Winter is Here

February is almost over, and we have had more winter in the first 2 months of 2018 than the past 3-5 years combined! So many days where it has snowed two or more inches, usually more, and made a mess of the roads and parking lots while at the same time making the companies who plow those same parking lots and roads very happy. Even teenagers are getting into the act by offering to shovel driveways and sidewalks for neighbors – well my neighbor boys and a couple from church have anyway.

The weather we have been experiencing has been much like I remember from growing up in Anchorage back in the 1970’s and 1980’s with 5-6 inches of snow per week. People were not complaining about the lack of snow back then for skiing or snow machining as they have been known to do for the past several years when the city of Anchorage had to import snow for the Fur Rondy races (one year it had to be shipped down from Fairbanks in rail cars!) and the Iditarod. This year that is not an issue, there is plenty of snow all over Anchorage.

I don’t mind the snow, it makes everything look so pretty when it’s here, and since I live in Alaska I expect to have snow in the winter and am disappointed when it doesn’t appear. I do hate when we get dumped on and hubby isn’t home to help me deal with it. My asthma does not allow me to go out and move very much of the snow. Even with our snow blower, I struggle with not having an asthma attack. Fortunately, my neighbors have 2 teenage boys who like to make money and are willing to come over and shovel me out. Then there is a family at church, the husband in my hubby’s hunting partner, that will come over and have my driveway all cleared up much faster than my daughter and I could ever hope to do it.

I have photos but for some reason, they do not want to load so I may try to do so at a later date. For now just imagine lots of snow, white walls along the driveway, and leaping trails by dogs.

Christmas Traditons

Well here we are in the final month of 2015. Christmas is just over 2 short weeks away and there is so much more yet to do. Thanksgiving has passed, and it was a delicious day I must admit. Usually I have my Christmas tree up by now, however due to my husband being sick right after Thanksgiving and the fact that there is now a puppy in our house, the tree trimming has been delayed.

Thankfully one tradition, that I get to appreciate but do not have to work on, has been taken care of. That tradition is the star of Anchorage. Each year on a mountain on the eastern border of JBER (Joint Base Elmandorf Richardson) there is a huge star that is lit on the day after Thanksgiving.

Mini Vacation ~ March

I do not have much battery left on my laptop and the only place to get online here at the Alyeska Hotel is in the public areas. We have had a wonderful day. Last night we swam after checking in and just enjoyed being with our friends. Today the boys hit the slopes and the rest of us met them up on top for lunch. I will have pictures up by Thursday some time as I don’t that I’ll have time to do anything with them before that.

Money Dreams ~ Tax Free Dreaming

What would you do with a million dollars, tax free?

The above question was recieved in an email that I get from the Post A Day/Week people here at WordPress. They send out emails to those who are doing this challenge to provide topics from which participants can create posts. I have not used many, actually I think this may be the first one, as I either had other topics I wanted to cover or just did not post. This one sounded good as I do not know many people who haven’t thought about this question themselves at one time or another.

So what would I do with $1,000,000.00 tax free?

To start with I would give $100,000 to the Church. By that I mean that part of it would go to my local church, part would go to the mission department of my denomination, and part would go to the college I attended for 4 years.

I would probably put $100,000 into a fund for each of my children for their future educational needs. So that would be $200,000 total there.

I would pay off our home, buy some land, and then put the remaining money into accounts for my husband’s and my retirement.  I know that one day hubby will want to be able to spend winters someplace warmer than Alaska, a place where he could enjoy the sun, surf and sand.

As long as I could still have my white, meaning snow, Christmas I will be fine with that plan.

Now this is different. You really should click on the photo to see what this is all about.

What about you?

What would you do with $1,000,000 tax free?

I really want to know. You can leave a comment about what you would do below or let me know that you have blogged about this topic so that I can read your post.

Snowed In….

It does not matter where you live, at some point there will be some event that will force you to stay home or keep you where you are for a period of time. I am not talking about the work place unless a circumstance, such as a natural happening (not your boss), keeps you from being able to leave. Continue reading

Something I Am Looking Forward to in 2011

WordPress began a blogging challenge to those who are blog challenged, as it were. They have put together the “Post-A-Week” and “Post-A-Day” challenges to help bloggers like me who are challenged when it comes to keeping up with our blogs. To help they send out emails with post suggestions. The other day they had a link  another blog that is doing a blogging challenge as well. This blog has some great ideas that I will be incorporating during the year.

