tuesday and since Josh is working all day today and tomorrow (yay overtime!!), he probably won’t get a chance to blog about it for a while.
Sadly, I wasn’t really part of his first day of preschool since I had a big interview that day. (cross your fingers, please, I really want this job!!!)
Jackson spent the morning watching some TV. Here he’s watching some old ladies get their hair done. No wait, he’s watching some robots reading their magazines. No, that’s wrong too. Maybe it’s some R2D2 clones getting a tune up? Truthfully, I have no idea what he’s watching. Josh?
Disclaimer: We don’t normally let him watch TV while standing this close to the set. I’m also not quite sure why he’s not wearing any pants. Things fall apart when I’m not here…
This is Jackson’s breakfast – burnt low fat cinnamon rolls by Mommy and a banana. Oops. My bad. I guess things fall apart even when I am there. I blame it on our oven taking 20 minutes to preheat and then 2 seconds to burn once it has been preheated.
Ready for school!
Waiting for the bus…
Just kidding. He doesn’t take a bus. But, he really looks like he’s waiting for one, no? See our Christmas tree in the background? It’s not even a real one. It’s a fake one that the cat broke and we still haven’t moved it off our porch and to the dumpster that is oh maybe 5 feet away. We are fully aware of our laziness…
Back to the photos….
“Way to go, Mama and Daddy. It’s January 6th and our broken Christmas tree still isn’t in the trash. You guys are superstars! Thumbs up.”
Ok, now that he has his Transformers back pack AND his Transformers hat (which he stole from Josh), he’s REALLY ready for school. Since the hat is featuring an Autobot symbol and not the Decepticon symbol that’s on the reverse, one could gather that he is in a good mood.
Getting ready to get out of the car and go inside the school. Jacob is in the blue bunting next to him.
Playing with an old school Little People airplane at school.
Seems like a perfect first day of preschool, right?
Well, after Josh left, tears flowed freely from both Jackson and Josh (and me when Josh told me Jackson cried). But the teachers report that he settled down ok and when Josh picked him up 4 hours later, he was very happy.
Jackson said his favorite part of school was when he “made a pee pee on the potty at school.” Woo hoo! Double score!!
We celebrated his success with a trip to his favorite restaurant, Bugaboo Creek. Josh and I have decided that we need to find a new favorite restaurant for Jackson since neither of us are too fond of Bugaboo Creek anymore. Plus, our waitress was very histrionic and had zero boundaries. We all know everything (and I do mean everything) there is to know about her. I called the manager to complain after we left instead of while we were there because I was afraid she’d cause a huge scene.
Aside from the waitress, Tuesday was a great day and we’re so very proud of Jackson!
