「テレンス・コンラン モダン・ブリテンをデザインする」展が東京ステーションギャラリーで10月12日から来年1月5日まで開催される。イギリスの生活文化に大きな変化をもたらし、デザインブームの火付け役にもなったコンランの人物像に迫る、日本で初めての展覧会となる。
サー・テレンス・オルビー・コンラン（Sir Terence Orby Conran、以下コンラン）は1931年ロンドン生まれ。テキスタイルや食器のパターン・デザイナーとして活動を始め、1960年代にホームスタイリングを提案するショップ「ハビタ（habitat）」をチェーン化して成功を収めた。1970年代からはセレクトショップ「ザ・コンランショップ（THE CONRAN SHOP）」を展開。そのほか、レストラン事業や出版業、都市開発を手掛け、1989年には世界初のデザイン・ミュージアムを設立。デザイン分野での功績と文化事業が評価され、1983年に英国王室より騎士（Knight Bachelor）に叙勲。2020年に自邸で88年の生涯を閉じた。
今回の展覧会では、パターン・デザインした食器やテキスタイルなどの初期プロダクト、家具デザインのためのマケット（模型）、ショップやレストランのためのアイテム、発想の源でもあった愛用品、著書、写真、映像など300点以上の作品や資料を、彼から影響を受けた人々のインタビューを交えて展示する。会場では、新しい書籍や展覧会グッズも販売。また、来年4月19日から6月8日まで福岡市美術館に巡回を予定している。
「Plain, Simple, Useful（無駄なくシンプルで機能的）」なデザインが生活の質を向上させると信じ、生活空間から都市、社会までを視野に入れ、デザインによる変革で世界に影響を及ぼしたコンラン。その偉業に改めて注目が集まる。
