Oh I agree entirely. :-)
My only point was that avoiding DESTROY has eliminated a whole class of 
problems for me, and since my code tends to be more complex than CPAN 
code, not using DESTROY myself has meant that I haven't had to face this 
problem ($@, $!, $? being set in DESTROY) for at least a year or two. :-)
I'm sure, though, the moment somebody DOES use a CPAN module that uses 
DESTROY, and it happens to touch $@, $!, or $?, without restoring it 
before exit, and there code starts exhibiting wierd behaviour (say, they 
exit with 0, but the exit value changes to 255, and they can't explain 
why?), they have a good chance of giving up on the problem, because 
figuring out the cause is genuinely difficult unless you know where to 
start looking...
