The recent announcement of US President Donald Trump’s “Board of Peace” (BoP) has stirred intense debate over what Phase 2 of the Gaza Ceasefire will look like. In reality, figuring this out is rather simple: it is a mission destined to crash and burn, similar to how the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) and the Floating Aid Pier did.
Proponents of the Trump administration’s BoP have little to show other than fancy rhetoric, churned out unironically, due to their lack of any basic understanding of Gaza’s predicament. … continue

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday threatened to impose 200 percent tariffs on French wines and champagne after French President Emmanuel Macron was reported to be unwilling to join his “Board of Peace” on Gaza, according to media reports.
The so-called Board of Peace is part of a “20-point peace plan” proposed by the US to end the Israel-Hamas conflict in the Gaza Strip. According to the draft charter of this board, it will be chaired by Trump. Membership would be by invitation from the chairman, who would hold key authority over terms, renewals and removals. What shocked the international community even more was that the US plan openly priced the board’s “permanent seats” at $1 billion each. This act of “privatizing” international affairs and “commodifying” regional peace not only disregards the will of the Palestinian people but also poses a huge challenge to the existing international governance system and norms of conduct. … continue

Gaza hospital officials report that Israeli forces killed at least 11 Palestinians in separate attacks across the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, including two 13-year-old boys, three journalists, and a woman.
In one strike, Israeli drones hit the eastern side of the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza, killing a 13-year-old boy, his father, and a 22-year-old man. Officials at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in nearby Deir al-Balah confirmed they had received the bodies.
In a separate attack, the regime’s forces killed three brothers in a tank shelling of Bureij refugee camp, with their bodies taken to the same hospital, officials said.
Another 13-year-old boy was shot dead by Israeli forces while collecting firewood in the eastern town of Bani Suheila, Nasser Hospital confirmed. In footage circulating online, the boy’s father is seen crying over his son’s body on a hospital bed. … Full article

GAZA – Three Palestinian journalists working for the Egyptian Committee were killed on Wednesday in an Israeli strike in central Gaza.
According to media sources, the journalists were martyred in the afternoon when Israeli army aircraft targeted their car near the committee’s displacement camps in the city of al-Zahra in central Gaza.
Anas Ghunaim, Abdul-Raouf Shaath, and Mohamed Qishta were filming and documenting the humanitarian situation on the ground in central Gaza when their car was bombed.
Munir al-Bursh, director-general of the health ministry, told Al Jazeera that the slain photojournalists worked for the Egyptian Committee for Gaza Relief, which supervises Egypt’s relief work in Gaza.
Mohamed Mansour, the committee’s spokesman, told The Associated Press that the journalists were filming a newly established displacement camp. He said the strike occurred about 5 kilometers from the Israeli-controlled area and that the vehicle was known to the Israeli military as belonging to the Egyptian committee.
Video footage circulating online showed their charred, bombed-out vehicle by the roadside, with smoke rising from the wreckage. A fourth person was also killed in the attack, according to Al Jazeera channel.
Israel has been the biggest killer of journalists for three years running, with its army forces killing 260 media professionals since the genocidal war on Gaza started.

A colleague, an editor at a widely read outlet that centered Gaza throughout the two-year genocide, recently voiced his frustration that Gaza is no longer a main focus in the news.
He hardly needed to say it. It is evident that Gaza has already been pushed to the margins of coverage — not only by mainstream Western media, long known for its structural bias in Israel’s favor, but also by outlets often described, accurately or not, as ‘pro-Palestine.’
At first glance, this retreat may appear routine. Gaza during the height of the genocide demanded constant attention; Gaza after the genocide, less so.
But this assumption collapses under scrutiny, because the genocide in Gaza has not ended. … continue

Israeli occupation forces demolished a Palestinian home on Wednesday in the town of Shuqba, west of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank’s central part, after invading the area accompanied by several military bulldozers.
Media sources stated that the soldiers invaded the town at dawn and began demolishing the four‑story home of Ibrahim Abu Farah, leaving the structure in ruins.
Residents reported that soldiers surrounded the area during the offensive and prevented families from approaching.
A report by The Wall & Colonization Resistance Commission reveled that Israeli authorities carried out 538 demolition operations across the occupied West Bank last year, destroying 1,400 structures.
These included 304 inhabited homes, seventy-four uninhabited homes, 270 commercial structures, and 490 agricultural structures.

