Supporting a Secure and Trustworthy Internet

People need an Internet they can trust. We’re fighting to make that happen.
Every minute of every hour, people connect with one another online, sharing information, ideas, and dreams.
Working with our global community, we help make the Internet a trustworthy place. Together, we advocate to keep the Internet secure and functioning and educate people to make safer choices online.
How We’re Rebuilding Trust in the Internet
We make sure policy and technology developments support what the Internet needs to remain a global resource for everyone.
Extending Encryption
In order to help people build trust in the Internet, they need to be able to feel safe on the Internet. Encryption helps with this by keeping our actions online secure. We promote the benefits of encryption to policymakers to prevent legislation that weakens this critical resource.
Influencing Internet Law
Courts frequently decide on legal questions, and interpret statutes and regulations that affect the functioning of the Internet. We share our views with the courts to ensure that any laws that are passed support the open, globally connected, secure, and trustworthy Internet.
Promoting and defending a multistakeholder Internet governance model
We work to remove barriers to standards adoption and open doors for everyone to have their say regarding how Internet policies and standards are developed.
Protecting an Open Internet
Whether intended or not, public policies and commercial decisions can threaten the very principles that made the Internet so successful and make it less secure. We work to advocate for policies that protect the Internet—not weaken it.
Sharing the Latest Security Knowledge
Through the collaborative sharing of leading research on systems security, the Network and Distributed System Security (NDSS) Symposium helps the Internet community make the Internet more secure.
Supporting Online Trust and Safety
We work to help newly connected Internet users develop trust and safety skills so they can have a safer online experience.
Steps We’ve Taken Toward a More Trustworthy Internet
Promoting Encryption for a More Secure Internet
The more people who use end-to-end encryption, the more secure and trustworthy the Internet becomes—for everyone.
Jessica Dickinson Goodman from the Internet Society San Francisco Bay Area Chapter is fighting to make end-to-end encryption more widespread and keep kids safe online.

Digitally Empowering Older Adults in Mexico
Older adults in Mexico are gaining scam recognition skills, thanks to training from the Internet Society Mexico Chapter.
So far, over 200 participants are able to use the Internet more securely, and their newfound tools and knowledge are helping them avoid fraud online.

Creating Equity in Digital Access in Pakistan
Working as a human rights lawyer and digital rights advocate, Nighat Dad believes the offline gender divide in Pakistan is mirrored in online spaces.
She works hard to provide marginalized voices with a platform on which they can be heard.

Together, we can combat lack of trust in the Internet.
Restoring trust in the Internet requires a collective effort. Whether you’re an individual, an organization, or a policymaker, your voice and action matter.
Together, we can empower people and communities to make safer choices, advocate for change, and restore trust in the Internet as a global public resource.
