Debra, I often read your posts, absorb it’s honesty, and then return to comment. You are a powerful writer, a gentle soul, and a remarkable woman, sharing the grief of your friends and neighbors as you continue to grieve losing Jay. My mother was resilient, widowed with three daughters at the age of 49, any savings wiped out after my father’s year-long illness. Thank you for sharing your journey, along with Mary Oliver’s poems. I’m sending love and light your way.

I can’t even imagine how difficult it must be to loose your home and have to start all over. That is really when you find out if you are indeed resilient. I hope this new year brings you peace and comfort.

Thanks for a thought provoking piece Debra, it made me reflect at some length about resilience. I am not sure I came to any deep conclusion except that, speaking from my own experience, life is going to hit us unexpectedly with difficulties and we have to find coping mechanisms. Sometimes in the past I didnt manage to find those mechanisms and I was very difficuilt to be around. Hopefully I can cope better in the future.
I thought of you this morning when I heard on the radio a new piece by Eric Whitacre called “The Pacific has no memory” dedicated to victims of the California wild fires of a year ago. https://ericwhitacre.com/music-catalog/the-pacific-has-no-memory