Illegal paramilitary Israeli colonizers carried out a large‑scale arson attack at dawn on Wednesday in the village of Urif, south of Nablus in the northern occupied West Bank, destroying heavy machinery, vehicles, and equipment at a local quarry in one of the most severe assaults on Palestinian economic infrastructure in recent weeks.
The Palestinian Civil Defense said its crews responded to extensive fires that engulfed three bulldozers, two cargo trucks, and five private vehicles belonging to local resident Essam Safadi at the “North Quarries and Crushers” site.
Firefighters worked for hours to contain the blaze amid continued threats from colonizer groups positioned around the area.
Local witnesses reported that dozens of colonizers stormed the quarry at first light, setting fire to multiple bulldozers (front‑end loaders) and vehicles before physically assaulting two workers.
The Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) confirmed two injuries resulting from the attack, noting that medical teams were initially obstructed from reaching the site due to the presence of armed colonizers.

Later, the ministry said another person was killed in a similar strike targeting a vehicle in the town of Bazuriyeh in the Tyre district.
Israel claimed the attacks targeted fighters from the Lebanese resistance movement “in response to Hezbollah’s repeated violations of the ceasefire understandings.”

I’ll stifle the impulse not to say the obvious, and say it: An Israeli-American regime-change operation is underway in Iran.
It’s “right out of the US-Israel playbook” for such operations, notes Professor John Merisheimer, a scrupulous scholar of “great-power politics,” or, more precisely, of naked imperial power.
First, the US “wrecked the country’s economy through crippling sanctions, making the populace profoundly unhappy, poor, desperate, hungry.” Next, cheek-by-jowl with Israel, massive protests were fomented, confirmation for which came in a December 29, Jerusalem Post article, the headline to which read as follows:
“Mossad spurs Iran protests, say agents with [the] demonstrators, in [a] Farsi message: As protests grow across Iran, the Mossad posted an unusual Farsi message urging demonstrators to act, saying it is with them in the streets, amid rising economic pressure and public unrest.”

Lindsey Graham, the Neo-con Republican Senator, at the Zionist Tzedek conference, gave the real reason for America’s policy of regime change in Iran, namely to isolate the Palestinians in the Middle East and pave the way for Israeli domination.
Graham, referring to regime change in Iran said, “If we can pull this off, it would be the biggest change in the Middle East in a thousand years: Hamas, Hezbollah gone, the Houthis gone, the Iranian people an ally not an enemy, the Arab world moving towards Israel without fear, Saudi-Israel normalize, no more October the 7th”.
In other words, Lindsey Graham and the U.S. believe that regime change in Iran would lead to the collapse of Palestinian resistance and allied groups Hezbollah and Ansar Allah and lead Middle Eastern powers to normalize with Israel without any concessions to Palestinians, thus paving the way for the ethnic cleansing of Gaza and the West Bank, and further expansion into Syria and Lebanon in service of the Greater Israel project. … continue

Paris marked the moment Washington quietly aligned with Ankara and Tel Aviv to close the Kurdish chapter in Syria’s war
By Musa Ozugurlu | The Cradle | January 21, 2026
For nearly 15 years, US flags flew over Syrian territory with near-total impunity – from Kurdish towns to oil-rich outposts. In the northeast, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) manned checkpoints, American convoys moved freely, and local councils governed as if the arrangement was permanent.
The occupation was not formal, but it did not need to be. So long as Washington stayed, the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) had a state in everything but name.
Then, in the first week of January, that illusion was broken. What had passed for a military partnership was quietly dismantled in a Paris backroom – without Kurdish participation, without warning, and without resistance. Within days, Washington’s most loyal proxy in Syria no longer had its protection. … continue