Something that I am looking forward to in 2011 would be taking a trip to Louisville, KY in July. I will be going with both my kids as part of a group of teens (those having completed 8th grade through those just graduated from high school) and sponsoring adults (I will be a sponsor) to Nazarene Youth Congress – NYC. Right now we are going through the process of getting the paperwork completed, sent in and raising the money to go.

When I was a teenager (way back in the early 1980s) I had an opportunity to attend this same event, however I did not understand what this was all about until it was too late. My son went the first time in 2007 and enjoyed it so much that he wants to go again now that he is older and has a better understanding of what it is all about. I strongly believe that this will be a life changing experience for my kids, the teens from our district as well as myself.

If you think of me at the beginning of July please pray for all that will be attending this event. That hearts will be changed, walks will be strengthened, and calls will be heard.

Winter Blues

Many people have accused me of being a bit strange in that I like winter. I have my reasons, I have even posted about my reasons for liking this season. Some reasons include the lack of insects/bugs being annoying, very few motor homes and tour buses clogging the highways, and the sheer beauty of the mountains I am surrounded by.

One thing that I do not like about this season, at least in Alaska, is the long duration of our winters – 6+ months. The shortness of the days does not bother me too much though if we have too many consecutive gray days I do find my mind lingering on depressing  thoughts. Another thing I am not fond of with winter would be the sickies that seem to abound.  With so many of us staying inside the germs seem to multiply and spread at amazing speeds.

November saw me succumb to a nasty winter cold which my son first picked up and then shared with me. I thought that I had taught him what to share and what not to. I have distinct memories of teaching him to share toys, food and other good things but that he was not supposed to share germs. That is why we wash our hands with soap and water regularly. Obviously he did not quite get this concept into his head.

*Please know that my son has apologized several times for sharing this cold with me.*

Monday I finaly went to the doctor, an urgent care clinic, where I spent about 3.5 hours before I walked out after paying and having my 3 prescriptions faxed to my local grocery store pharmacy. My hubby had told our son to urge me to go to the doctor because if I was not better, on the mend, hubby’s first task come Wednesday would be to get me to a doctor even if it meant going to the ER. I am so glad that I had already decided to go to the urgent care clinic on Monday as there is no way I would want to go to the ER.

You may be wondering why I titled this post “Winter Blues” well that is because this cold has caused me to have them. I really hate being sick and I am so not enjoying being so miserable that I cannot get into the spirit of Christmas. Usually I have already put up our Nativity, the tree and traded out the everyday dishes for the Christmas ones. None of this has been done as I cannot go under the house without setting myself up for a coughing fit because of the dust down there. Sending the kids down would be aggravating as they don’t know where everything is and I do not necessarily want everything up at once. With the tree and Nativity not set up I just am having trouble getting into the spirit of the season. Hopefully by next week I will be able to say that Christmas is officially in my house.

PS For those who have made it this far would you be so kind as to let me know what you think of the new Christmas look. So far this blog and my browser are the only parts of my life that come close to being in the Christmas spirit.

Seasons

I love the seasons. Having 4 distinct seasons is really very nice.

Winter is the time of cold temperatures, pure white snowfalls (no I do not like the dirty, yucky stuff), white capped mountains and mountain/outdoor sports. This is the time of year for serious layering of clothing and bedding. It is also the time of spiced cider, meat stews, hot cocoa, bonfires on black lit nights, and ice skating parties on the lake or pond. The time of hats, mittens, gloves and scarves as well as heavy sweaters and heavy coats. This is the time to sit in front of the fireplace with your sweetheart just talking and enjoying one another.

Spring is when the warm weather pushes away the cold of winter and allow the new life under ground to break free to reach for the sky. This is when we begin thinking of iced tea and fruit smoothies. We break out the short sleeve shirts and floral garments to remind our skin what sunshine feels like. The stores begin selling tanning and sun screen lotions. We begin to dream of time at the beach with bonfires to roast weenies at.

