- Emergency: There is an immediate threat on campus or directly involving the university. Examples include an active shooter, a hazardous materials leak on campus, or a tornado warning.
- Special: A non-emergency condition in which the university is not operating normally. Examples include closures or delayed openings due to winter weather.
What is AppState-ALERT?

What is an emergency notification?
In the event of a significant, active emergency or dangerous situation that poses an immediate threat to the health or safety of the campus community, the university will issue emergency notifications without delay, via AppState-ALERT. Examples include:
- Natural disasters
- Acts of terrorism
- Active assailants or shooters
- Hazardous material spills
- Fires
- Severe weather
- Significant utility outages
What is a timely warning?
Appalachian State University issues timely warnings (safety alerts) in accordance with the Clery Safety Act to notify the campus community of Clery Act-defined crimes that have already occurred on or near campus, but may still pose a serious or ongoing threat to safety.
Timely warnings are intended to enable individuals to take precautions to protect themselves from similar crimes. These timely warnings are disseminated through emails, texts, and/or other means and include information that promotes safety through increased awareness without compromising law enforcement efforts.

Key terms to know for emergency conditions
Shelter in place
- Seek safe refuge, typically indoors
- Safe shelter and actions to take will vary depending on the type of emergency
- Become familiar with safe refuge locations before an emergency by reviewing actions to take during situations that may require you to shelter in place such as an active shooter or hazardous weather
Evacuation
This is the movement of persons from a dangerous or potentially dangerous place to a safe place. In an extreme situation, (eg. flood) large portions of and perhaps the entire campus may be required to evacuate.
- When a fire alarm is activated, evacuation is mandatory
- Do not use elevators
- Take stairs
- Bring personal belongings
- Assist individuals with disabilities if possible
All clear
- This means the immediate danger is over and that most functions and campus operations may resume as normal. The immediate danger has passed. Occupants may reenter buildings and move freely on campus unless otherwise directed.
- Specific guidance regarding university events will be posted to this website and/or sponsoring department website.