The posturing here (Washington) and there (London and Brussels) around Greenland is just one key indicator of the disintegration of the Western world, which must be included in a sui generis approach.
Indeed, far from being a mere Arctic territory, the island of Greenland reflects a decaying Western world, where alliances are crumbling under the weight of their own duplicity. Europe, paying dearly for its vassalage, is discovering that its American friend is a predator; while NATO, far from being a bulwark of peace, is a shadow play where former allies stab each other in the back, all the while smiling for the cameras. What if Greenland, this white and silent land, were to become the loudest stage for the disintegration of this alliance founded on lies? What if, beneath the melting icebergs, the immutable truth of a vassalized Europe, a predatory America, and an Atlantic alliance that has never been anything but a pact of convenience, cemented not by trust, but by a common hatred of the Other – yesterday the USSR, today China and Russia? Greenland, far from being a periphery, has become the nerve center of a simmering confrontation between “allies” who silently hate each other.
From a geostrategic perspective, this article demonstrates, based on the convergence of the questions raised, how the posturing, first American, then European, around Greenland reveals the long-hidden enmity of the North Atlantic allies. … continue

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelesnky is seeking to get rid of his political opponents ahead of potential presidential elections, Yulia Timoshenko, who leads the Batkivshchina (Fatherland) party’s faction in the parliament, has claimed. The former prime minister called a pending criminal case against her part of this push.
The Ukrainian anti-corruption bodies have charged the former prime minister with organizing a vote-buying scheme. She was accused of paying fellow MPs tens of thousands of dollars in a bid to swing votes in the parliament. Timoshenko dismissed the accusations as politically motivated.
Zelensky seeks to “destroy” her, she claimed during a court hearing on Monday. Those who have “absolutely different positions ideologically” to that of the Ukrainian leader are “getting purged” ahead of a potential peace deal and elections, she maintained, claiming that the case against her is linked to her party’s popularity across the country.
The Ukrainian leader hit back on Monday, saying Timoshenko’s case has nothing to do with politics. “Seriously, I do not see how it is related to the elections in Ukraine,” he told journalists.
Last week, Timoshenko called the current government in Kiev a “de facto fascist regime.” … Full article

The European Parliament has voted to refer a trade agreement with the South American bloc Mercosur to the EU Court of Justice (CJEU). The move comes amid criticism of Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for bypassing normal EU procedures and widespread protests from farmers across the bloc.
On Saturday, the EU signed a trade pact with Mercosur members Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The agreement that was projected to create the world’s biggest free trade zone still requires approval before it can take effect.
On Wednesday, the EU Parliament voted 334 in favor to 324 against, with 11 abstentions, to ask the CJEU to determine whether the deal is compatible with the bloc’s rules. The move now significantly delays the pact that had been negotiated for 25 years, and could potentially derail final approval.
The vote took place against the backdrop of criticism of von der Leyen for handling the Mercosur deal in a non-transparent way, splitting it into separate agreements to bypass national parliaments and reduce the European Parliament’s role to a formal opinion.
The deal has also faced widespread resistance from the agricultural sector, with farmers across the bloc staging mass protests over concerns that cheap imports could undercut their livelihoods. The latest rally began on Tuesday outside the European Parliament in Strasbourg and drew support from some lawmakers, continued overnight, and ended on Wednesday. … continue

