Fantastic little speakers
Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2019The W7's are generally wonderful little speakers with one or two caveats. Right now I have a pair in use as surrounds with a W studio sound bar and two others as solo speakers in the kitchen and a bedroom.
The Good:
Sound quality is phenomenal for such a small package, detail rendition is great vocals are natural, percussion is crisp & punchy and they are capable of legitimately good mid-bass. Having drivers firing in three directions really helps it fill a room and one W7 can do my 14'x24' living room without any trouble.
The build quality is excellent, looks & feels really well made and I appreciate the clean, minimal design that blends into the room nicely.
The play-fi app allows for use in single speaker, stereo, surround sound or multi-room configurations. Also worth noting that play-fi does 24 bit audio which is way better quality than Bluetooth or airplay can provide.
The bad:
The app is a little clunky, but once you have the configuration in order running Spotify connect is effortless for music. Also the bottom end deep bass isn't really there, but considering the largest driver is 4" it's really impressive.
The only other complaint I have is the choice of glossy piano black for the top plate, which shows fingerprints and dust more readily than just about any material known to man, aluminum or a matte black would be a much better material for top.
Highly recommend the W7's, short of the (much more expensive) Naim Mu-So these are the best sounding wireless speakers I have come across.

Incredible sound quality, clunky app
Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2015I currently own two W7 speakers (setup for stereo sound) and one W9 and have been extremely happy with the sound quality. I initially bought the W9, Sonos Play:5 and Play:3, and Bluesound Pulse to compare and see which I liked better. To my family's ears, the Def Tech speakers were the clear winners on sound quality.
The downside is the Play-Fi app, which is clunky and not entirely reliable on Android (works better on iOS). Sonos is in a league of its own when it comes to ease of use of the system and reliability of the app, so if you're looking for decent to good sound quality with an extremely easy to setup and use system, Sonos is far superior to Def Tech. But if your focus is on the highest quality sound, there's no comparison between the W7/W9 and the Play:3/Play:5, the Sonos speakers don't come close to the Def Tech sound quality. For anyone curious about the Bluesound Pulse, despite it's price tag equaling that of the Def Tech W9, I found the sound quality of the speaker to be worse than that of the Sonos Play:5, so I returned it almost immediately.
If you're a Spotify PREMIUM user, thankfully the speakers now work with Spotify Connect, so you can avoid the Play-Fi mobile app altogether. Of note though, at this point Spotify is only able to play one speaker at a time, so there's no multi-room listening or stereo speaker listening available through Spotify, you can only direct the output to a single speaker at one time. DTS has indicated that multi-room (and presumably stereo speaker setup) listening for Spotify is "coming soon", so hopefully that is remedied in the near future.
You can also avoid the mobile app altogether by installing the Windows app, which allows you to capture any audio from your computer and send it to the speakers. I tend to use this sparingly as I'd rather use my iPad or phone to control the music wherever I am instead of running back to the computer, but it does work as described. So for those who'd rather play from an iTunes or Google Music library, you could use the Windows app to play from your computer. No Mac app currently exists.
if you're a true audiophile and want the best sound out of these speakers, use high-resolution audio files. I'm in the midst of converting my large CD collection into FLAC files on a home music server and the sound quality out of the speakers is significantly better from those files than it is from a Pandora or SiriusXM stream. Spotify set at the highest quality sounds much better than Pandora and SiriusXM and is likely just fine for most everyone, but if you're looking for the highest quality sound you can get, the FLAC files are superior (noticeably to my ears).
Lastly, if you're trying to decide between the W7 and the W9, you can't go wrong either way. I have a W9 on my main floor which has a mostly open floor plan and at less than half volume, the speaker can fill up the entire floor of a mid-to-large-sized house with sound. The placement of the speakers in the W9 allows for decent stereo output, though certainly not as good as having two speakers in separate locations lined up for L and R output. But for general, high-quality music-listening and entertaining, it's great on its own. The W7's I prefer as a stereo setup, but due to the spotify limitation mentioned above, I have often used only one at a time and it's still a good enough sound for most rooms. I'd pick the W9 over the W7 for that purpose with all things being equal, but given the price difference, if you're looking to spend less you'll be more than fine with the W7.

