Okay, so I just had to go find the etymology:
French, alteration of toquassen, from Old French touque-sain, from Old Provençal tocasenh : tocar, to strike (from Vulgar Latin *toccre) + senh, bell (from Late Latin signum, from Latin, signal; see sign).
