The 2025 Ace Community Survey is now open

Update: The 2025 Survey is now closed. Thanks for participating!

It’s that time of year again – we are now recruiting participants for the Ace Community Survey!

The Ace Community Survey is run by the Ace Community Survey Team–a community-based volunteer organization–in collaboration with Northwestern University.  It collects valuable information on the demographics and experiences of members in the ace community, including asexual, demisexual, gray-asexual, and related identities. Participants also have the option to make data available to external researchers, or only to our team.

The survey is open to anyone: ace, non-ace, or still questioning. As long as you are 15 years of age or older, we want to hear from you! We want to get a wide variety of responses from as many parts of the community as possible, so we encourage you to share this link with any other potentially interested individuals you know or any ace communities you participate in.

Call for new translators

The Ace Community Survey Team is currently looking for new volunteers to translate the survey! Our team designs and releases a survey every year, analyzes data, and produces reports. We seek to understand the diversity and well-being of ace communities, and educate activists and researchers with up-to-date information. We are currently recruiting volunteers for the translation team. We are especially looking for translators for Danish, Portuguese, Japanese, Russian, Chinese, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, and Spanish. What you’d do:

  • Work with our team to translate the survey questions and answers this year.
  • Proofreading.

If you wish to continue being a part of the team afterwards, you can also help with the corresponding reports made by the Ace Community Survey Team. All work is done remotely over the Internet, using Discord as our coordination platform. People from all over the world are welcome to apply! We would need you to be willing to spend some hours on this during this month (July). Time commitments are flexible and we usually work asynchronously, although work parties can be arranged if needed. We will provide further details upon joining, and will also hold trainings for the new volunteers. If you’re interested, please fill out this form by Wednesday, July 16th. It may take a few days for us to get back to you. If you’d like more information, you may contact us at acecommunitysurvey@gmail.com.

Living Conditions, Coming Out, and Communities (2021 Survey)

Main Findings

Happy Pride Month! To celebrate and recognize the A in LGBTQIA+, we are sharing our findings regarding demographics of ace respondents as well as their coming out experiences and participation in asexual and LGBTQ communities* from the 2021 Ace Community Survey. Some main findings are as follows:

  • Over two thirds of ace respondents indicated that they were between the ages of 13 and 24.
  • One in three aces had completed some form of higher education and two thirds were currently students.
  • Half of aces were unemployed. Nearly one in thirteen aces were working two or more jobs.
  • Three out of five aces lived with adults or guardians. Over a quarter lived with pets.
  • The median age of ace respondents when they first questioned their sexual identity was 16. The median age of ace respondents when they first identified with their sexual identity, first told someone about their sexual identity, and first participated in an asexual community was 18.
  • More ace respondents were out about their identity being asexual or on the asexual spectrum to their partners and LGBTQIA+ friends than to teachers and school staff, coworkers, and medical professionals.
  • Approximately a quarter of ace respondents had never participated in an asexual community.
  • Instagram became the most popular platform to participate in online asexual communities, as well as the most commonly used platform for both aro aces and non-aro aces to consume content from the aromantic-spectrum community.
  • Ace respondents who participated in an asexual community did so mostly online. The majority had never participated in offline asexual groups.
  • About half of the ace respondents said they had met someone offline or had current friends who identified as asexual or on the asexual spectrum.
  • About a third of the ace respondents had participated in LGBTQ communities, and most of those who participated characterized their experience in both online and offline LGBTQ communities as positive or mostly positive.

The 2021 survey was open between October 25 and December 4, 2021 and received a total of 12,226 responses. For information regarding our methodology and limitations, please see the 2021 Ace Community Survey Summary Report.

*In the survey, LGBTQ communities were defined as online and offline spaces dedicated primarily to people under the LGBTQ umbrella, excluding ace- or aro-specific spaces.

Sexual Violence & Childhood Sexual Abuse in the Ace Community (2021 Survey)

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) – a month to raise awareness about sexual assault and educate communities about preventing it. In solidarity, we are posting the following findings on sexual violence and childhood sexual abuse in the ace community from the 2021 survey.*

*The 2021 survey was released on October 25, 2021, and closed on December 4, 2021. It received a total of 12,226 responses, with 11,547 respondents indicating that they were ace. For information regarding our methodology and limitations, please see the 2021 Ace Community Survey Summary Report.

If you need support, please consult the international directory of sexual violence resources and additional resources.

Main Findings

The 2021 Ace Community Survey asked a number of questions regarding sexual violence and childhood sexual abuse. Some main findings were as follows:

  • Fewer ace respondents reported sexual violence than non-ace respondents and respondents who were unsure if they are ace.**
  • Fewer ace respondents reported sexual violence in the 2021 survey than in the 2020 survey.
  • Nonbinary, transgender, and intersex ace respondents reported more sexual violence than ace respondents who were binary, not transgender, or not intersex.
  • Fewer ace respondents reported child sexual abuse than non-ace respondents and respondents who were unsure if they are ace.**

**Please note that our samples of non-ace respondents and respondents who were unsure if they are ace are small, and not representative of the non-ace people and people who are unsure if they are ace.

Further details are below.