More trouble than it's worth!!
Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2019I brought 2 previously; one was defective but was replaced promptly. I use them primarily for surround sound & they work well with my Micro sound bar. However. it is a chore switching between surround sound & Play Fi. Thus, I purchased 2 more W7s at a reduced price. These will be used primarily for music. I received 2nd set & had them set up with Play-fi within 10 minutes. Incredible sound & great price -more than satisfied After months of having to reset surround daily I am frustrated with the constant problems. When it works it has amazing sound. But it isn't worth the effort. I can't in good conscious recomend this product. 1 star, tne app is terrible. I finally gave up. The sound is good but the app would not stay hooked up overnight. I could never reach Def Tech. This has been an expensive lesson! Did more reseach, found Nakakachimi. Set up easy. It has breathtaking surround, and it works! Stay away from Def Tech!

Great sound but troublesome to keep connected.
Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2019Sound is great but connectivity is terrible. I have had these for about 6 months and I am on my second factory replaced pair. I purchased these speakers to provide rear surround effect. This works fine if you can get them connected but that is easier said than done. As others have said, app sucks. It is time comsuming and frustrating to constantly be reconnecting them to WiFi. Not sure why disconnect happens but it is often. When this happens your surround group won’t work and you must go through process of reconnecting speakers and then setting up a surround group. Once you have a surround group you can no longer use speakers independently without deleting surround group. Deleting is not difficult but as per above setting up group (if you can) is a very slow and frustrating process and I would never intentionally do so. Summary is that while sound is great, at least for me, this is a high maintenance product and I would go with a Bluetooth system.

We absolutely love this speaker
Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2016We absolutely love this speaker! Prior to purchasing, I read all the bad reviews on several website about his product and all of them had a similar theme (set up and application). Due to this, I was expecting some of the set up to be difficulty BUT this was not my experience. If you follow the directions, set up should be quick and very easy. I find this speaker easier and quicker to use than ALL Bluetooth devices I have used in the past (sony, bose, ihome). I hooked up my girlfriends new IPHONE 7 via installing the def tech application and she loves it and finds it extremely easy to use compared to Bluetooth devices mentioned above.
The sound quality is exceptional. There are many complaints about this device not being Bluetooth compatible, however, what I gather most people do not understand is that by streaming music via Wi-Fi instead of Bluetooth, you are getting a higher quality sound.....which would be impossible to match via Bluetooth.
ALSO, you can download other applications that control play-fi devices that will enable you to stream most anything to the speaker. I am fairly tech savvy and have not found any limitation yet far with this product. You may not be able to do everything through the def tech application but there are certainly ways around it.
We plan to purchase another in the next few months.
Def Tech did this right in my opinion. Many of the past reviews state the application is limiting...ok, so it is somewhat limiting...HOWEVER..there are ways around it.

Amazing!!
Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2018I don’t normally write reviews, but I felt compelled due to the negative reviews of this speaker out there.
Pros: absolutely incredible sound! By far right the best “small” speaker I’ve ever heard. I was expecting to use two in one of our larger rooms and one fills the room up with amazing sound with plenty of high and low end. Using Spotify connect it a breeze. It works immediately once you connect the speaker to you WiFi.
Cons: it only works on WiFi, so no Bluetooth which for some people matters. Yes, the number of streaming services is limited.
Overall, this speaker blows Sonos away. If you’re using Spotify, it works seamlessly though Spotify connect.

