How Rapyd’s payment applications can be leveraged to build a customised in-person checkout experience
As commerce continues to evolve, merchants are seeking flexible, reliable, and scalable methods to accept payments. Not only online, but also in person. At Raypd, we’ve expanded our global payments capabilities to the physical point of sale through an integration with PAX’s payment terminals and the development of a complementary app ecosystem. The apps lie at the core of Rapyd’s in-person payments suite, and are designed to give merchants and partners the tools they need to build a tailored in-person checkout experience that connects with their business systems and streamlines operations.
The Rapyd PAX App Ecosystem
Rapyd has five apps listed in the PAX app store that work to power in-person payments:
App Name | Description | Key functionalities |
Rapyd Core | Central backend app that connects PAX terminals to Rapyd’s global infrastructure and data exchange. |
|
Rapyd Pay | Frontend app for in-person payments acceptance. |
|
Rapyd Onboarding | Temporary installer app that provisions the required Rapyd apps on PAX devices per merchant. |
|
CloudLink | Integration app for ECR/POS systems to connect with Rapyd PAX terminals via the cloud. |
|
LocalLink | Integration app for ECR/POS systems to connect with Rapyd PAX terminals via local networks. |
|
Bundling of the Rapyd Apps
The Rapyd PAX ecosystem is designed to be modular, but requires certain combinations of apps to function:
- Rapyd Onboarding is optional, but simplifies setup by automatically downloading the necessary apps per merchant.
- Rapyd Core is always required. It powers all payment functionalities behind the scenes and connects to Rapyd’s authorisation systems.
- On top of Core, merchants can choose one of the following:
- Rapyd Pay is an out-of-the-box solution that enables merchants to start transacting in person with no development overhead.
- CloudLink is an integrated solution that allows communication with PAX payment terminals over the cloud.
- LocalLink is an integrated solution that enables communication with PAX payment terminals over local networks (USB, Bluetooth, Local Ethernet, LAN, WiFi).
- Alternatively, a custom frontend app can be built on top of the Rapyd Core and integrated with Rapyd’s PAX terminals.
This flexible infrastructure enables merchants to access the core infrastructure for payments, while choosing the integration method that best fits their business and operational complexity.
Enabling Omnichannel Scenarios with Rapyd
Merchants can no longer think of in-store payments and online transactions as separate systems. Instead, they need a unified strategy that connects every point of interaction (across online and offline channels) into one experience. By combining Rapyd Core with PAX terminals and Rapyd’s Global Payment Network, merchants can bridge the gap between the digital and physical worlds. The same infrastructure that powers a tap on a payment terminal can also be used to power an online checkout, mobile order, or recurring subscription.
Rapyd enables a range of omnichannel scenarios with its PAX terminals and complementary app suite:
Buy In-Store, Return Online | In-Store Purchasing via Mobile App | Subscription Services Coming soon |
|
Scenario | Goods are purchased at a physical store but returned online. | Goods are purchased at a physical store but returned online. | A customer buys a membership in-person using a payment terminal to pay for his first month’s subscription. |
Payment Flow | Customers pay in-store using a credit card. Later, they initiate a return via the merchant’s online portal. The refund is processed directly to the original payment method. | Payment is completed through the app using stored payment information or digital wallets. | Card data is securely stored on file, and digital billing is automatically triggered every month. |
Delivering Value for Partners and Merchants
Rapyd’s PAX ecosystem is designed to serve two key audiences: Rapyd Partners (i.e., payfacs, ISOs and ISVs) who deliver payment solutions to their clients and merchants who rely on these solutions to run their businesses.