Let me take you on a tour of Britain’s future. It’s 2030, there are more surveillance cameras than people, your toaster is reporting your breakfast habits to the Home Office, and police officers are no longer investigating crimes so much as predicting them.
This is Pre-Crime UK, where the weight of the law is used against innocent people that an algorithm suspects may be about to commit a crime.
With a proposal that would make Orwell blush, the British police are testing a hundred new AI systems to figure out which ones can best guess who’s going to commit a crime.
That’s right: guess. Not catch, not prove. Guess. Based on data, assumptions, and probably your internet search history from 2011.
Behind this algorithmic escapade is Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, who has apparently spent the last few years reading prison blueprints and dystopian fiction, not as a warning about authoritarian surveillance, but as aspiration.
In a jaw-dropping interview with former Prime Minister and Digital ID peddler Tony Blair, she said, with her whole chest: “When I was in justice, my ultimate vision for that part of the criminal justice system was to achieve, by means of AI and technology, what Jeremy Bentham tried to do with his Panopticon. Washington claims the war has entered a ‘second phase,’ but conditions in Gaza show no power shift, no end to violence, and no real sovereignty
By Mohammad al-Ayoubi | The Cradle | January 20, 2026
The announcement arrived wrapped in the familiar choreography of diplomacy. Carefully chosen language, optimistic briefings, and reassurances that the war on Gaza had reached a new stage, one that would ease suffering and open the door to political reordering.
According to Washington, “phase two” of the ceasefire agreement had begun, signaling a move away from annihilation toward stability, governance, and transition.
In Gaza, the reality was less abstract. Israeli drones continued to hover above neighborhoods already reduced to rubble, Rafah remained sealed, bodies still arrived at hospitals, and Israeli forces showed no sign of withdrawal.
Aid trickled in sporadically, reconstruction remained a distant promise, and the daily mechanics of siege carried on uninterrupted. Nothing that defines a genuine shift in conditions or authority had materially changed, except the vocabulary used to describe it.
The question raised by the US announcement is therefore not whether ‘phase two’ has begun, but whether it was ever intended to exist as anything more than a political abstraction.
Is this a real transition in the trajectory of the war, or another exercise in linguistic repackaging meant to stabilize Israel’s position without addressing the foundations of the conflict itself?
The historical record leaves little room for doubt. US involvement in Palestine has consistently revolved around managing the scale and visibility of violence, calibrating its intensity in ways that safeguard Israel’s strategic dominance while containing diplomatic fallout.
Read in this context, ‘phase two’ emerges as a political device rather than a substantive shift. It is a framework meant to absorb the aftermath of mass destruction, shield Israel from international isolation, and reorder Palestinian life under post-war conditions, all while leaving untouched the structures that made the war inevitable. … continue

Christian schools in Jerusalem staged a week-long strike to protest what they described as systematic and deliberate restrictions imposed by Israel.
Israel has prevented more than 230 teachers from the West Bank from obtaining permits to enter Jerusalem and carry out their work as usual in these schools.
These restrictions are not limited to permits or to Christian schools alone. Israeli authorities have long obstructed education in the city through multiple mechanisms, most notably preventing the provision of new classrooms, conducting frequent raids on schools, arresting and searching students and teachers, closing some schools under various pretexts, and preventing the renovation of their buildings.
There are 15 Christian schools in Jerusalem, educating more than 12,000 students from the city. They are considered among the oldest and most prestigious schools.
Since 2002, when Israel erected the apartheid wall around Jerusalem, it has prevented Palestinians from the West Bank from entering the city except with a special permit. This permit is granted only to specific categories, such as certain patients, workers, or employees, and for a very limited period.
More than 230 teachers from Bethlehem, who have been working in Christian schools in Jerusalem since before the construction of the apartheid wall, are now forced to obtain special permits to continue their work.
Richard Zananiri, principal of the Bishop’s School in Jerusalem, told us that they were surprised by Israel’s refusal to grant the necessary permits to a large number of teachers. This has disrupted the school year and forced Christian schools to close their doors in protest against this new and punitive Israeli measure.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said Europe is now facing the consequences of its past betrayal of Iran as it confronts a similar treatment by the United States.
The top diplomat made the remarks in a post on X on Wednesday, reminding how European states violated a nuclear agreement with the Islamic Republic, which had been signed in 2015, on Washington’s cue. The betrayal saw the European trio of the UK, France, and Germany stop their trade with Iran after the US left the nuclear deal in 2018.
According to Araghchi, the same European states, who obeyed the US by disrespecting the deal, had now been forced to stomach the “blowback” from this betrayal.
The backlash, he noted, had manifested itself in the form of the states’ now facing a similar unilateral approach by Washington that is trying to threaten them into handing over Greenland’s control. … Full article
François Asselineau, leader of French opposition party the Union Populaire Republicaine, points out that President Macron backed the US’s illegal military operation in Venezuela, but is now talking about ‘international law’ when it comes to Greenland.
“He approved Trump asserting the law of the strongest over international law,” Asselineau says. But now “he finds himself forced to call for a return to international law and multilateralism in an attempt to counter Trump’s desire to press his advantage by laying claim to Greenland.”
Macron’s WEF statement “about the need for European unanimity” only “touches on Europe’s permanent problem — that Europe doesn’t really exist,” the French opposition party leader stressed.
“It’s a fictitious entity made up of 27 states with different national interests,” Asselineau says. “We can already see this with Greenland. For example, there are several states that are not very critical of Donald Trump.”
Calling Macron’s position “extremely fragile,” he stresses that France is now “on very bad terms” with global powers including the US, China and Russia.
“It’s something like the twilight of the Macron presidency,” Asselineau argues. “Like many French people, I hope it ends as quickly as possible.”

