So I am looking at downloading the free trial to see if roborealm will help my project to work better. After receiving the code, I tried to open the 32 and 64 link multiple times but the tab would automatically close without downloading the file. Finally, it said that I had tried to open link too many times and to contact @roborealm.com. So, I'm here and I was wondering if there was any solution to this problem. Thanks!
RR community used to be very vibrant but I noticed very few community contribution these days. This should be a matter of concern for RR community. Here I am posting a RR program to segment different plant type to classify. Surprisingly, I notice python module process much faster than jscript module. I am wondering if anyone help me with cscript module to speed up process so that I can use it in real time situation. All thoughts are welcome. Thanks in Advance

Yes, the Trial and Personal versions of RoboRealm are limited to 2048x2048 images, and the aspect ration will be maintained. The commercial version allows up to 64,000. 2048 is a very large image dimension for typical machine vision applications - will reduce processing speed with little improvement in results.

Hi, I am having, what I think is an issue, with resolution selection. I have the personal version of the software, and it indicates a maximum resolution of 2048x2048. Does that mean that no pixel direction can be larger than 2048, or that the total pixel count cannot exceed 2048x2048? I would like to use 2320x1744, which is a lower total pixels than 2048x2048, yet the software force crops my image when I select 2320x1744. Is there a way around the cropping here, or is it a hard 2048 single side max?

From the FAQ (https://www.roborealm.com/FAQ.php)

How do I move a RoboRealm license?
UnInstall RoboRealm on the old machine while connected to the Internet. Then download the latest version using your original download link (or use a previously downloade3d setup file) and install on the new machine. When you un-install RoboRealm on machines that have an Internet connection this decreases the registration count and allows you to install the license on other machines. If you have accidentally deleted the old machine prior to un-installing RoboRealm just contact us (contact@roborealm.com) and let us know which machine you wish to have the licensed removed from and we can help you out.

For the first question, the RoboRealm pipeline is driven by the image capture source. For your application, you can force a regular refresh with:

Options->Other (you may need to click the right arrow to reveal that tab.
Change the Min Processing FPS to something like 30 fps. That is the speed of a typical camera.

You can adjust that up or down as needed. If you make it too fast, the pipeline will not be able to process any modules before restarting.

For the second question, we are not quite clear what the issue is. Can you give us some more info, or attach a ,robo file? Thanks.

Hello,

I've got aproblem with variable refresh.
I'm setting variable named LINE_SCAN through API to 1 or 0.
But it only works if I add Timer module. Without Timer the variable is not refreshing.
But the timer module slows down the process and I can't do calculation in required time.
What is the issue?

Second problem I have with LINE SCANNER module. I setup to maximum pictures to 6 but even when 6 pictures are delivered the scanner doesn't stop it still wait for another picture. David,

Roborealm can use multiple processors in a single pipeline (in order to speed up processing a single image frame) or simply using the underlying OS to allocate CPU across multiple running instances of Roborealm.

In your case it sounds like you need multiple instances with each instance connecting to one or more cameras. Just be sure to check the Options button->Application tab->[x] Allow Multiple Running Instances to ensure that each time you click on the Roborealm.exe application it will launch a new instance. Or just hold down the ALT key when you launch the application and that will allow a new instance. The default it to only run one instance so either of those options are needed to work around that.

Note, each instance will also statup with its last configured robo file assuming the Options button->Start tab->(x) Load Last Program is set. Or you can specify the program to load in that same dialog view. Each instance will remember its own configuration so if you run 5 instances ... close all 5 and reopen 5 they will load in the settings they had before.

We've not run any specific tests around using AMD or Intel CPUs as to which is better. Likewise, we've not had anyone comment on the difference between those two in terms of speed either. It will also largely depend on what modules you are using as to which CPU might be better.

STeven.
Roland,

We did some testing and while it is possible to get the pipeline up to 200fps its not very stable at that rate since if the PC decides to do something else (like update Windows) that rate will drop drastically and quickly. Its just not quite the right way to get a high speed response rate to serial data.

Instead, you probably want to use an external VBScript that can run in a tight loop or respond to serial interrupts without needing to release control back to a RR processing pipeline. Its really the best way to create a device listener esp. if you need it to be very reactive. While the module in RR is capable of such things its really only meant as a slower interface to send data created from a camera feed. For general purpose systems, its probably best to write more focused scripts.

