Thanks for your kind note, Ash! Glad to be of assistance! By the way, that photo of B. viridisuturalis appears on p. 224 of my next book, Beetles of Western North America, that will be available in just a few weeks.

Thanks again for your dedication!

good advice to Amy, Art. But it still shouldn’t be there. Maybe it contracted Covid and can’t move?

Amy,
Thanks for your note! What you describe sounds like defensive behavior to me. I suggest leaving it be and let nature take its course.
Where did you find it? State? County? Location?
Stay well, ART EVANS

Sun, 13 Dec 2020 01:09:05 +0000https://arthurevans.wordpress.com/?p=359#comment-11903A very large Jerusalem cricket came into our house last night, I freaked, not knowing what it was and got it outside. I don’t know if I injured it or it was already injured because it did seem to be having difficulty moving in the first place. I thought it was dead after I put it outside on the deck because it was on its back. Today, it is still alive, right side up, dragging its back legs behind it. It repeatedly tries to flip these legs back over with its upper arms — it’s like they are flipped on backwards. Should I try to help it and flip its legs back over? Or will I make things worse? Can it do it itself? It’s very large — 2-3 inches. Thanks for any advice! -Amy

Sorry to read of your bad experience with these animals. I’m not sure what you saw them discharging, although fecal pellets are certainly a possibility.

Sun, 19 Aug 2018 01:14:25 +0000https://arthurevans.wordpress.com/?p=268#comment-9985I am confused about a “bug” I had living in an old house that was sectioned into apartments, I was on the ground floor with a back door and little balcony with 4 stairs, I was ill, so I did not use the kitchen much, and one night opened a can of old salmon in oil, that made me feel ill at the smell, so I left it sitting out all night, the next night I went in the kitchn, small and damn, and there were these little oblong caramel kinda coloured small things all over the can, I had no idea what it was, but it looked like large bug poop or eggs. I put it in a bag to dispose, but again I kept then finding those around the kitchen, then started seeing these long multi legged bugs running faster than I had ever seen anything run on earth, around my apartment, they would mostly hide by the toilet, and looked like they kinda had a bit of colour on their long backs, blueish or greenish, but not bright. they would run and poop out these little egg things i said before if I came up on one, I was so distressed, as i had a bleeding ulcer and was nauseous, I finally left the apartment. I never got over seeing these alien fast creatures about an inch long in my life, and I grew up in the country, saw a lot of centipedes, but non with legs this long and fast..anyone else ever heard of this discharge of droppings one leaves? I really need to know what they were, I am still freaked out..and i held and loved all bugs as a child, its the speed, its scary..