Brussels will be the bigger “loser” after pausing the ratification of the August 2025 framework agreement on a trade deal with the US. The latter’s massive trade deficit with Europe is simply too large, economics professor Daniel Lacalle says.
“The trade surplus with the United States is very large [$138B from Q1 through Q3 2025, ed.]. I do not think that it is a positive outcome for anyone…as the US may also suffer in terms of prices of imports,” Lacalle told Sputnik.
The observer doesn’t expect the deal to be done away with altogether, given its promise of putting an end to trade wars with cross-the-board tariffs of 15% on most European exports, and 0% on an array of US imports.
But the US’s massive deficit makes it much less sensitive to further tariff barriers than Brussels.
The European Parliament formally paused ratification of the trade pact on Tuesday amid Washington’s threats of tariffs over Greenland.

The drills involve over 10,000 troops from 11 countries: Germany, Italy, France, the UK, Spain, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Greece, and Türkiye. The primary goal is to assess the bloc’s readiness for the rapid deployment of substantial forces. The exercises will continue until mid-March.
At first glance, it might seem like just another NATO exercise. But here’s the catch: The US is not taking part. The initiative is purely European, and aims to achieve two main objectives. Firstly, it seeks to demonstrate that Europe is strong, unafraid of American influence, and capable of protecting its interests – not only by producing AI animations about heroic Vikings defending Greenland, but through real military strength.
The second goal is to find out whether Europe can operate independently, without US support. The answer is probably not. It’s no secret that 70% of NATO’s budget comes from US contributions. But beyond finances, NATO intelligence is primarily reliant on the US. Satellite communication, coordination, and command structures are also all built around a model in which the US acts as the ‘big brother’ to its European partners.

Commenting on the topics discussed by Foreign Minister Lavrov in his 2025 diplomacy year-in-review presser, Daffodil International University journalism professor and international politics expert Greg Simons detailed two main themes: Ukraine and the breakdown of the so-called ‘rules-based international order’.
The Greenland crisis shows that “when you are such a servile lackey as the EU, eventually you get to be ‘on the menu’, especially when the US empire, this Pax Americana, is in decline,” Dr. Simons told Sputnik.
“The EU has nowhere to go.” Their leaders “can bluster, they can try and bluff, but to use Trump’s terminology, they have absolutely no cards… They have no honor, they have no dignity, they have no respect, either for themselves or the EU. So this is not going to go well for the EU.” … continue