For example, feeding

"Write a VB Script command line program that listens to a serial port for data and prints the received data."

into ChatGPT produces something you might use to help you get started:

' Create a serial port object
Set serialPort = CreateObject("MSCommLib.MSComm")

' Set serial port properties
serialPort.CommPort = 1
serialPort.Settings = "9600,N,8,1"
serialPort.InputMode = 0 ' Text mode
serialPort.Handshaking = 0 ' None
serialPort.RThreshold = 1 ' Set the number of characters to trigger the OnComm event

' Open the serial port
serialPort.PortOpen = True

' Define the OnComm event handler
Sub serialPort_OnComm
Dim receivedData
receivedData = serialPort.Input ' Read the received data

' Process the received data here
WScript.Echo "Received data: " & receivedData
End Sub

' Set the OnComm event handler
serialPort.OnComm = GetRef("serialPort_OnComm")

' Wait for input
WScript.StdIn.ReadLine

' Close the serial port
serialPort.PortOpen = False
Hi STeven

I've tried to ask this before, but still don't understand the answer.............

I am trying to log and process data from the serial port.

So no matter what I do, I can only get the FPS up to about 60.
So I presume the max rate that data can be processed at, is the FPS, being 60. I presume this is the pipeling speed too?
Is this determined by the screen update rate?

Why can't RR run at a FPS of say 1000. Surely very easily achieved on a modern PC.
So I want to retrieve a string, process the result in VB, and store a result.
There is the displayed values, and a graph on the GUI, but these only need to be updated at say 30FPS, much like a multimeter, for the operators benefit

While data is presumably buffered from the serial (or USB) port, the basic question is; why can't the pipeline speed be much, much faster, and independent of the display FPS?
So this would allow RR to act as a 'proper'? PLC, while having all the benefits of a graphical display. In this application, there is no camera, no image processing.

The actual application is 'Torque plus angle' A strain gauge is read and the result needs to be manipulated and stored at discrete rotary encoder divisions. The incoming data has a rate of approximately 100 SPS, but RR should operate at an order of magnitude faster in order to not see glitches in the graph, ie be more 'real time'

Regards
Roland

Hi,

It seems like the IF Statement is working correctly since the right of the pipeline is not showing any timing numbers for that section 1. So it appears that it is not being called at least when you took that screenshot.

One possibility is that the variables are NOT removed even if you do not call that section of code any more. The variable will stay in memory until either the program exits, gets over written by a new value or deleted when you remove a module that generates variables. In your case, because DEBUG_VAR is a custom variable they will remain.

I would also use

int i = getVariable("DEBUG_VAR2")

as i is an integer.

But I think your real issue is with

PushButton("Object Recognition", 0, "Train")

The issue is which Object Recognition module are you referring to? Since you have two and they are the same name the system will ALWAYS chose the first once since you specified a count of 0. This happens EVEN when the first module is not being executed since you are accessing the module via the User Interface ... which is not really the recommended way to do this.

So to fix your problem use

PushButton("Object Recognition", 2, "Train")

for your second CScript. This will tell the system that you mean the second OR module.

BUT did you see the "monitor folder" checkbox functionality? If you check that checkbox when you specify the folder to train from within the OR module, it will retrain automatically when new files are added or deleted from that folder. Its MUCH simpler and more efficient to use than causing buttons to be pushed.

STeven.

Detecting "empty" page [2]
Kresimir,

It will largely depend on what it looks like when there is a minimal amount of text on the page. For example, you can use the Color_Statistics module which will run in about 40ms and generate a bunch of variables about the image. One could just use MIN_INTENSITY and as long as that is higher than say 30 that could indicate an empty page. But even one black pixel would cause that to be close to zero. So maybe a better indicator is to allow some black (i.e. noise) on the page.

So instead I may use NORMALIZED_SUM_G and check if that value is < 0.85 to at least ensure there is more than just noise pixels on the page but you will have to test a bit to see what value works best for you.

Keep in mind that a pure blank page is all white at an intensity of 255 while and all black page is 0.

STeven.

