“Creativity is more important than knowledge.”
Albert Einstein
“Imagination may be the hardest work of the human mind, and perhaps the most Godlike. It’s the closest we get to creation out of nothing.”
John Piper
I’m not sure how a conversation between John Piper and Albert Einstein would go. Maybe old Steiny would become an Evangelical Christian who desires God. Maybe old Johnny would concede that reality is bigger and weirder than even (his) theology can parse out.
If you add C.S. Lewis into the conversation he might synthesize their ideas and churn out something like this:
Imagination can conceive a reality more real than observable science.
We live in a strange time in world history–the explosion of the scientific method and the elevation of research and logic. These are good for things like iPhones and rockets to Mars. But when attempting to get at the core of reality, they’re as good to us as a plastic spoon digging to China. A spoon is great, but we’ll never get to China that way.
If it’s reality and truth and meaning we’re after, we’re going to need a lot more serious and playful imagination.
