Jeph Loeb is an Emmy award nominated and Eisner award winning writer/producer living in Los Angeles.   In television, his many credits include Smallville, Lost and Heroes and in film, Teen Wolf and Commando.   In comics, he is best known for his work with the supremely talented artist and partner-in-crime TIM SALE on BATMAN: THE LONG HALLOWEEN, SUPERMAN FOR ALL SEASONS,CATWOMAN: WHEN IN ROME for DC as well as Daredevil Yellow, Spider-Man Blue and Hulk Gray for Marvel.


Tim Sale is not only the artist for the numerous collaborations with Jeph Loeb listed above, but has also worked on DEATHBLOW, BATMAN: LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT, Grendel, Wolverine/Gambit: Victims, Billi 99, Amazon, and various other projects. He had the distinct honor of being the first creator chosen for the artist spotlight series SOLO.

    読んでいくと三人(ハービー･ゴードン･バットマン)が話し合う部分があり、ダークナイトを製作する上でのヒントになったのだなと感じます。

    絵はリアルタッチで日本漫画に感じる【可愛い】より【かっこいい】の方が割合が高いです。

    日本語に訳されたものは口調や言い回しがずいぶん変わっていたりするので、そのままを読みたい方はこちらの洋書をお勧めします。

    ストーリーがよくできていて、一気に読んでしまいました。引き込まれてしまいます。しかし、逆にあまりにもよくでき過ぎているような気もしてきて、そのため星４つにしてしまいました。しかし、面白いことは間違いなしです！
    バットマン、ゴードンそしてハーベイの３人の関係がとても良く、男の友情に読んでいてグッと来るものがあります。それだけに最後の悲劇がとても哀しいです。
    また、キャットウーマンがとてもいい感じです。これまで何作かのバットマンを読みましたが、ようやく彼女の人気の秘密が少し分かりました。「可愛い女」的なところが魅力です。
    Jeph LoebとTim Saleのコンビがこの作品の続編も描いているようなので、こちらもまた読んでみたいと思います。

    Easily one of my favourites. Jeph Loeb executes this clever and authentic 'who dun it?' perfectly and any fan of Batman will certainly be a fan of The Long Halloween. The success this his garnered over the years is thoroughly deserved with classic characters depicted so stylishly by Tim Sale. Dark Victory is definitely going to be my next purchase because Loeb and Sale have proven to be true treasures in our world of popular culture. I suggest you BUY THIS NOW if you haven't already.

    Wow. Believe the hype. THE LONG HALLOWEEN is THE quintessential Batman book, for a number of reasons: great storytelling (full of suspense), great artwork, and an excellent cast of characters including a veritable Who's Who of Batman's colorful rogues gallery.

    THE LONG HALLOWEEN (1996) is a sort of follow-up to Frank Miller's BATMAN: YEAR ONE (1987), chronicling the efforts of Batman, Captain Jim Gordon, and District Attorney Harvey Dent in cleaning up Gotham City. (Gordon and Dent have been promoted since YEAR ONE and Batman seems to have fully blossomed as a Caped Crusader by this time.) The saga focuses on Carmine "The Roman" Falcone, "Gotham's untouchable crime boss", who was introduced in Miller's origin story.

    A mysterious serial killer terrorizes Gotham City for a year, notably striking on holidays every month and seemingly targeting the Falcone crime family. Who is behind it and how can they be stopped? Batman wants to know. The police want to know. Even Falcone wants to know.

    Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale team up for an all-time great Batman yarn. The book has an epic, cinematic feel to it. Reading it is like watching an excellent movie unfold. Sale's artwork is stylized and expressionistic, capturing the film noir sensibilities of the tale. Lots of shadows. The art sets the mood. The story (assisted by the art) is full of suspense and good old-fashioned whodunit mystery. All the way to the end. The writers keep you guessing who the killer is. Seems like everyone has a motive. Is it Salvatore Maroni, Falcone's chief rival? Is it Catwoman? Is it Harvey Dent? Could it be Falcone's own sister?

    What makes this a great Batman book to check out is its depiction of that wonderful world of Batman. Arkham Asylum. Wayne Manor. And those villains. Everyone's favorite Batman villains show up in this mystery saga. Sometimes they are distractions for Batman in his search for the killer, sometimes they are employed by the mob at the heart of the story. Most of the top villains play a significant role in one of the book's thirteen chapters. Readers will see favorites like the Joker, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, the Scarecrow, the Mad Hatter, the Riddler, Solomon Grundy, and yes...Two-Face.

    I especially like how some of these characters are used within the whodunit framework. A highlight for me is the Joker, who shows up in the Christmas issue, quoting Dr. Seuss's "The Grinch". He sees the holiday killer as competition for the city's top psychopath, and wants him out of the picture. The Riddler is brought in by Falcone to use his superior puzzle-solving skill to unravel the identity of the killer. Flirty Catwoman is always showing up and even helps Batman out a few times. The two have an interesting dynamic.