I select the camera from the options, and it takes the first immediate frame, but then it won't update as a live video and not take footage of the live frames. How am I able to fix this? Also the help button does a loading thing on command but never eventually loads.

Hope you reply back to us soon, Francis fISH
VBscript module [4]
Christian,

Thanks for your robofile. Ignore my earlier post as you are already using the Camera module twice which will trigger the pipeline to run regardless.

I added a Watch module and checked that the SCRIPT_COUNT is indeed incrementing after the End_Split_Image module so that does seem like it is working.

Perhaps your pipeline is running very slow? Check the little gray numbers on the right side of the pipeline to see if there is a module that has a much larger number than the other modules. I suspect that the Object Recognition module is most likely the cause to be slowing down the pipeline so much that it appears not to be running.

Can you also double check the FPS number seen at the bottom of the RR GUI? What rate are you getting? Again, this can confirm that something is very slow in the pipeline.

If the Object Recognition is the cause, can you post a couple sample images so we can better understand the issue? Often, decreasing the size of the template training images can really help to speed up the match with no reduction in accuracy.

STeven.
VBscript module [2]
Christian,

What is most likely happening is that you don't have a camera running or anything in the pipeline that is "running" the pipeline (i.e polling for images, data, etc.). Thus the pipeline is actually NO running until you either click on a module, bring up the interface, etc. which is why it appears that you need the interface open (you do NOT) in order to have that variable count.

You can solve this by either pressing the camera button or add the joystick module or add the Timer module ... all of these will cause the pipeline to actually run continuously.

If you can attach your robofile to this post we can verify if this is indeed the case.

STeven.
RoboRealm resolution [2]
Yes, it appears that your camera is wanting to use the mjpg image format when sending the higher resolution image (which makes sense since its requires more data). The lower resolution format is probably one that we support natively which is why it is ok with that.

In order to correct this error you need to download the "mjpg" or "moving jpeg" decoder driver. You can do so using

https://www.roborealm.com/downloads/K-Lite_Codec_Pack_1235_Full.exe

and if that doesn't work you can also try

https://www.roborealm.com/downloads/ffdshow_rev4533_20140929_clsid.exe

Note, these may only install the 32 bit drivers so you may want to switch to the 32 bit of RR.

If you are using the 64 bit, you may have to go to the actual site (these links are old copies) to download the 64 bit version of these drivers. See

https://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout/

Normally these drivers are available natively in Windows but it may be that you have a different version of Windows where these drivers were not installed.

STeven.
Problems with Calculate_Distance and If_Statement [2]
BE,

It is something simple once you realize that the AREA variable is actually an array of areas even if there is only one blob that you are checking. In this case you need to specify the index as in

if area:0 < 4000 then ....

which will fix your particular issue.

Its a subtle point and one that tripped us up a bit too. Just add a ':' and the number next to an array variable to specify a particular value within that array. Note, we use [] to evaluate expressions so something like AREA[0] or AREA(0) does NOT work.

If you check the AREA variable in the Watch_Variables module and scroll to the right you can see the types of all variables. In your case AREA is indeed an array.

Sorry for the confusion!

STeven.
Problems with Calculate_Distance and If_Statement
I am surprised that I'm having difficulty with what seem to be very simple modules. The problems are with the Calculate_Distance and If_Statement.

In the attached robofiles, Calculate_Distance and the If_Statement work as expected in test_dist1.rbo, but do not work as expected in spectra_101.rbo.

In test_dist1.rbo, you click around the image window, and if you draw a long arrow, the screen text says "long", if you draw a short arrow, the screen text says "short". Great, simple, just as expected. The length of the arrow is determined by Calculate_Distance, and the test for long vs. short is done with the If_Statement.

In spectra_101.rbo, I attempt to find the area and centroid of a white rectangular blob (those work fine), then I calculate the centroid's deviation from an expected position (does not work) and check that the blob area meets a minimum criteria (does not work). The deviation always comes back 133.124 regardless of the blob centroid, and the area test fails even though, for example, an area of 5682 is greater than 4000.

I hope I'm not overlooking something simple.

test_dist1.robo

Roland,

The pipeline expects something in it to trigger a run .. i.e. like a camera capture trigger or a serial input, etc. If there isn't such a module, the pipeline just doesn't run.

