SO MANY PEOPLE (approximately four) have asked if I would share links for clothes I wore on my trip to New York City last week. I initially planned to do that on Instagram, but then I started thinking about how Stories disappear and links go away and etc., so I decided I would give the sharing a go right here on my Badly Broken Blog. If y’all could only see the error messages that I see when I log in :-) – but hopefully I can still get ‘er done. (And yes, I do have a Substack that I’ve never used, and I’ve thought about following Melanie’s lead and posting over there – but I’ve never tried to use the platform and I’m not in much of a mood to learn at the moment).
(Thank you for your understanding.)
All righty. Let’s get to the clothes.
Right before I left town I bought a set from Aerie, and it was the perfect thing to wear for a long day of traveling. My friend Daph and I ended up dealing with somewhere between eighteen to forty two flight delays (a slight exaggeration), so we ended up sitting in airports and on runways for much longer than we anticipated. I was so, so happy to be wearing this combo.

This popover sweatshirt from Aerie is oversized (I wear an XL) so size down if you’d like it more fitted.

If you’ve ever thought, you know, it would be nice if I could just wear pajama bottoms on my flight, then these pull-0n pants might be a fine solution (I bought an XL in case they got shrink-y in the dryer, but I’m normally a L in Aerie pants). They’re so cute – and they have detail on the sides that is hard to see in this picture, but I don’t know how anything could be softer and still so breathable. I mentioned on this week’s podcast episode that two Delta flight attendants asked if they could please touch my sweatshirt – the fabric looked that soft – and no doubt both of these pieces will go on sale before Christmas rolls around.
Another Aerie fave were some pants Melanie told me about a few weeks ago, but it looks like they’re still sold out online. I bet they’re in stores, though, so if you have an Aerie nearby, ask a salesperson if they have any waffle trousers. They’re fantastic, and I wore them with a shirt really similar to this one.

Nothing like a good denim shirt from GAP to pull an outfit together. One thing that I’m really into this winter is layering a cute button-down with a crew neck sweater, so I’m gonna share my button-down favorites and a couple of crew necks that I think are super cute.
I have this button-down in two colors; I love the sleeves, the length, and the fact that it’s a near-perfect shirt to throw on with a pair of jeans.

It’s the Maeve oversized buttondown, and I wear an XL. Sizes are super limited in the white, but I’ve worn my blue one a ton.
My other fave buttondown this fall / winter has been this little number, also from Anthropologie.

It’s the Pilcro crystal-embellished buttondown, it’s currently on sale, and IMHO it’s just the right degree of fussy. I’m wearing it tonight, in fact (we’re going to Helen to celebrate Jackson’s birthday), with these pants (the shoes in this picture are tragic, btw)…

…and my most beloved sweater of the season.

I know. It’s a sweater with a dog. It’s so soft, the color is fab, and even in everyone-prefers-solid-black-clothes New York City, I got a ton of compliments on it. If a solid sweater is more your thing, then this style is a great option. Both are on sale right now. Just FYI I got an XXL in the dog sweater – I wanted it bigger and baggier to wear with my new GAP skinny jeans, but I’m just ordered a red version in an XL so I can wear it with wider-legged jeans.
And speaking of that…these jeans have been my go-tos for the last year or so.

They’re the Scotty Cuffed High-Rise Jeans by Pilcro. I think the visual interest of that big cuff is so fun, and they work with every kind of shoe I’ve tried. I really love them with some fuzzy mules I got at Gus Mayer, but in New York I wore them with sneakers and was happy as a clam.
It was so cold that first day in NYC that I felt like I needed to wear boots, and these Dolce Vita H20 boots have come through for me over and over again. They’re so comfortable and so warm.

My other shoe MVP?

These New Balance 327s. The New Balances paired with FITS wool socks was a winning combo. The FITS socks are a dream and a really good teacher in terms of why your socks matter as much as your shoes if you’re walking 20,000-ish steps a day. I just ordered these FITS that are half-price for David and Alex; they’re a great stocking stuffer if you’re on the lookout for those right now.
Finally, my coat was a crucial part of the clothing festivities, mainly because it never got warmer than 42 degrees the whole time we were there. I took my Athleta coat (the newer version in black is half-price right now), and it remains a near-perfect travel option. My friend Marion has the same coat, and you’ve never seen two people more delighted to be Twin Coats than we were.

If you’d like to read more about our trip, you can do that in this week’s installment of my newsletter, and of course Melanie and I talk about it a ton on this week’s podcast episode.
Hope you have the best weekend!
Love,
SH