The New Scientist recently published “The Pacific Islanders fighting to save their homes from catastrophe” by Katie McQue and Sean Gallagher. The article claims that small Pacific island nations face an existential threat from rising seas and intensifying storms driven by climate change, with displacement already underway and submergence looming. This article is factually false and unsupported by real-world data. The piece relies on emotive anecdotes and dire projections while ignoring a substantial body of empirical research showing that many low-lying islands and atolls are stable or growing, keeping pace with sea-level rise rather than succumbing to it.
The article asserts that “rising seas are anything but a distant projection,” that high tides now regularly inundate areas that “used to stay dry,” and that island nations such as Tuvalu could be “almost completely submerged at high tide by the end of the century.” It further suggests that climate-driven sea-level rise is already forcing migration and poses an existential risk. These claims are presented as settled science, yet New Scientist fails to engage with the very studies that have directly measured island change over time.
Actual surveys of island nations tell a very different story. As summarized in Climate at a Glance’s evidence-based review “Islands and Sea Level Rise,” dozens of peer-reviewed studies using aerial photography, satellite imagery, and on-the-ground surveys show that the majority of low-lying coral islands have remained stable or increased in land area over recent decades. Research on atolls in the Pacific and Indian Oceans finds that sediment transport, reef dynamics, and natural island-building processes allow islands to adjust to gradual sea-level rise. In other words, these islands are not passive sand piles waiting to drown; they are dynamic landforms.

Two Palestinians were killed and two others injured in Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip on Monday, marking a new violation of last year’s ceasefire deal, medical sources said, Anadolu reports.
A medical source said a child was shot in the head by Israeli forces and died of his wounds in al-Mawasi area of Rafah in southern Gaza. The age of the child was not specified.
The source said a 17-year-old Palestinian was also killed after being shot in the abdomen by Israeli fire and was admitted to Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza.
Israeli army forces also shot and critically injured a 20-year-old man in the southern city of Khan Younis, the source added.
A second Palestinian youth was wounded in an Israeli bomb explosion in northern Gaza.
Local sources said an Israeli drone dropped a bomb on a group of civilians in the town of Beit Lahiya, injuring the young man in an area from which Israeli forces had withdrawn.
Israeli artillery shelling was also reported in the eastern areas of Deir al-Balah in central Gaza and al-Tuffah neighborhood in Gaza City. Israeli forces also fired randomly east of the town of Jabalia in northern Gaza.

The Israeli Security Ministry has halted approval of a planned United States takeover of Amprest Systems, a company whose command-and-control software forms a core component of the Iron Dome specialized anti-air system, citing concerns over non-Israeli control of classified military technology.
The proposed deal would see US-listed Ondas Holdings acquire control of Amprest in a transaction valuing the company at more than $200 million. Under the proposed terms, Ondas would acquire the shares held by Amprest’s existing shareholders, excluding Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, in a transaction valued at approximately $100 million, leaving Rafael a minority stake in the company.
Security officials involved in the review have reportedly raised objections to a non-Israeli entity gaining control over Amprest, given the company’s central role in Iron Dome and other Israeli anti-air programs that involve classified command-and-control capabilities. … continue

The most disturbing lesson from the 2014 Maidan Revolution in Ukraine that has been well-learned by the various intelligence agencies in this business is that the application of extreme violence – especially aimed at law enforcement, other state authorities, and civilians – provides an effective template upon which to further the regime change narrative. Everything can be blamed on “the regime” and thus serve the purpose of the operation.

Amid the foreign-instigated riots and terrorism that struck Iran in recent weeks, a parallel narrative war also unfolded, centered on the deliberate propagation of wildly inflated and unverifiable casualty figures.
These figures were designed to manufacture global outrage and legitimize calls for American military intervention and yet another aggression against the Islamic Republic.
The discourse surrounding riot-related casualties in the past few weeks has been fundamentally shaped by a coordinated disinformation campaign originating from US-funded organizations operating entirely outside Iran. Central to this campaign was the circulation of sensational death tolls that bore little resemblance to verifiable facts on the ground.
The figure of 12,000 deaths was initially promoted by the New York–based Center for Human Rights in Iran, an organization financially linked to the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), a US Congress–funded entity with a well-documented history of interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states.
This claim was presented without transparent methodology, primary data, or independent verification, raising eyebrows both inside and outside the country.
Despite this lack of evidence, the narrative was uncritically amplified by major Western media outlets and online influencers, creating a pervasive – but demonstrably false – impression of mass violence. Iranian officials consistently rejected these claims, presenting forensic evidence of manipulated datasets and instead reporting a death toll in the hundreds, the majority of whom were security personnel and civilians killed by armed rioters with foreign backing.
The subsequent escalation of these figures to even more implausible numbers – such as claims of 52,000 dead – underscores the persistence of a hybrid warfare strategy aimed at demonizing Iran while obscuring or outright excusing the violence committed by its adversaries. … continue