The workaround is to set the Min Processing Fps in the Options button->Other Tab->Min Processing FPS to at least 1 ( or some small non-zero value). Fonts [2]
Roland,

This was added just to help some folks see the RR interface text a bit better but did not change the font style used in modules like Display_Text.

We can however add in a dropdown in something like Display_Text that would allow for any system font to be used. Because system fonts are too slow to render on images that can run faster than 30fps we would only recommend using a set font style that can be cached in the module for the next run as apposed to changing the font each time.

If just having more flexibility in choosing a different font style from that Display_Text dropdown is desired let us know and we can add something.

STeven.

Higher FPS [2]
Roland,

Typically when we need something to process at a much faster rate a module will run independently of the pipeline to process incoming data (for example the serial module does this) instead of requiring the pipeline to run at the needed polling speed.

So modules that do this will buffer the data to be processed once the pipeline does execute the module.

While it is possible to get 90FPS this will really depend on your system configuration, USB (or ethernet) speed and which modules you have running.

Perhaps you can help us understand the need for this higher frequency?

STeven.
RoboRealm TestDll [2]
Christian,

If that file is not located where RoboRealm is installed you probably are using the personal version which does NOT have the ability to be controlled via the mentioned DLL. This functionality is also often called Faceless mode (ie. no interface is visible) and is only provided to commercial customers due to the advanced integration requirements. Note that you are also then missing the RoboRealm.dll file which would be required to run in faceless mode.

Alternatively, have you looked at both the API and/or Plugin interfaces? I think you may actually find those to be what you are looking to do as the faceless mode is WAY more complicated and is meant to incorporate RoboRealm at a very low level. The API and/or Plugins offer a better interface to a running RR app.

See those at

https://www.roborealm.com/help/API.php

or to better understand what you may or may not need:

https://www.roborealm.com/help/Integration.php

STeven.

displaying a number
Hi Steven

I want to display a number variable, huge, on the screen, pretty much like a voltmeter.

The problem is that the display jumps all the time.
A few things I've tried;

Fixing the trailing digits
V_disp = Round(V_actual,3)
but if the last digit is 0 then it does not show

So I added;
V_actual = V_actual +.001111
which will ensure there is always a trailing digit > 0
But because of the font and being centre justified, it still jumps too much.

Then I split the number into separate strings with mid(V_actual,n,1) and displayed each one separately, but then the decimal place moves as the number increases. Negative numbers also mess up the justification.

Is there a way to display a value where the decimal point would stay fixed on the screen, irrespective of the number of leading or trailing digits, or polarity? Amar,

sorry, we didn't see your XML post since it was so large it failed to alert us of your post. I had expected you to add it as an attachment. I've since deleted that post (but kept the XML) to avoid the long scrolling needed for this particular thread.

It seems that the XML configuration doesn't include the supported sizes that the camera likes (a bit unfortunate). This is why 500x500 probably doesn't work (although why an error is not reported is another question) so as you found out you will need to only test expected resolutions. For the Basler ACA2440-20GC I would try 2448 x 2048 as the max resolution and then crop it (using the crop module) to 2040 x 2040 if you need that exact image size. If you stick with the powers of 2 those might be other good resolutions like 640x480, 1024x768, 2048x1536, etc. that work.

Mainly, if you see a black screen, then you know the camera doesn't support that resolution.

STeven.

3 camera output on single screen [2]
Amardeep,

There are several ways to accomplish this. The easiest is to use the Mosaic module which will allow you to select many cameras and have them all in a single image like a security camera would.

https://www.roborealm.com/help/Mosaic.php

Alternatively, you can also use the Canvas module to expand the current image and then the Display_Image module to draw images into an expanded space. This is a bit more tedious but also allows for more complicated arrangement than the Mosaic module.

If you have a more specific arrangement that you need, please post it here.

STeven.

Basler USB3 camera setup [2]
You have two options:

DirectX - check if you can download the DirectX (DirectInput) drivers for the camera that supports USB3 on the Basler website. Once these drivers are installed it will allow the camera to be accessible by most windows applications that have a DirectInput interface (including RR). You should then be able to press the Camera button in the main RR interface and select your Basler camera using the Options tab / Video tab / Camera dropdown. Note, in many early implementations these drivers can be a bit unstable so be weary when using this interface.

