Comment on Asexuality in fiction: How to Say Goodbye in Robot (review) by Lee

Sat, 22 Nov 2025 20:22:27 +0000https://asexualagenda.wordpress.com/?p=990#comment-30362commenting on this many years later in case anyone else is reading this-
I think this review misses the mark on Jonah’s behavior. Jonah lost his mother and brother in an accident at 8 years old, and has had immense trauma over it. It’s clear at the beginning of the novel that he is still suffering the loss of his twin brother. Jonah is a teenage boy dealing with grief. Boxing his character into a box as potentially abusive misses the mark on what this book is about. Bea and Jonah connect as outcasts, because both of them are in odd home life situations. Jonah’s brother is discovered to be alive, and Jonah is denied any access to him- just for Matthew to actually die near the end of the book. Jonah’s behavior is absolutely valid for somebody dealing with the trauma that he is.

Thanks, I fixed that.
I’d suggest a two month carnival, but it’s up to you.

Tue, 11 Nov 2025 02:21:54 +0000https://asexualagenda.wordpress.com/?page_id=52#comment-30356I volunteer to host the next Carnival of Aces.
I know. It’s been a hot second. But I have a post I want to publish, and I figured I might as well open the floor to others. I could do December, for a one-month Carnival, or January-February, if we want a two-month one.
By the way, I notice the last Carnival round-up hasn’t made it onto the masterpost.

Comment on Journal Club: The investment model in asexual relationships by Siggy
https://asexualagenda.wordpress.com/2022/11/23/journal-club-the-investment-model-in-asexual-relationships/#comment-30355
Mon, 10 Nov 2025 03:15:58 +0000https://asexualagenda.wordpress.com/?p=12521#comment-30355In reply to Alexandra.
Hi Alexandra, just to clarify one of the points:
“The methodology section is not consistent about whether the participants self-identified as “asexual” or “asexual spectrum”. Even if the authors use “asexual” to refer to the asexual spectrum, participants won’t necessarily do the same. There was no question that asked where people were on the asexual spectrum“
There are multiple ways to determine if participants are asexual spectrum. For example, a multiple choice question with “asexual”, “demisexual” and “gray-asexual” as options, or a writein question where any ace-related label is interpreted as asexual spectrum. These days the Ace Community Survey directly asks if people are on the asexual spectrum, because we don’t want to make assumptions about what people think does or doesn’t count.
IIRC the paper didn’t describe any such questions, and so the journal club didn’t know how it was operationalized. We were concerned that the questionnaire simply asked “Are you asexual?” and assumed demi/gray folks would say “yes” to that. But we weren’t really sure, and it sounds like there were other questions in the study we were unaware of!
