I just posted this on my Facebook and need to post it here too. Right now I feel like contacting anyone and everyone who will listen.
I'm so angry I am shaking. I have just spent time being asked by every ****** estate agent in Prague what nationality I am before they will let me see a flat. They are screening for Ukrainians and other Eastern Europeans of course. I am FURIOUS, SHOCKED, DISGUSTED and several other things. So - I've emailed details to the EU Commission on Human Rights and also got a wonderfully helpful news reporter here to run a story.
I just find the prejudices here too awful to contemplate at times. God alone knows what it must be like being Roma if you can't even see the flat you want if you're Ukrainian. I told the reporter I will get back to her with our experiences when we turn up to see these places and it becomes apparent that I am Irish and - gasp - married to a Ukrainian. As she said, "They have no idea how to deal with that." Well, maybe I can help them with some ideas.
There are times when I just hate the xenophobia here - it's like the UK in the 1960s or something.
And with Obama coming at the weekend. God, the day when we have a Roma or Ukrainian origin president here will be the day pigs fly and the moon turns to green cheese. There are times I am ashamed of this country.