A second option is to use the Genicam module.

https://www.roborealm.com/help/GenICam.php

which will require downloading the genicam drivers (see documentation page for links). This module utilizes the genicam protocol to communicate directly with the camera which can result in a quicker interface than the directX interface above (less layers to communicate through). However, not all cameras support all aspects of the genicam interface so its best to test this interface with the Genicam module before assuming the interface is stable and works.

Please post here if you run into issues with either of these solutions.

STeven.
X Position
Hello,

I have a project where I am identifying objects on a conveyor based on size and geometry. I have a pick and place down line where I will pick the object off using a stepper drive linear actuator and vacuum suction cup.

I can get the x-y coordinates in RR but I need to send these values to a Allen Bradley Micrologix PLC.

I looked into the Socket function but it seems to complicated. Is there a easier way to send the two values x,y coordinates from a blob to the PLC ? I have both Ethernet and Comm port available. I could not find any DDE exchange info in RR. That would most likely work for us as well by sending the values to excel then DDE them to the PLC.

Thanks
Distributor Client and Server do not maintain connection
I saw a couple of posts that described having problems with the distributor and client when using the "Request Variables" option by itself. The connection would connect and disconnect almost between every transfer. Code: (1)
I found that the problem was that I had my Distributor Client module was after a Timer module.
Moving the Timer to the end mostly solved this problem. I still had some disconnections, but not nearly as many.

You need more whitespace around those barcodes. Those are very unrealistic barcodes ... i.e. when viewing barcodes in reality they are rarely as clean as the digital copies you included. But if that's what your project requires, just add some whitespace around the codes. See attached.

STeven.
Velleman 8055 [2]
Just for others that might have had the same issue ... any DLL that RR uses needs to be in the same bit depth as the RR version you are running. I.e. if you are running the 32bit version of RR then you can ONLY use 32 bit DLLs. If you are running the 64 bit version of RR, then you can only use 64 bit DLLs. The bit size needs to be the same ... this isn't something that RR restricts but is not possible to mix due to the operating system.

It is also possible that the newer 64 bit DLLs may have changed since the RR module was added. We do not receive any updates from 3rd party companies when they update/modify/change their integration process which is why often newer DLLs just don't work.

Thanks,
STeven.
programmatically change variables within a module? [2]
Edi, I'm not sure what you mean as one can change variable values using any of the scripting modules or using the Set_Variable module. Or do you mean "rename" a variable? If that's the case use the Set_Variable module to set a new variable with the old variable's value. This is useful if there is a module that creates a variable that you want to save and use the module a second time (which would overwrite the value of the variable again). So it would be like

Module
Set_Variable
Module

STeven.
Max Value in a array [2]
Edi,

The two fields for the sort have to do with working in arrays that have multiple values. For example if you have an array of X and Y values the record size is 2 and the field offset would be 1 if you wanted to sort on X and 2 if you wanted to sort on Y. Since you can also have 3 or 4 or N numbers in an array that are associated like a record, that's the reason for those fields.

In your case, a record size and offset of both 1 will work. It is NOT the size of the array. The module knows the length/size of the array from accessing that within RR.

Alternatively, you can also find the max value by using a small VBScript that should execute quite quickly. Something like

'////////////

line = GetArrayVariable("Line_Profile_Values")
max = 0
if isArray(line) then
for i = 0 to ubound(line)
if line(i) > max then max = line(i)
next
end if

write "The max is " & max

'///////////////

running from within a VBScript module.

STeven.
How to count objects crossing a line(tripwire)
Hi Steven,

I have white buttons moving on a conveyor. Im using a webcam to get the video stream, I processed the image, set blob size, and used blob count to get the count of the buttons. But once the buttons move out of the frame the count goes down. What i want is, draw a line like a trip wire, when a button crosses the line, the count should increase. If 10 buttons crosses the line, the count should show 10 even after they are out of frame.

Can you include the original image? It seems that the text is a bit squashed which will interfere with good recognition (i.e. perhaps stretching the text prior to thresholding might help).

It is possible to add fonts to the OCR folder but that has to be done very carefully.