Summer tends to be when we look forward to vacations to the mountains and back country to escape the heat – for those of you in the Lower 49 anyway as we in Alaska go to the back country all year long but not to escape the heat just the crowds. Summer is the time of year when the necklines get lower and lower (not a good thing) and the shorts get higher and higher so that we see more leg than is really necessary. We dread the electric bill each month based on how many days we have to have the AC on – well not up here since only large stores tend to have any because it is not a good use of one’s money to have an AC unit for just 2 days each year.

Autumn is when the leaves begin to change color. The degree of color change largely depends on where you are and how quickly the temperatures drop. This is the time when we think about making sure we will have sufficient tread on our tires so that we can deal with the snow and ice of the coming season. This is when we make preparations for making sure the furnace works properly as well as checking for drafts. We bring out the warmer clothes and put away the cooler items.

All that to say that I love each season but many times I wish that autumn and spring would last a little longer. We had a beautiful Indian Summer up here and then all of sudden the temperatures dropped, we had a wind storm and not the only green is that of the spruce trees! Time to send the kids out to earn some money by raking the leaves and putting the summer stuff up so we’ll be ready for winter that is fast approaching.

Enjoy the seasons while you have them.

Simple Woman’s Daybook ~ August 9, 2010

FOR TODAY… Monday, August 9, 2010carview.php?tsp=

Outside my window… there are gray skies and the look of dreariness.

I am thinking… that sunshine, not matter how little, is calming to the soul – well at least mine, I just wish I had some right about now.

I am thankful for… so much but today – warm shirts.

I am wearing... my night clothes still as I’ve been busy since I got up and need to change to go to the gym before dressing for the day.

I am remembering… that peace and comfort for my soul does not come from the people I am with or the weather but from the indwelling of the Holy Spirit – and why I need to remember this each and every day as it is so easy to allow my circumstances to distract me from that truth.

I am going… to the gym (I have to get back to doing this on a regular basis), the book fair, and then who knows where.

I am currently reading… Ever After by Karen Kingsbury. I am finding her books as well as those by Lori Wick to be very thought provoking.

I am hoping… that when the Alaska State Fair opens on the 26th we will begin to have some nice sunny weather, we could certainly use it.

On my mind… how often do I allow things get in the way of what is really important in my life. I take my eyes off of Jesus and things begin to go wrong. When I get my focus back on Him life may still be crazy but I know Who is in charge and am able to deal with life so much better.

Noticing that… my kids are growing up and I did not really mess them up too badly! My mother tells me that she went through the same thing with my brother and me, she had to learn to let God take care of us since He could always be there.

Pondering these words… “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6

From the kitchen… nothing, I have nothing going on in there at all. I really need to get back to planning my weekly meals for dinner if nothing else. The last dinner that I truly cooked was about 2 weeks ago this coming Thursday when I made tacos for the family. Shameful.

Around the house… the kids are doing whatever in their rooms. The dogs are napping, better than being outside barking or whining.

One of my favorite things… taking time to have coffee or tea with a good friend.

From my picture journal…

A New Look ~ Freshening Up

Thanks to my friends who noticed the new look around here. I will admit that after reading some of your blogs that were recently changed, you know who you are, I got to thinking that the myth about Alaska being a frozen wasteland, or worse a wilderness to be put under lock and key (but that is a post for a different time) needed to be dispelled. Of course I could not completely change it – notice the snow capped mountain, some stay that way all year round due to their height (this one, Pioneer Peak, does not but I do not have a good photo of Mt. McKinley that is my own to use) so it seems fitting to stay long term.

The theme being used this time around allows for changing the back ground of the blog, something that Blogger has allowed for quite some time and I am thrilled that WordPress is doing likewise. Actually two of WP’s latest themes allow for this though this theme allows more personal back grounds than the other one, Sheri is using it on her crochet blog.

If you are getting tired of your current theme on WP then maybe it is time for a change, time to freshen things up. WP seems to be adding 2 new themes a month now so there are plenty to chose from. If you do change make sure to blog about it so we can all see what you have done with your “place” 🙂
