Watching my cat sleep is like looking at a baby’s ultrasound –
it’s hard to figure out what’s the head and what’s a leg! lol

The way he sleeps
It’s in their blood
My children’s intense love of donning a costume and putting on a show with the hopes of amusing a captive audience is growing stronger every year. It’s in their blood. My nieces and nephews are the same. We can’t get through a family party without them putting on a show. The fun thing is that they’re actually hilarious. We don’t laugh or clap just to amuse them. These children evoke genuine rolling belly laughter in their adult family audience. Here’s a little gallery of insanity:
And hey – for my colleagues out there: Pretty good Kick Off specimen huh? 😉 😀

They made my day!
I’m breathing a long sigh of relief, letting my shoulders find their rightful place in a slightly lower position, and putting my feet up. Sweet exhaustion. Is there such a thing? Apparently there is 🙂
Thursday this week was ‘Eldredagen’ (Elderly Day directly translated) at work. It’s a ‘giving back to the community’ event at my job. I was project manager of the event for the 2nd time. In total there were 400 people attending the event, approximately 300 of these were elderly persons. About 200 were invited from nursing homes, the rest were elderly guests of employees – grandmothers, grandfathers, neighbors, aunts, and uncles etc.
The day includes 3 daytime outings (you choose one), and a festive party for the elderly in the evening. Employees either bring guests, take care of practical things, or spend the day as a volunteer to aid the elderly.
Working 12-14hr days in the final week before Eldredagen is exhausting. The logistics involved with inviting a crowd that includes 28 wheel chairs and almost 50 walkers is… well… interesting. The amount of lists that have to be checked and cross-checked are dizzying.
There are a lot of special circumstances to consider when putting on an event for that many elderly people. Some of these include avoiding candles in case of oxygen tanks, and making sure the food is enjoyable for those with teeth and those without. Another interesting thing is that we live in a town where there is a limited amount of vehicles that can transport wheelchairs. Those available in town were all mobilized by us, and they were shuttling to and from nursing homes for an hour straight to get them all to the event. And then back again of course.
When I got home on Thursday night my body ached from top to toe. I sunk into the couch and thought I’d never get back up again. However – my face told a very different story. I just couldn’t stop smiling. Poor James sat patiently for an hour as I talked and talked and talked and talked about the day! I told him about:
- Seeing the slightly worried faces of the elderly arriving in the morning I just knew they were thinking: “What will this day entail? Am I up for it?” They return from the trip and all I see in their faces are sunny smiles. Every lady or gentlemen I speak to are exuberant about over the fantastic day they’ve had! What a change of expressions! We did it! We put smiles on their faces! I had to walk away so they wouldn’t see me cry.
- The little lady who was leaning on the arm of a man in an orange t-shirt was walking ever so slowly into the foyer of the party venue. She looked around from orange* to orange, blue* to blue, and exclaimed: “Look at them! They’re all smiling! Oh how wonderful you are!”
- The lady who suddenly looked lost in the back of the room and when I inquired said: “I don’t know where I was sitting. This room is so big, I feel so foolish”. I said: “No need to feel foolish, do you know there are over 400 people in here! That’s a lot of people, so it’s easy to get lost. Where are you from?” She told me what nursing home she was from and I guided her back to her seat. Luck would have it that when we got to the area her nursing home was seated at I was walking directly towards her chair. She was AMAZED that I KNEW exactly where SHE was sitting! Of course I didn’t, but she was so incredibly happy that I didn’t bother to explain. What matters is that she was happy, and when I walked away I was smiling from ear to ear.
- Another little lady who had found her way to the dessert buffet was just standing there with shaking hands. She wanted some, but her hands couldn’t carry the plate. I snuck up beside her and took a plate. With her arm in mine we got caramel pudding, chocolate cake, and fruit salad. I walked her back to her seat. She didn’t seem to be able to speak because throughout our encounter she only pointed at things and smiled. The look in her eyes after I had helped her in her seat and put the dessert in front of her said more than a thousand words. Once again I had to walk away so they wouldn’t see me cry.
I have dozens more of these stories, but you get my drift. I have worked like a madwoman, and it has been an honor and a pleasure to be allowed to do it. We went out there to “make their day”, and we did. We set out to put some joy into the lives of others, and WE DID IT! The key word here of course is we. I didn’t do this on my own. Lots of others worked just as hard as I did, and a massive team effort of dedicated, heartfelt, and capable people made this happen.
I feel rich. I feel blessed. I feel honored. I am so thankful to all those beautiful elderly people who made MY DAY!
*the volunteers wore orange t-shirts so the elderly could easily spot the ones that were there to assist them. Those in the administration team or who had practical tasks like being doormen f.ex. had blue t-shirts

Alanya 2009!

