The AER’s vocation is: to promote regional democracy and subsidiarity; to enhance the political role of the regions of Europe; to support the regions in the process of European enlargement and globalisation; and, to develop interregional cooperation at the service of citizens.
Association of European Border Regions
The AEBR is acting for the benefit of all European border and cross-border regions. One of their main aims is to exchange know-how and information in order to formulate and co-ordinate common interests on the basis of the various cross-border problems and opportunities, and to offer adequate solutions.
Border Poetics Project
University of Tromso, Norway. This project sets out to develop theoretical and practical strategies for examining the function of narrative and symbolic forms of representation in the intersection between territorial borders and aesthetic works.
Central European Service for Cross-Border Initiatives, CESCI
The Central European Service for Cross-border Initiatives (CESCI) is a Budapest based think-tank of cross-border issues. It was established in 2009 following the model of the French Mission Opérationnelle Transfrontalière (MOT). CESCI provides professional support to the stakeholders involved in territorial cooperation in Hungary and in Central Europe. By involving experts from neighbouring countries our association aims at strengthening the need and raising the spirit of cooperation and in this way facilitating mutual understanding and tolerance between the nations of the Danube region. CESCI is an open association the members of which are local and regional municipalities, natural persons and professional bodies.
Centre for Cross Border Studies
Armagh, Ireland. The Centre for Crossborder Studies researches and develops cooperation across the Irish border in education, training, health, business, public administration, communications, agriculture and the environment, and acts as secretariat for a number of cross-border educational organizations.
Committee of the Regions
The CoR is the political assembly that provides local and regional authorities with a voice at the heart of the European Union.
Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions of Europe
The CPMR brings together more than 150 regions. They work together to ensure that EU institutions and national governments take account of their common interests, and cooperate on practical projects in order to enhance their assets.
Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of Europe
The Congress is an institution of the Council of Europe It offers an ideal forum for dialogue where representatives of local and regional authorities discuss common problems, compare notes about their experiences and then put their points of view to the national governments.

The COE seeks to develop throughout Europe common and democratic principles based on the European Convention on Human Rights and other reference texts on the protection of individuals.
Council of European Municipalities and Regions
The CEMR is the largest organisation of local and regional government in Europe. It works to promote a united Europe that is based on local and regional self government and democracy.

Provides a platform for its member cities to share knowledge and ideas, to exchange experiences, to analyse common problems and develop innovative solutions, through a wide range of Forums, Working Groups, Projects, activities and events. Committed to working towards a common vision of a sustainable future in which all citizens can enjoy a good quality of life.
The European Borders Group
University of Surrey, UK. The European Borders Group exists to investigate the impact of boundaries, in various senses: as much of political and economic action as of culture/identity; as much figurative as literal; as much points of contact as points of differentiation or conflict.
European Commission
The EC was created to represent the European interest common to all Member States of the Union. So that it can play its role as guardian of the Treaties and defender of the general interest, the Commission has been given a right of initiative in the legislative process, proposing the legislation on which the European Parliament and the Council decide. The Commission is also responsible for implementing common policies; it administers the budget and manages the Union’s programmes.
European Convention
The European Convention completed its work on 10 July 2003, by submitting a draft treaty establishing a constitution for Europe. Its site, the contents of which are dated 31 July 2003, will remain open for consultation.
European Economic and Social Committee
The EESC is a bridge between Europe and organised civil society, bridging the gap between ‘Europe’ and the ‘Europeans’ and thus acting as a lever for progress.
European Parliament
The EP is the Community institution that represents the peoples of the Member States of the European Union. It is the only directly-elected body of the EU. It plays an active role in drafting legislation which has an impact on the daily lives of its citizens, and also has joint power with the Council over the annual budget of the European Union.
European Union
The EU is a unique economic and political partnership between 27 democratic European countries. Its aim is peace, prosperity and freedom for its 495 million citizens – in a fairer, safer world. Its four main roles are to propose legislation to Parliament and the Council, to administer and implement Community policies, to enforce Community law (jointly with the Court of Justice) and to negotiate international agreements, mainly those relating to trade and cooperation.
Nijmegen Centre for Border Research
Radboud University, Netherlands. The NCBR focuses on border-related themes of globalisation, transnationalism and Europeanisation. The Centre is also actively involved in encouraging the academic exploration of borders in the broadest sense through the co-editorship of Henk van Houtum and Martin van der Velde of the Journal of Borderlands Studies (JBS).
Peipsi Center for Transboundary Cooperation
Tartu, Estonia. The Peipsi CTC is an international non-profit institute, which works to promote balanced development of border areas, especially in Lake Peipsi/Chudskoe region.