READ THIS REVIEW to save $$$ and hours of wasted time
Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2020Everyone knows that Def Tech has great sound--better sound quality than many other speakers at price points double and triple. I own seven of their top end wired speakers in my home theater. What you will want to know in considering this speaker is that Def Tech has no business making speakers that do anything but produce sound using signals carried over wire.
I read many of the reviews on this site and other sites and most of them basically state that the sound quality is great and the app is terrible. What you will want to understand is that you won't get anywhere with these speakers without the app, so the whole speaker system is jacked up from the start. It's not only the app--the entire WiFi setup and connectivity (radio receiver) of these speakers is garbage, like Def Tech contracted some low bidder working out of his mom's basement.
I am a video/audiophile and have set up numerous home theaters, integrated smart home systems, and other home entertainment and security systems that use WiFi connectivity. My current home has over 25 WiFi devices that set up easily and work flawlessly on my gigabit WiFi network. So, what was my surprise when I decided to buy two W7s to expand upon my Def Tech W Studio Micro to go from 3.1 to 5.1 surround sound in our living room. Connecting the 3 speakers to Wifi and to each other--following the directions to the T--was a troubleshooting nightmare of several hours. Now, weeks following their setup, the connection fails regularly. I'm returning mine. If you must go wireless, go Sonos or Bose, otherwise go wired.
Pros: Small and attractive. Outstanding sound while streaming music, NOT surround sound.
Cons: Awful setup that does not work as described in setup directions. TIP: Setup function on Android app only worked for me if I restarted smartphone after every attempt and connected the W Studio Micro first then added the W7s.
WiFi connection fails regularly after initial setup and reconnection is a time-consuming chore of 10-15 minutes if you know how to avoid the setup pitfalls and you're lucky. Used as surround speakers with the W Studio Micro, the sound projected is minimal unless the relative volume is manually increased and then the sound is brassy and unnatural sounding.

Amazing Speakers! App is Crap!
Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2017After buying the W Studio Micro and being happy with the purchase figured I'll buy the W7 to complete the 5.1 surround sound.
The W7 speakers sound amazing and music streaming on the wireless is wonderful. If you set up surround sound on rear speakers they must be connected to 5 GHz, otherwise the setup will fail. If you have the Netgear Orbi router the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz is combined and not separatable. You will need to go in into your advance options and disable the 2.4 GHz to ensure your speaker connect to the 5GHz when setting up.
There are three apps to use. The "Definitive Technology" and "Play-Fi" apps serve the same purpose; connect speakers to the wifi and stream music. There is functionality to control the volume, but not to change the source. It looks like their focus is the Play-Fi app since that is the app for other speaker brands to use too; I see more updates for Play-Fi. The "Definitive Utility" app is suppose to be the remote app where you can control the volume or switch inputs, but the buttons do not show up.
PROS:
Speakers sound amazing!
CONS:
Functionalities are not in one "all-in-one" app. Apps are not designed well and unintuitive. The "Definitive Utility" app is useless. For real their apps are rated 1-2 stars on the Apple App Store.
Some tips for future owners...
1. Holding down the wifi button behind the speakers for 15 seconds will reset your speaker. For some reason this was not in the manual nor was it on their site. Googling did not reveal this important info either. I had to call in to find this out.
Overall I can see why some people have issues with the DT Wireless Collection. You need to be somewhat tech savvy, have patience for the setup, and there needs to be some understanding with their apps (hopefully they will do a complete overhaul). I am very, very happy with my purchase and believe you will be too only if you can get thorough these hurdles.

prjmgr4 out of 5 starsDefinitive Technology W7 - Everything you need to know . . . I think
Reviewed in Australia on June 11, 2019If you're looking for a small wireless wi-fi speaker, place this on your list as a contender. The crazy part is that pricing for this little sound box is all over the place. Should you pay $300+ bucks or $100 bucks? I don't really know why the huge variation in price - all I know is that the unit delivers in buckets! So grab it while you can for the budget price and think to yourself you've grabbed a bargain. For its size, it punches well above its weight (and it weighs a bit). So, for comparison I've listened to Bose Soundtouch 10, Yamaha WX10 (I actually own one) and the Naim Mu-so QB and yes the Naim speaks volumes over the W7 . . . it is loud, but I couldn't rate over the W7 to any significant degree for quality. So, bottom line, the W7 has a full, well rounded (non-boxy) envelope that will make you think that the engineers at Definitive Technology know their stuff. My only criticism is the app - they don't allow EQ adjustment for this model (when really it's more important on this model than the others). You can get around this depending on what app your are using to play the music from. I've found DTS Play-Fi to be stable and functional. I think the rest is up to you. I love this little music box - friends think consistently that I have augmented the soundscape from another source. No way, what you hear is what you get !!