Loved:
- Watching the kids have the time of their lives!
- Coming up from the pool every day to find the dishes done (we found that we preferred eating breakfast in our room), the towels clean, and the bed blankets shaped in floral patterns.
- The incredible service at the hotel! They hadn’t seen an American at the hotel since 2002 so James quickly achieved celebrity status. They treated us like royalty the entire time. “We don’t normally make reservations when there’s a show, but we’ll hold the best table for you” 😉 James tipped handsomely (proven when ‘our’ waiter ran to say goodbye to us when we left, hugged James 3 times, and thanked him for the tips! Kemal deserved it 🙂 )
- The hilarious pool boys, “Mr Bean” and “Sonny”, who served us drinks, ice cream and lunch pool side! They chatted with the guests, made for lots of laughs, and kept a fun energy going. One morning, about 9am, ‘Mr Bean’ comes on his first round by the pool and hollers: GOOOOOOD MORNING VIETNAM!!!!!! Cola, Fanta, Sprite, Beer….Cocaine, Marihuana, Viagra….” I was in stitches! Gotta love starting your day with a severe belly laugh! 😀
- How family friendly the hotel was! Kids were welcome everywhere, and always greeted with a smile! The waiters asked what the girls’ names were the first night, and at breakfast the next morning they were greeted with “Good morning Kari & Julia!” They played with the girls, tickled them, patted their heads, and winked at them when they passed by. It was adorable!
- The Turkish Bath! Laying on a huge marble slab in the middle of a steaming hot room for about 20min and then having a Turkish guy in a towel-like thing wrapped around his waist come in the room singing some sort of traditional melody. He pulled me up and doused me with HOT water before scrubbing me down from head to toe. Then I laid down again and he used these soap “balls” inside some sort of mesh to cover me with soapy foam and then gave me a top to toe massage before finally rinsing it all off. He wrapped me in a towel and brought me to another room where I enjoyed some ice tea and relaxed. Then it was time for an hour worth of a full body massage and a clay face mask. It was seriously deep tissue massaging – his arms must ache at the end of the day!
- How deliriously happy James was after getting a Turkish Shave at the hotel barber shop! He loved it so much he ended up doing it again, and getting a haircut at the same time! He’s never been so ‘clean cut’ in his life, lol.
- The long and beautiful white hand-sown Turkish dress James bought me (and haggled down from 249 TL (Turkish Lire) to 95!! Nicely done!)
- The even more beautiful yellow and white gold diamond ring he bought me for my birthday
- The stunning park by the beach; palm trees and exotic flowers were pure eye-candy!
- The full day Blue Boat trip on a “Pirate Ship” – swimming in the mediterranean and being completely amazed that it was even warmer than the heated pool at the hotel! Magic!
- The AWESOME exercise equipment that lined the boardwalk! There was a playground for the kids and next to it there was a “work-out ground” for adults. It was all bolted down metal equipment, but it was so cool! A free outdoor exercise area that you can use year round? Every community should have one!
- Going out to eat every night! Eating awesome meals, being treated like royalty, and paying a fraction of what we would have paid at home!
- Being outside at night, it’s dark and warm at the same time! In Norway it’s pretty much never ever hot and dark outside at the same time. Boy had I missed eating ice cream under the stars on a hot summer night!
- I could go on and on and on…. you get my drift! WE LOVED IT!

Not so much:
- The haggling got rather uncomfortable at times so I left it all to James. When you have the two guys in the store yelling at each other in Turkish…well then I leave and let James “be the man”, lol. Must admit that I prefer having something cost what it says it costs.
- Kari getting terribly sea-sick on the boat trip
- Getting “feriemage” (vacation stomach) the first day…
- The pushy salesmen constantly trying to drag you into their store or restaurant
- Flying home in the middle of the night… left the hotel at midnight and arrived home at 9am. Will NEVER do that again!