    Christopher Nolan's recent Batman movies, BATMAN BEGINS (2005) and THE DARK KNIGHT (2008), have taken considerable influence from THE LONG HALLOWEEN (among other sources). Particularly regarding characters like Carmine Falcone and Harvey Dent. But there are other similarities, too, though sometimes the details have been switched around. And as much as I love those movies, with their roots in a semi-plausible reality, I don't think you can top this book. The film translations pale in comparison with THE LONG HALLOWEEN in terms of the sheer Batmaniness of the book. The book tells a noir-inspired crime/mafia story, but it lets its freak flag fly in ways the movies don't like to.

    Originally released as thirteen monthly issues from Fall 1996 to Fall 1997, paralleling the monthly exploits of the holiday killer, the complete epic is collected here in graphic novel form. The normal paperback edition includes the scripts and layouts for two "deleted scenes" that would have elaborated on a couple of points in the story.

    For Batman enthusiasts I cannot recommend THE LONG HALLOWEEN highly enough. If there's one Batman book to check out, this is it. Well-written, well-paced, well-drawn. Full of familiar faces and the core themes that define the Dark Knight and the world he inhabits. I couldn't put it down. I read it all in one (lengthy) sitting. It's like watching a movie. This is as good as Batman gets, folks.

    Wer je bezweifelt hat, das Comics wahre Kunst sein können, der wird hier eines besseren belehrt.
    Erzählstruktur, Schattenkompositionen und die Kunst des Weglassen sind kaum noch zu übertreffen.
    Auch wenn man sich zwingt, langsam zu lesen, man wird dieses Buch verschlingen.

    Gotham, quelques temps après l'apparition de Batman, ce dernier, avec le capitaine Gordon, et le jeune procureur Dent (l'ami de Bruce), jurent de nettoyer la ville de sa corruption, incarnée par la mafia du Romain, et les criminels d'Arkham.
    Mais un tueur mystérieux, Holiday, qui ne frappe que les jours fériés, élimine sans discernement, ni logique, agents de police corrompus, gens intégres, et la famille du Romain. Dent est sur les dents, il cherche ce tueur insaisissable, jusqu'a suspecter Bruce, tandis que Batman le suspecte lui...
    Une oeuvre dense, palpitante, que l'on lit d'un trait, malgré ses 400 pages. Loeb réinvente avec talent les personnages, le jeu de cache cache entre Batman et Catwoman, est splendide. Et la personalité de Dent est très travaillée, avant que le jet d'acide ne le transforme en Double Face, il est trouble, il en a assez des lenteurs de la justice, et se demande si il ne devrait pas agir seul, le soir d'un crime attribué à Holliday, sa femme trouve dans ses affaires un revolver identique à celui utilisé par le tueur en série... Double Face n'apparait pas d'un coup, mais suite à une évolution.
    Toutefois, tout ne sera pas réglé à la fin des 400 pages, Loeb nous tiendra encore en haleine pendant 400 autres pages dans la suite de The Long Halloween, Dark Victory... Magnifique

    Batman: The Long Halloween is a master piece of literary and artistic craftsmanship from Jeph Loeb (Batman: Dark Victory, Batman: Hush, Superman/Batman Vol. 1: Public Enemies) and Tim Sale (Batman: Haunted Knight, Catwoman: When in Rome (Batman), Superman for All Seasons) that served as the inspiration for the 2008 billion-dollar-grossing box office blockbuster The Dark Knight.
    A conservative estimate places this story about a year after "Batman: Year One"; Batman is an established crime fighter feared by the mob, James Gordon is an honorable GCPD Captain, and Harvey Dent is the crusading district attorney. All three of these men want the same thing: to rid Gotham City of organized crime and its master crime lord Carmine "the Roman" Falcone, and the three decide to form a pact to bring down the "Roman Empire". Caught up in the madness of this seemingly impossible task are a host of what the cops and mob call "freaks" (costumed criminals) including: The Joker, Solomon Grundy, Poison Ivy, The Riddler, The Scarecrow, The Mad Hatter, and Catwoman (who between her double life as Selina Kyle, the on-again-off-again main squeeze of Bruce Wayne, and her nights playing catch-me-if-you-can with Batman, has set her own interests in the "Roman Empire" (for reasons not fully explained until "Catwoman: When in Rome")).
    However, in the midst of the good guys versus the bad guys, a new player has arisen. Known only as Holiday (because he strikes on holidays), this serial killer is stalking all persons affiliated with the Roman Empire and Falcone's chief rival Salvatore "Boss" Maroni. The original story took place over 13 issues for 13 months from Halloween to Halloween, during which time both Falcone and Maroni have suffered incalculable losses and a blow is delivered to the three key players that may threaten to destroy them all as the newest as most conflicted of freaks arises to join Batman's Rogues Gallery.
    This is a phenomenal story that was originally adapted from "Batman Annual #14: Eye of the Beholder" which cataloged the downfall of Harvey Dent into the villainous Two-Face; TLH simply elaborates upon this same concept in a way that is far more satisfying. The fun of this story is trying to figure out the main mystery: Who is Holiday? There are a row of suspects put forward throughout the story, among whom include: Catwoman, Harvey Dent, even Falcone and Maroni themselves! While the mystery is revealed at the end, there still remains the question as to whether or not they were the only only one acting as Holiday (for more on this go to: <[...]>). Do not miss this masterpiece or its companions "Haunted Knight" and "Dark Victory".
