A Dash of Domestic
Updates, Broken limbs and Food Co-ops
JamieAnne ♦ August 12, 2012 ♦ 12 Comments
How have you been? Things have been crazy here in my household. The weather has been crazy hot (over 100 degrees F many days).
Hades called, they want their weather back.
I’m inclined to give it back, I’m not a fan of melting.
Since we have stolen Hades’ weather, my garden is mostly finished (Garden Gab the wilt-ey edition), the jalapeño peppers, tomatoes and watermelon plants are hanging on, but barely. It’s far too ugly to show a picture of.
My sweet daughter turned 13, began wearing make-up and then promptly broke her arm. Not that I believe make-up and broken limbs are related items, but it’s hard watching them grow up and it’s hard watching them get hurt.
Sadly, she has her mother’s grace and fell off the bed onto her hand. Scaphoid bone, fractured.
She’ll be in a cast for at least 12 weeks.
I want to tell you about a food co-op I’m taking part in. My friend and blogging goddess Lane wrote a post in July about Bountiful Baskets Food Co-op.
I have participated for about 4 weeks now. I am really enjoying it.
$15 for a basket of 1/2 fruit and 1/2 veggies. $25 for an all organic basket. You can buy bread, granola, extra fruit and veggie packs. (I bought 12 pounds of mixed plums for $12 a few weeks ago).
The produce is fresh, good-looking and (usually) cheaper than it would be at my local grocery store.
Check it out, see if your area has a co-op. Bountiful Baskets. The window buy-in to the co-op for the week is Monday (noon local time) to Tuesday evening. Check them out on Monday.
This week I got:
- 1 bunch of bananas
- 1 bunch of Tuscan kale
- 1 bunch of celery
- 4 green peppers
- 4 mangoes
- 3 large tomatoes
- 1 head of romaine lettuce
- 1 large bunch of broccoli
- 1 large bag of red cherries
- 1 large Melon
18 items for $15. Not too shabby.
So, what’s new with you?

An extended break

I’m sure you’ve noticed my absence. I’ve not really been in a blogging mood for over a month.
Burnout?
Summer?
Who knows.
I have decided to make my absence more permanent. I am not saying that I won’t be back, but I am going to take a break from the blog for the summer.
I hope you’ll still be here when I return.
I’ll understand if you are not.
XOXO
Food from my garden, this week in fail

With oodles and oodles of squash and zucchini from my garden, we’ve tried a few “new to us” recipes lately.
Some were good, some were not.
This one, from Paula Deen, was not a winner.
The flavors did not work well together, no one wanted a second helping, and we tossed the remainder.
I made 1 alteration, I added a few slices of zucchini, I can’t see how my small addition could change the flavor much.
Maybe I’m wrong though.
What cooking fails have you had lately?

Pictures from our drive.

We saw some beautiful bridges on our drive.
We saw some interesting sites like a vehicle transporting saddles on it’s roof.
We saw beautiful trees and rolling hills.

Traveling and Visiting

Happy 4th of July to all my fellow Americans!
On our driving trip to Alabama, we drove from Texas to Little Rock, Arkansas on day 1.
On our drive we stopped at a rest stop just inside of Arkansas and were surprised to see a girl my daughter went to elementary school with. Crazy.
We ate at Cracker Barrel (a must for road trips in our opinion).
I contacted Greg and Katherine of Rufus’ food and spirits guide to see how close to Little Rock they were.
Very close. We were invited for desserts. I tried unusual and tasty pizzas.
We viewed their lovely garden.
We petted their dogs.
It was a lot of fun and I can not thank Greg and Katherine enough for welcoming us into their beautiful home!

How to totally fail at returning from blogging vacation
JamieAnne ♦ July 2, 2012 ♦ 8 Comments
It’s already July!?!?!?!? Oops!
Yeah, it’s been over a week since we returned from Alabama. I haven’t blogged, tried any new recipes, taken any food or garden related pictures, or really been home much since we returned.
A blog at rest, tends to stay at rest.
So, in an effort to jump start my tardy return……..
How to use garden flowers and mint to make a pretty floral arrangement.
1. Snip pretty garden flowers of various colors.
2. Cut 3-6 mint sprigs to use in your arrangement.
3. Place in vase.
4. Fill vase with water.
5. Enjoy.
How have you been spending your time so far this summer?

Happy Father’s Day!

To all the Dads, Granddads, and Papas out there……
Happy Father’s Day!
Dads are such an important part of a child’s life. Having active, positive male role models is important for both boys and girls.
I’m happy and blessed to have a wonderful husband who is an excellent role model for our son and an all around awesomesauce guy.
Big hugs to all the Dads out there. Keep up the excellent work.
I won’t have any new posts during this week. I miss-managed my time and failed to line up any guest posters, so I will post links to last summer’s guest posts and last year’s vacation wrap up posts.
Have a wonderful week!
Father’s day last year I posted a sweet roll recipe.
