FOR TODAY… September 14, 2009

Outside my window… I can see blue sky through the trees, which are changing color as I type. The fireweed is is living up to its name and reputation.

I am thinking… that I am tired of sickness within my house but I am so blessed that I have so many good friends who are praying for my family.

I am thankful for… what I mentioned above, friends who care enough to pray and encourage me in the good times and the bad.

From the learning rooms… not much going on here with all the sickness that is happening. This will certainly be taking away from the scheduled break times. This may be a good time for me to visit the library though and pick up some needed/required school reading for both kids. They are so going to love me!! Continue reading

WFMW ~ August 26, 2009 – Gas Prices

carview.php?tsp=I am sure that it is no surprise to anyone that your bank account seems to be holding less money today than it did in the spring. For my family the money seems to be going more and more for fuel in the vehicles. We thought that when the prices began going down last year about this time (Alaska suspended its gas tax though I think it is back 🙄  ) that it would not be going to high again – yeah we were wrong.

If you look to the top right corner under my header you will see a widget for Gas Buddy which tells you what the high and low gas prices are in Anchorage, Alaska (not where I live but I do fuel up there regularly) which is anywhere from $.10 – $.40 lower than what we pay where I live. By going to their web site before driving the 50+ miles to Anchorage I check to see where the lowest price gasoline is so that I’ll know where to go to fill my tank and gas cans.

Now we have a few businesses that have put in gas pumps in their parking lots and offered fuel at slightly lower prices than the fuel stations offer. The ones that have done this are Costco, Carrs (part of the Safeway chain) and Fred Meyer (part of the Kroger chain). Over all Costco has the lowest prices but you do have to have membership to use them and they are not open 24/7, their fueling hours are 6:30am to 9:30pm which can make it difficult to get fuel when you actually need it. Both Carrs and Fred Meyer have their own rewards cards that you can use to get lower prices when you fill up. Since I do not shop at Carrs very often, for several reason which I will not go into today, I do not use their pumps. I do however shop at Fred Meyer regularly and so I earn quite a few fuel rewards points.

Fred Meyer recently changed their fuel rewards program so that you are able to better benefit at the pump by shopping in their stores. Where they used to allow card holders to buy gas as $.03 off per gallon and then for every 100 fuel points earned the month before you could do one fuel up at $.10 off per gallon. They have changed the program to the point that the last 2 times I have filled up my vehicle I was able to buy gas at $.30 off per gallon!! I saved $.26 per gallon each time by getting gas at Fred Meyer instead of at Costco.

The way I look at it Fred Meyer is doing a good job of helping the economy, and themselves as well, by providing me with an incentive to buy more from them. I am willing to do this because I have found their prices to be lower of a vast majority of what I buy, the customer service I receive is very good, the store is clean (even if the closest one to me is going through a huge remodel at this time) and the quality is excellent.

Saving money, in any form, works for me.

Wasilla – We Have Sunshine!

The sun is finally shining brightly here, hopefully the clouds filled with rain have headed north to help with the fires there. So to celebrate the sun being out I think that I will head out to the garage, I have opened it up to help air out, and begin organizing my pantry as I promised to do before hubby comes home. I will be back late with photo updates for your viewing pleasure. 🙂

Update: lots of pictures but I am not done yet.

Works For Me Wednesday ~ Saving via Coupons

Due to the difficult times we are living in, economically speaking, I have been trying to find new ways in which to save my family money. There are things that we need, a newer vehicle for one, but in order to purchace one we need to have carview.php?tsp=enough money saved so that we do not have to borrow as much – this could also cause us to receive a lower interest rate if we do have to borrow.

Part of my efforts to save money at the grocery store has involved planting a garden of sorts. I have romaine lettuce going – it is wonderful to go out the front door, pick some lettuce and make a wonderful salad to have at lunch or dinner – as well as tomatoes and strawberries. For just over a week now I’ve been able to pick red, luscious strawberries to add to cereal or yogurt or to just eat alone. At this point I am picking at least a half dozen each day and loving every minute of it. I have almost 2 dozen tomatoes that are ripening and on that is maybe a day or two from being picked!

I also have raspberrie plants in the green house but I do not think I will be getting anything from them this summer or fall but I expect to have fruit next fall.

Hubby and I are already planning on how big to build the permanent green house for next spring and summer! He is also thinking of ways in which he can help in this area and we are gathering more information on what to plant and how soon to begin.

But my current garden is not really what I want to share today. What I want to share is a blog that was begun by two ladies who live in Anchorage, Alaska. They were featured on the local NBC affiliate this week on the launching of their blog and how they are helping their fellow Alaskans save money at the grocery store. Some of what they do is similar to the Grocery Game but not entirely. They focus on the stores that are up here. They also do not limit themselves to just the grocery savings, for instance today they blogged about a great savings that can be found at Target this week that could save lots of money for Christmas!

By now I am figuring that you are wondering what in the world I am talking about, well here it is Alaska Coupon Diva. The entry that made me realize that I needed to blog about this today is all about putting the store coupons directly on the store’s card (for those stores that provide a card that gives you some sort of insentive to shop with them) so that you do not have to remember to bring the paper coupons to the store with you. You can even get the P&G coupons put on your card as well. Go here and see for yourself and then click on the links that will allow you to do what I did. The post talks aboat the Carrs Club Card (Carrs is part of Safeway) but I found that I could also use my Fred Meyer card (Kroger) as well. If you are interested they are having a give away for a coupon organizer as well here the catch is that you have to enter by 9:00am Alaska Thursday morning.

