Schellman’s ISO Certification Methodology
The ISO certification process follows a three-year certification cycle:
- Initial Certification Audit (Year 1) A full audit broken into two stages (which are typically 1-3 months apart) to first assess the design of the management system, and then operating effectiveness of the management system, to verify that the management systems meet all ISO requirements. Depending on the standard, Stage 2 may also include assessing operating effectiveness of a set of Annex controls. If successful, the company is then awarded certification.
- Surveillance Audit (Years 2 & 3) Annual audits to ensure the management system is being maintained, followed, and continuously improved. These are less extensive than the initial audit and may involve audit sampling.
- Recertification Audit (End of Year 3) A full audit conducted to renew the certification for another three-year cycle, similar to the initial certification audit, but not broken down into two stages.

What to expect for your ISO project
Our team of experts can provide any of the following to complete your ISO Certification:
- Readiness Assessment ISO readiness assessments are performed to determine an organization's readiness to undergo ISO certification. The readiness assessment includes an evaluation of the organization's management system in relation to the management system requirements of the applicable standard.
- Certification Assessment This results in an accredited ISO certificate. The certification assessment covers a three-year term as the certificate, once issued, is valid for a three year period prior to requiring recertification.
- Transfer Assessment Organizations are allowed to transfer their existing ISO certificate from one certification body to another at any time of the certification lifecycle. Schellman can perform a certification transfer for an organization so that the certificate is then issued by Schellman.
