this doesn't answer the question posed, apparently: if we are supposed to emulate G-d, it should be in all His midos. who said i have to get so worked up to take vengeance; i'll do it in a calm and calculated way; and more than that, in Tehillim we say every day in psukei d'zimra that there is an inyan to strive for vengeance against those who have wronged us (the context, admittedly, is war, but the distinction needs an explanation).