Well that is what is working for me this week and I sure hope it works for you as well. If you would like to read what is working for others check out the links at We Are That Family‘s WFMW post.

Saving Money

In these tough economic times that we are all feeling in one fashion or another we all have to find little ways to make cut backs in our spending and save a little more as we can. I try to do what I can to safe. Most of the winter I try to keep our heat down, I just have to convince the family to not be playing with the thermastat, to save of the natural gas bill and keep the lights off when they are not needed. We have installed the energy saving light bulbs in as many fixtures as possible so that we use less energy there as well. We also have power strips for many of our devises to be plugged into so that when they are not being used they are utilizing no power.

I am hoping to have an energy audit performed on out home this spring or summer to find out more ways in which we could make our home work better for us to save money.

In the area of food, which I sometimes struggle the most with, I am trying to do better with meal planning by utilizing tips from The Hill Billy Housewife, Menu Plan Monday, utilizing coupons and sales, and buying in bulk those items that are good for that so that I can stockpile goods in the pantry. I am also working at havng an inventory of my  pantry, cubboards, freezer and frigerator so that I can know when I really do need to buy something and when I will only cause more waste if I do.

So I am interested in learning what you do to save money in these times of economic uncertainty. Please either respond in the comments section – I will not edit your length or anything like that so do not  worry about that – or let me know that you are posting something along these lines in your own blog. Please note that you do not have to have your own blog to comment here and that I do moderate the comments but only for stuff that is not suitable for a family friendly blog or that is offensive. If you post something that you do not want to be public, such as a child’s name or your actual location let me know and I will take that out.

Things to Do in 2009

Heather at Sprittibee is suggesting that those of us who need to make lists of what needs to be done and post them in our blogs for future reference. I am taking her up on this, not because she is offering a prize – she is, but because I am hoping that this will help me to not only get things accomplished this year but also be able to look back on the year come Nov. and Dec. as I write my year in review letter and actually see what I did do.

Homeschool Memoirs #19: Making A List ~ December 27, 2008

Life certainly has a way of getting in the way of doing some of the things that I love to do. Ever since The Homeschool Post began this writing assignment I have tried to do each week but back in November life went crazy with my beagle getting sick and I let things slide. So this memoir is particularly appropriate for me right now.

THEME

This week I want to set our minds on setting some goals for next year, whether personal, for the whole family, or for school.

I have made goals/resolutions for New Year’s but my execution of them has not been so good. Recently, just today in fact, I read at the Organized Home about goal setting. If you are like me and have great expectations for the new year but worry about making them actually happen that is a great site to visit to help in this area of our lives.

So this is what I would like to get done this year:
~ Save more and spend less.
~ Pay down our house mortgage so that we will own our house before the time is actually up.
~ Get rid of all other debt other than the mortgage.
~ Actually read the Bible in a year, the devotional that I am doing helps me to do this.
~ To be better prepared for my Sunday School class each week.
~ To be better prepared for my kid’s lessons each day and week.
~ To yell less at the kids and pray more for them.
~ To procrastinate less.
~ To eat a more healthy diet.
~ To be better at actually going to the gym for regular workouts.
~ To lose weight and minimize my chances at becoming a diabetic.

~ To actually complete hubby’s afghan that I began as a Christmas gift back in 1999.

There are more but I think that is pretty good for now. Hopefully I’ll over  to Donna Young’s site to print out and utilize her goal sheets to break the above down  into managable pieces.

If you would like to read what others are setting as goals for the coming year just click on the Memoirs image at the top of this post.

Menu Plan Monday – October 20, 2008

carview.php?tsp=I missed doing this last week due to illness and then getting hubby off to the airport to go back to work. For this week I’m struggling with what to cook. Please realize that each night and meal is subject to change.

Monday – Possibly pizza, not sure if I will make the dough or just buy pitas again and let everyone make their own.

Tuesday – chicken tacos – the kids have Spanish from 3:30 to 5 so I could pick the chickens up while they are in class along with the lettuce to go with this.

Wednesday – no worries as this is dinner at church night, someone else plans these meals.

Thursday – since we are home most of the day I am thinking that I could make pork chops, mashed potatoes and some sort of salad or veggie.

Friday – maybe burgers, either in or out, or sandwiches

Saturday – we may be going into town to meet some people so eating out is an option.

Sunday – we eat left overs or whatever happens to be around.

That is our week. If you want to see what others are planning on having check out the Organizing Junkie where many, think 200-300, people go to post their weekly menus.

Menu Plan Monday #1

carview.php?tsp=

I thought that it would be a good idea to begin doing this to help both my family budget and my sanity if I actually began to plan out my meals in advance instead of waiting until 2:00 in the afternoon to figure out what we are having for dinner. This should not be too difficult as at least one night a week I don’t have to cook at all and frequently there are other days when I don’t have to cook either. So lets just get this ball rolling here today.