Fascinating:
- The “pirate” who climbed a steel wire with his bare hands from the front of the ship to the top of the mast! He flew up like it was easy as pie!
- The kid who suddenly got thrown overboard and almost gave me a heart-attack before I realized it was all part of the show. He swam to the mountain edge, climbed up to a cave – “The Lover’s Cave” – and then the ship left him there! He appeared on the other side of the mountain a little later in the tour, and dove into the water and got fished up on board again.
- The belly dancer!
- The “snake lady” who handled a gigantic python like it was a ragdoll!
- Kari bouncing back from her sea-sickness on the boat and proceeded to get off the pirate ship and swim on two swim-stops on the 2nd half of the trip. She LOVED it! So the boat trip wasn’t a complete bust for the poor kid 🙂
- Sitting on the balcony in the hot dark of night and hearing the calling to prayer from the mosque right by the hotel. Tried to wrap my mind around how many people were falling to their knees at just that moment. What a contrast to the disco sounds from the hotel bar downstairs.

Sad:
- Having to go home

“ENGRISH”! Get ready to LOL!
You learn something new every day:

Maybe time for a new one?

Apparently there are Swedes who are a bit Engrish challenged as well:

I don’t know… is it?

LOL!!!

Oh oh…

Talented toilet:

I’ll try my best…

Hospitality is dead:

Yes ma’am:

Uhm… right… Huh?

Ooooh I need one of those!! (not!) lol

There’s a way to keep people out:

Ragamuffins, drunks, and psychotics…

Hope you laughed as hard as I did 😀

Off to see the wizard!
Ok, so maybe not the wizard – but it’s gonna be pretty awesome anyway! We’re full speed packing and getting the house ready so we can leave for vacation! Turkey here we come!
I did something astonishing! I went to the IT Svc desk before I left work today and asked them to turn off the auto synchronization for my work email on my phone (yes, I could have figured it out myself, but it’s so much easier to just say “here, fix it!” 😉 ) That inbox has updated every 15minutes every day for the past year and a half. Evenings, weekends, and vacations it has ticked along. Normally I don’t mind it, it’s extremely practical. However, right now I need a break from it – a real break. Seeing the number of emails ticking upwards…32…34…39… is just going to stress me out. It’s a constant reminder of stuff that needs to be done.
I will have my cell phone for regular calls & texts, but other than that I will be entirely technologically unavailable. Can I handle it? I’m a total computer/internet nut. You might have noticed 😉 I will attempt to steer clear of the internet café at the hotel. James and I are both leaving our laptops behind. We are going to be less available! It’s almost like having to leave my security blanket behind. It’s such a huge part of my life. It’ll be GOOD for me to be without ( – at least that is what I’m telling myself).
So bye bye friends! I will surely miss you! When I post again – about a week from now – I will have sooo much fun stuff to tell and awesome pics to show! So stay tuned!
Have a fantastic week everyone!
Two summer songs for you to enjoy! One in Norwegian and one in English 🙂

When they come cruisin’ in
Some of the biggest cruise ships in the world visit Stavanger on a regular basis. My office window faces the harbor (look at pic #2 below, my office is next to the yellow building in the picture) and I’m still amazed that ships that size can dock so close to the city. Queen Victoria and Queen Mary 2 have both been by this week. This a shot from when Queen Elisabeth 2 stopped by (not sure when this pic was taken):

And this is a shot of another one of her visits:

Costa Mediterranea likes to stop by throughout the summer months:

The city crawls with cruise-tourists, and they are all equally amazed that when the ship has docked they can walk off the landing and be standing in the center of town. There are no shuttle buses or boats required because our little harbor is incredibly deep. It’s quite a sight to see them, sometimes 3 at a time, towering over the town.

“Hotoooowhah!”
James and I have been cracking up intermittently these past few days… what is setting us off? An incident in a Chinese food restaurant on Wednesday afternoon:
The waitress brings the food to our table and gives Julia her plate. Julia promptly gathers her hands, bows, and makes a noise that went something like this: “hotoooowhah!”

Thankfully the waitress just giggled, nodded, and walked away.
James and I had the hardest time keeping a straight face. Walking to the car about an hour later we looked at each other and burst out into laughter – tears and everything! It was HILARIOUS!
……editor’s note: Julia LOVES martial arts 😉
Golden Nuggets
A selection from my book “Golden Nuggets” where I write down funny things the kids say.

Very early on a Wednesday morning. Kari has an ear infection so we’re staying home. Mommy & Kari have just woken up.

Monika (mommy’s friend) is babysitting and is letting them stay up later than their bedtime. Monika tells them it’s time for bed. Julia checks the time and says “it’s only 22!” (=10pm). Monika says that 22 is very late (bedtime is more like 20 = 8pm) and that it’s definitely bedtime. Julia exclaims confidently: “Mommy let’s us stay up until 25!” (do the math, lol)
– Julia 6yrs
