Here’s the Perfect Bike to Work Week Bike: It’s ready for Happy Hour!
Posted: May 12, 2014 | Author: Gwendolyn Alley aka Art Predator | Filed under: Active Transportation, bikergo | Tags: Bike to Work Day, Bike to Work Week 2014, commuter bikes, Fat Kitty Cycles | Leave a comment
Just in time for Bike to Work Week this week is this fabulous Wine to Work Bike!
And it’s especially just in time for me because I just fell off my bike when the seat came off of my wonderful Bikergo and recently the bike basket came off! Okay, I know these are easy repairs and yes it’s just an excuse for another bike!
But isn’t this one perfect for a wine blogging Wine Predator like me? Or maybe you?
Maybe you’re handy with tools and can make one for yourself now that you’ve got the idea, but if you want one custom made, this one came from Fat Kitty Cycles, an employee owned and operated shop in Boulder, CO which offers a mix of new, used, reused, and consignment bicycle sales.
According to the owners, Fat Kitty Cycles is “Boulder’s newest and most funnest bike shop, featuring new and used bikes, parts, accessories, service, and classes!” They can also fix up that old bike in the garage with some love to make it last another ten years and make it Bike to Work Week or wine country ready!
Did you know that more than half of the U.S. population lives within five miles of their workplace, making bicycling a feasible, fun way to get to work? Walking and biking are healthy, sustainable and economic transportation options; see this article about active transportation cutting back on obesity and diabetes. This week is the perfect time to break out your bike, ride to work, and celebrate after with a little vino!
Look for Bike to Work Week events around your town –or make one happen! Bike to Work Day is Friday May 16 and many communities sponsor breakfasts and bike clinics for cyclists.
Well, I need to fix my bike seat so I can ride it to work–it’s finals week too and I have more conferences with students before I go pick my son up at school so we can ride home together!
Happy cycling!

Concerned About Bicycle Safety? What You Can Do TODAY
Posted: November 23, 2013 | Author: Gwendolyn Alley aka Art Predator | Filed under: Uncategorized | 1 CommentContact Congress! Go for a ride! Speak at City Hall! Write a letter to the Editor! Make our streets safe for all!

Did you know that biking and walking fatalities represent 16.3 percent of all traffic deaths? Last week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) confirmed that and that a total of 5,469 people killed.
The League of American Bicyclists reminds us that among those killed in 2013 was Joy Covey who helped catapult Amazon.com from a small company to today’s global powerhouse. Earlier this year, on a bicycle ride in San Mateo County, Calif., the 50 year old woman was struck by a delivery van and killed.
Contact members of Congress TODAY to ask them to co-sponsor H.R. 3494 / S. 1708, which requires the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) and state DOTs to account for and work to reduce bicyclist and pedestrian deaths. Take Action Here.

Bicycle Awareness: Taking It To the Streets (+ City Hall!)
Posted: November 22, 2013 | Author: Gwendolyn Alley aka Art Predator | Filed under: Uncategorized | 1 CommentImportant ride in Ventura tomorrow Nov. 23, 2013 followed by other actions including letters to the editor and an appearance at the Ventura City Council meeting Mon. 12/2/13.

Have you seen a ghost bike in your community?
Pictured here is a ghost bike: simply, it’s a bicycle that has been painted white and placed where a bicyclist has died to remind us all of where and how they lost their lives–and to remind drivers to BE CAREFUL. (Learn about the Ghost Bike Film Project here).
In the past few years, far too many people have died or been seriously injured here in Ventura County as well as elsewhere by collisions between drivers and cyclists.
My friend Rachel Morris, the Executive Director of VCCool, recently let me know about a series of events here in Ventura to bring awareness and solutions to the traffic casualties that bikers and walkers are experiencing.

Burning Man 2013: Cargo Cult’s Bike Cult
Posted: August 9, 2013 | Author: Gwendolyn Alley aka Art Predator | Filed under: Uncategorized | Leave a commenthow about these Burning Man bicycles?
Going to Burning Man this year? Have you got your bike in gear? Have you been riding it around –day and night? Got lights?
You may still have time to make yourself this Cargo Cult bike and bike trailer!
Honestly, I think you’d do better on the playa with rubber tires but hey, this bike’s got a lot of potential!
This year will be our first year in a long time that we won’t have our Burley trailer. At nine, our son doesn’t quite fit in it like he used to.
If we had more room, we’d bring it anyway.

bikergo gal rides
bikergo gal aka Gwendolyn Alley aka Art Predator participates in monthly themed ArtRides to various art galleries and studios on the First Friday in Ventura. These free short rides are for fun and family oriented. Read more about themes on the RIDES page.
We don’t have a permit for these rides because we rely on our right to peacefully assemble. When we ride we become traffic and abide by the laws of traffic.
If you choose to join us for a ride we ask that you follow three simple rules:
1. Have fun.
2. Respect our community.
3. Obey all traffic laws.
We charge everyone on the ride to help encourage others to abide by these rules. Be nice to the people stuck in their cars missing out on the fun because:
We’re out to generate goodwill for cyclists and cycling, and to have a great time! Smiles and waves are so much more joyous than getting and giving grief!
Whether you dust off your old cruiser or bring out your pricey pride and joy, we ride because we like to get people on their bikes and to have fun. It’s even more fun if you dress up with us, but that’s not a requirement.
If you’d like to join us on our next social on wheels, bring your bike to the Ventura Beach Promenade by the Artists Union Gallery 330 California Street. We meet up at 5:30pm and ride by 6pm. We ride until about 7:30 or 8pm when we often gather for food and more merriment. Rides are free.
The latest information about upcoming rides can be found in posts on this blog and on the page titled RIDES.
