This is a very thought-provoking article which needs to be widely circulated. I would appreciate having it sent to my email so that I can circulate this to as many people as possible! Jose Bulatao, Jr.

“this will only happen where communities are united, diverse, and have a physical connection to a landbase that they can call home. ”
I tend to be as pessimistic about these prospects as the next doomer, but I think this process, as quoted, creates a negative feedback against industrial civilization. We are force-fed a particular narrative and yet so many people are transitioning to a postcapitalist, postindustrial, postcarbon model. We’re imperfect, and much of the movement is quickly co-opted, but slowly people are transforming a love of healthy, local food into alternative economics (Slow Money, time banks, etc) and home economics (DIY, self-education, etc). I think the land base is key. And we can further the transformation, rather than seeking “like-minded individuals,” through many different avenues of convincing people that where they live is the basis of their identity, rather than the market labels of nationality, consumer group, and so forth. We have to make it our task to be Underminers of industrial civilization, and this is as easy as constantly challenging the people around us to think about the world differently.
I have a very similar idea I call the Revolution in Place. It is very similar to your idea and transcends the tidy categories of academic exclusion to encompass everything it means to be human.
Thanks so much. I enjoyed the read. ]]>

People’s definition of modern is skewed to have to include electronics, etc. We recently watched Star Trek Insurrection and there is a line about giving up machines, which is wrong, as they still had machines, just not certain ones. Being modern is not having the latest gadget or thingambobber.

Great article, though I’m not sure it is community that is going to help us much in the long decent. From what I’m seeing on my community is business as usual and little regard to reality. Inmho it’s going to be up to like minded individuals and families. I think cn unities will play a bigger role in a couple hundred years or so.

Great post! Tomorrow there is a meeting about adding a misnamed greenway ie asphalt road to Dakota County. I found this inspirational. Thanks. Are you ever in mpls 8 a Saturdays? I do a show Food Freedom Radio.

Keep thinkin’. Pretty soon you will realize that the only thing possible is the dismantling of the modern monster. And then, you will realize that people are human beings and we behave in a certain way. And then you can begin to accept the reality of humanities future.
