Wed, 27 Jan 2016 08:21:31 +0000https://allecto.wordpress.com/?p=74#comment-12726In reply to allecto.
I just discovered your analyses of Firefly here (8 YEARS LATER!) but I actually HAVE started a project of my own that is/will be a collection of analyses of popular stories in fictional media. The Stories we Tell. TSWT.org please check it out. I’d LOVE for you to contribute. I only have 2 analyses up at the moment, working on my 3rd. Please email me if you are interested, and/or just want to keep contact/share resources and ideas tswt.contribute@gmail.com . Thanks for writing these pieces, I just could NOT get into this series for the very reasons you mentioned in the pilot episode, even though many of my friend love the series.

Comment on Men are REALLY REALLY FUCKING DANGEROUS by Kate Corbett Pollack

Wed, 11 Feb 2015 16:49:16 +0000https://allecto.wordpress.com/?p=113#comment-12453Tried to comment earlier, forgive anything double. People who work in psychiatry, law enforcement, criminology, forensics, social work—the fact that men are dangerous is a fucking fact. No one is trying to pretend it isn’t. They are dangerous and violent at much higher levels than women. “In Their Own Words: Criminals on Crime” by Oxford University press, has a great article on domestic violence and why men commit it. It’s about patriarchal control. As women generally already know but the book provides evidence for it. I think one of the most dangerous environments a woman can put herself in is being married to a man, pregnant, and with small children at home. This is certainly arguable with statistics and evidence.

Comment on A Rapist’s View of the World: Our Mrs. Reynolds: Part One by Arwen de Lyon

Sat, 26 Apr 2014 00:08:07 +0000https://allecto.wordpress.com/?p=63#comment-11161I have to say, I’ve read most of your blogs on Firefly and I find it refreshing to find someone who feels the way I do about the show. A lot of my friends just LOOOOVE Firefly and it irks me. The show isn’t even that well written, like you I find it boring, and I don’t get how female friends of mine think the women on the show are strong. Just because the show actually has women on it and they don’t all look *exactly* the same-doesn’t make it feminism. Joss tends to go for actresses who are tiny, polite, and soft-spoken. It creeps me out more women don’t see Joss’ claims at being feminist for the transparent bs they are.
I’m only surprised I haven’t seen you mention the scene with River’s first appearance, unconscious, naked, and curled up in the fetal position. Well, granted it would be hard to mention*every* instance of anti-feminism in the show. It’s one of the most obvious scenes though, and the fact that they incorporate this scene into the opening theme makes it ten times worse.
As for Inara, I don’t even know where to begin. Even if I could get beyond the whole prostitution thing, what *really* angers me about her character is that it is so painfully obvious to me she is Joss’ vision of what is sexy in a woman-i.e. soft-spoken, never raising her voice, never losing her temper even when she really should, thin and small, always wearing revealing clothing and looking like she just stepped out of a salon. This to me is troublesome in and of itself-any man who finds any of these things attractive rather than pitiable couldn’t possibly be a feminist at all, not in any sense of the word.

Comment on Objects in Space: Black masculinity through the paradigm of whitemale lust by Kat
https://allecto.wordpress.com/2008/10/15/objects-in-space-black-masculinity-through-the-paradigm-of-whitemale-lust/#comment-10607
Mon, 10 Mar 2014 04:04:30 +0000https://allecto.wordpress.com/?p=237#comment-10607I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading your thoughts on the Firefly series, especially since they so greatly contrast from other views I’ve read. I do hope there is more to come? Although I do feel a need to caution you that some of your comments come across as an ad hominem fallacy (attacking a person’s character rather than the issue at hand) and potentially even slander, which could get your blog removed or even provide potential for lawsuit should Whedon or any of his people find the blog and choose to do so (which it’s ever increasing popularity leaves open the potential for). If as a freshman pre-law student I can find those examples, I’d hate to see what an experienced lawyer could do.
So basically, please do continue to express your opinions and make clear the points that must be made, but do so carefully.

Comment on Where are all the younger lesbian feminists/separatists? by I prefer not to say

Fri, 07 Feb 2014 10:53:42 +0000https://allecto.wordpress.com/?p=327#comment-10256is dificult to find young lesbian feminists because young women still have hope in men. normally they have no kids, are not married, etc. with time they start to see men for what they really are. Gloria Steinem has a article about that. she said something like “Women may be the one group that grows more radical with age.” i don´t know the name of the article, but it´s in the book Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions (1983). sorry for the bad english.

Thu, 07 Nov 2013 10:51:24 +0000https://allecto.wordpress.com/?p=448#comment-10150Erin, “What is choice when your oppressors have defined the limits of your selection?” – perfectly put 🙂 Yes, Allecto. I am also more interested in liberation. Until patriarchy is abolished, we will not know women’s/females’ full potentials. Even the language sabotages the message. “Woman” is a patriarchal construct; I am not comfortable even saying “women” in this context. How would the world look, if females were given a chance to blossom?

Sat, 14 Sep 2013 04:22:30 +0000https://allecto.wordpress.com/?p=277#comment-10135I am a rad fem woman who has bouts of depression here and there. I take meds that do help me and make me feel better. I am also a poet who writes about things that usually put people off because my take no prisoners language is usually considered “offensive.” I am not a phony person and refuse to censor my hard work because it could “offend people.” I write raw and truthful about some experiences in my life-some pleasant-some harrowing. I make some things up too so people can’t always tell which is which.. As long as I speak my truth-I am happy. If others want to shut me up too bad! I write about sex-rape-drugs-recovery-abusive relationships-women’s issues and more. At the end of the day I put my head on my pillow and am PROUD. Before if someone upset me I would internalize it and hurt myself. Those days are looong gone!! Here’s to freedom!!

Tue, 02 Oct 2012 23:55:56 +0000https://allecto.wordpress.com/?p=74#comment-9315Allecto, your comments on firefly were incredibly enlightening. My brother loves this show and your analysis will really assist in my arguments for why this show encourages rape. I would be extremely interested in seeing your analysis of anime, particularly “Rosario Vampire,” “Sekirei,” “Demon King Daimao,” and “Asu No Yoichi.”
