IFTAS is a non-profit initiative advancing independent, sovereign social networks, and supporting the people who uphold trust, safety, and inclusion on these decentralised platforms.
We provide guidance to organisations and institutions engaging with the open social web, and we support volunteer moderators, service providers, and communities operating across the diverse and evolving landscape of federated and independent online networks.
As our digital spaces become increasingly decentralised, the responsibility for trust and safety has shifted from large corporations to individuals and small teams. These community-led efforts are vital for protecting users, upholding human rights, and ensuring online spaces remain open and respectful.
IFTAS provides technical tools, training, and policy resources to help manage regulatory compliance, and trust and safety effectively and fairly. We publish public guidance, best practice, and analysis to support resilient systems.
We advocate for human rights, particularly in areas such as online safety regulation, platform accountability, and protection against harassment. We foreground the needs and voices of marginalised communities, and prioritise responses that reduce harm while protecting civil liberties, freedom of expression, and access to information.
We promote equitable processes that consider context, intent, and impact in all trust and safety decisions. Our role is to support, not control. We equip communities with the tools they need to govern themselves. We work to ensure all users, especially those from marginalised backgrounds, can participate in online life free from abuse and harm.
IFTAS is a collaborative effort led by Jaz-Michael King, made possible by volunteers, contributors, developers, researchers, and trust and safety professionals from around the world. We operate independently, without influence from commercial platforms, and are funded through grants and donations from aligned organisations and people like you.
We welcome input, feedback, and collaboration from anyone invested in the future of safe, decentralised online communities. Whether you’re a service provider, researcher, technologist, or a citizen using the Internet, there is a place for you in our work.
