Agentic Workflow Patterns
Agentic workflows follow a handful of fundamental design patterns, which can be combined and matched to address various problems. In more advanced designs, you could have multiple agents with distinct roles that collaborate to achieve a task.
One agent could be a planner that performs the decomposition and delegates subtasks to other agents; a second agent could be a researcher agent that specializes in web searches, a third agent a coder agent for writing code, and so on.
Orchestrator or Workflow Manager There is some central logic that controls the workflow sequence. This might be an explicit orchestrator agent (Sometimes referred to as a “manager” or “router”) or the internal logic of the primary agent. The orchestrator is responsible for task delegation and control flow. It determines what the next step in the workflow should be, and what agent or tool should execute it.
On an e-commerce website, when a customer places an order, the orchestrator(central logic) can trigger a series of steps:
- Validate payment
- Update inventory
- Generate invoice
The orchestrator also determines the order of operation: Payment must be validated before updating inventory, and the inventory must be updated before the invoice can be generated. If the ordered item is out of stock, then the orchestrator will inform the customer. Memory/State

CrewAI

Single-agent orchestration
An LLM-based agent receives a question and plans its approach: “I need to search the web, then maybe do a calculation”. It calls a search() tool to retrieve information, reads the result (the framework feeds the result back into LLM), decides to call a calculator() function to compute something, and finally formulates the answer.
The framework (say, LangChain) takes care of connecting the LLM to these tool functions. The agent dynamically chooses the tools and order of use, based on the question. This single agent performs planning, tool use, and reflection in a single loop.
Multi-agent orchestration
Alternatively, we might have a researcher agent and an analyst agent.
