Beyond the Net Journal: Harlem – New York. Meeting Up With HICAP students after 6 years to recall how the Internet can change seniors lives for the better. The Internet is able to keep seniors engaged in a variety of ways that were not imaginable a few decades ago. The Harlem Internet Computer Access Program, started in 2010 by the US New York Chapter and funded by a Community Grant, is still a shining example of how the Internet can be a great resource for seniors. The project provided Internet access and computer education to low-income, disabled senior citizens. HICAP’s impact to the...Date published 22 November 2016Barbara Stephens, Beyond the Net Funding Programme, BNet Journal, BNet News, Community Grants, Connectivity, Disability Inclusion, Education, Harlem Internet Computer Access, Harlem seniors, HICAP, Internet Development, Internet Access, Internet and seniors, Internet funding, Internet grants, Internet Society, Internet Society Grants, Joly MacFie, Joyce Walker, Merle Bush, New York Chapter, North America, Open Internet, SDG, social benefits, sustainable development

Last week, the Internet Society participated in the physical consultation of the ITU Council Working Group on “International Internet-related public policy issues.” Participation in this CWG-Internet group is closed to non-governments. However, the consultations are open to all stakeholders. During the meeting, stakeholders shared their perspectives from their online submittals on the topic of: How do we build an enabling environment for Internet access? The issue of expanding Internet access has garnered much attention and interest by the international community following the adoption of the...Date published 19 October 2016

Governments in Asia-Pacific have made progress in opening up avenues for public input, but a new study by the Asia-Pacific Bureau suggests that stakeholders want more. The 2015 Asia-Pacific Regional Policy Survey, which collected the views of 3,302 Internet users from different sectors across the region, found that 87% of respondents would like their government to provide greater opportunities for them to be involved in Internet policymaking. The same number stated that they care about Internet affairs in their own country, but only 28% rated themselves as having good or very good...Date published 28 July 2015

Based on the positive response to the online maps we released last year, they tell a story. All of us understand the digital divide, but here we can see it in the differences between regions, and we can puzzle why some countries stand out within a region. To help find answers, we can see how affordability of Internet access differs and can help to explain adoption levels. What about the speed of broadband? Is the speed in our country really so slow compared to our neighbours, or is it better than we thought? And why is the Internet more or less resilient? These were among the topics covered...Date published 13 March 2015