Vitol Group has offered Venezuelan crude oil cargoes to Chinese buyers at discounts of around $5 per barrel to ICE Brent, signaling a bid to test Chinese firms’ demand for the Latin American country’s heavy, sour grades, Bloomberg reported, citing traders familiar with the matter.
If deals go through, the cargoes are expected to be delivered in the second half of April, traders said. The move underscores renewed efforts by major US-based trading houses to place Venezuelan barrels in Asia, with China remaining a key destination.
Venezuela’s Merey crude has historically been among the cheapest globally, with Asia, particularly China, absorbing large volumes. Before US President Donald Trump ordered the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, discounts on delivered barrels to Brent were as wide as $15 per barrel. The narrower spread now being tested suggests a recalibration of pricing after the US allowed for larger sales of Venezuelan crude, revenues it seeks to exploit. In recent years, Vitol has operated under licenses issued by the US Treasury that allow the loading and sale of Venezuelan crude. Under this imposed framework, proceeds from oil sales are directed into US-controlled bank accounts, a mechanism Washington claims is intended to manage revenues of Venezuela’s oil industry. … continue
MOSCOW – The preliminary increase in commercial, or production-ready, oil reserves in 2025 was 490 million tonnes, while gas reserves will increase by 650 billion cubic meters, Oleg Kazanov, the head of Russia’s Federal Agency for Mineral Resources (Rosnedra), told Sputnik.
“It’s worth noting that some sites are still undergoing assessment, but according to preliminary data, we have seen an increase in oil reserves of approximately 666 million tonnes, of which 490 million tonnes are ABC1 commercial reserves, meaning they are ready for production. Gas reserves are 679 billion cubic meters, of which 650 billion cubic meters are commercial reserves,” he said.
Russian oil production in 2025 will be roughly the same as last year, at 516 million tonnes, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak announced in late December. Gas production increased by 7.6% year-on-year in 2024, reaching approximately 685 billion cubic meters, he said earlier. Russian Energy Minister Sergei Tsivilev told reporters in mid-December that he expected this figure to be maintained in 2025.

Apparently, Kiev, the Ukrainian capital, is nearing total collapse. The city’s mayor, Vitaly Klitschko, recently asked residents to leave their homes immediately and seek shelter in surrounding areas due to the inability to guarantee adequate electricity, heating, and water supply for all citizens. The supply crisis occurs amidst a dangerous escalation of the conflict that has forced the Russian side to intensify attacks against critical Ukrainian infrastructure. However, it is not possible to rule out that the local mayor is using the measure as a kind of political tool against the illegitimate president Vladimir Zelensky, who has long been his rival.
Klitschko urged Kiev residents to leave the city. He confirmed during an interview with Reuters that Kiev, for the first time in its history, lacks the capacity to guarantee heating for all residents. The situation is critical, severely aggravated by the harsh winter, with frosts more severe than in recent years.
He clarified that Ukrainian authorities are working continuously to resolve the problem, doing “everything possible and impossible” to ensure that as many cities as possible receive an appropriate supply. However, given the infrastructure difficulties in the capital, the most advisable course of action is for residents to simply evacuate. … continue
With the United States bearing down on Greenland and telling its European allies to stop complaining, the prospects of the US disengaging from NATO now practically becomes a “central pillar of the America First strategic doctrine,” London-based foreign affairs analyst Adriel Kasonta tells Sputnik.
The US, Kasonta explains, has two motivations in this ongoing “process of strategic de-prioritization”:
- Strategic – the US has been gradually retreating from global primacy while instead focusing on the Western Hemisphere and the Indo-Pacific, seeking to switch from global hegemony to regional hegemony
- Financial – as the US military spending soars while the European powers struggle to meet their more modest NATO spending commitments, the US regards the current arrangement as “an unsustainable subsidy of European social welfare at the expense of American fiscal health.”
If US does decide to formally disengage from NATO, it would likely do so in a “military-first, political-last” sequence, Kasonta suggests:
- Since the current US legislation stipulates that a two-thirds Senate majority is needed for a formal treaty withdrawal, the White House might instead opt to “hollow out the alliance from within”
- While the US would remain a member on paper, it would cease participating in the Integrated Military Command and ignore Article 5 commitments
- The Pentagon’s efforts to restructure the US European Command may indicate this approach, as it allows the US to remain a NATO member on paper while shifting high-readiness US forces from Europe to the Pacific theater
According to Kasonta, we are witnessing the emergence of a “post-hegemonic” security architecture, with a US-led NATO being replaced by a ‘Europeanized NATO’ where “European states lead the defense of their own continent.”

People have queried what is happening in Australia with their push for a decarbonised all renewables/ Net Zero grid since the last update in 2023. The answer is not much progress but massive amounts of money spent. […]
The promised new pumped storage and transmission lines to support the renewables are bogged down by delays. Snowy 2.0 looks like it will be near a decade late and an order of magnitude more expensive with less storage capacity that originally promised. About the scheme, Robert Onfray in late 2023 substack post wrote “ In January this year, the project made headlines again after it was announced there would be a one-year delay. Then, in May, another announcement pushed the estimated completion out another two years. In five months, the official completion date has been delayed by three years, from 2026 to 2029. When first announced by Turnbull, Snowy 2.0 was going to be built by 2022. The construction cost estimate has blown out ten-fold to $20 billion, plus $10 billion for the plant and another $9 billion for 1,000 kilometres of 500kV transmission line connections to Sydney and Melbourne”. The energy company that is building it is currently preparing the latest price and commissioning estimate. Despite their promises, it won’t be the final one.
About the engineering aspects of the scheme, he wrote “Snowy 2.0, on the other hand, will be a giant, expensive, inefficient battery that will consume water and electricity to produce very little electricity, in contrast to the original Snowy Mountains Hydro Scheme’s excellent reputation and engineering excellence. … It is no secret in engineering circles that the Snowy 2.0 tunnels are far too long for an efficient pumped hydro system. Leading geologists and engineers know that the geological conditions for tunnelling in a typical tectonically induced alpine geology with opposing faults, tight folds, shears, bedding plane shears, and abutting perched waters are challenging and expensive. They knew this from geotechnical reports from the original Snowy scheme. And they were right, as the project costs have blown out way behind original estimates. It is simply remarkable that this project went ahead at all. It was doomed because of geology alone, let alone the defective concept.” No doubt it went ahead because the incompetent people advising the incompetent Prime Minister of the time thought he needed a good soundbite of a “vision” as his legacy. He will be remembered for it, but not in the way he dreamt.
The giant pumped storage in Queensland was cancelled by a new government that baulked at the cost. – even more expensive than Snowy 2 The smaller one at Borumba still hasn’t been committed to by the state but has Federal approval (and money) for exploratory works. The timeline for that is ridiculously ambitious and even if it goes ahead, it will be late and invariably overbudget. – they still haven’t confirmed the geology yet. The new transmission lines to bring in power to the cities, replacing the coal fired stations, from yet to be built solar and wind are overbudget and held up with planning delays. For some reason the city elites can’t understand, farmers don’t want all the pylons and power lines crossing their land with all the use restrictions with it. The woke are very big on Aboriginal land acknowledgements but not so for farmers who have been there generations. As the link mentions, these transmission lines will also need Federal concessional finance, aka subsidies. […]
There has been little decarbonisation since 2020. Aging, increasingly unreliable coal fired power stations are still the backbone of the electricity supply. The price of energy is inexorably rising. Australian governments, both State or Federal, are subsidising domestic solar and batteries, subsidising grid wind and solar generation, subsidising fossil fuel plant to stay generating to do what the unreliable wind and solar can’t, and subsidising consumers as power is too expensive.
