The project ideas were varied, original, and focused on helping local communities. It was hard, but the Selection Committee managed to pick six projects for funding. These projects were selected for their uniqueness, structure and the benefits they will provide to their communities. With these new additions, Beyond the Net will have funded 26 projects since its inception. These projects are at the core...Date published 20 December 2016

We’re excited to announce 8 new projects under Internet Society’s Beyond the Net program – a program designed to help your big idea to change lives using the net become a reality. Projects are usually developed and run by our Chapters or Interest Groups – a group of volunteers on the ground who are united by location or interest. Here’s the latest round of inspiring projects: seDaara of ThieyetouSenegal Chapter The Internet is hard to come by in Thieyetou. The Senegalese village is about 30 kilometers from the nearest city and surrounded by desert. This means it’s both hard...Date published 31 May 2016

Over the last 12 months my perspective of the world has changed. Not only did I learn about the beauty of diversity, but the 107 Chapter Leaders that attended our 6 regional Chapter Leaders workshops have shown me that magic really exists and happens. Magic happens in every one of our Chapters through the passion and the dedication that each of the Chapter Leaders has for the Internet. Whether in developed countries or in regions where connectivity is still on its way I am amazed by the energy and the dedication to make a difference in people’s lives. Each and every one of our...Date published 14 February 2015

The African regional Bureau (ARB) team held an “Internet Society Africa Team 2014 Update and 2015 Outlook” webinar for all Internet Society members and Chapter leaders from the region on Tuesday 16 December 2014. The two sessions, one in English and one in French, were attended by more than 50 and offered a significant opportunity to reflect on the ARB’s activities in 2014 and to get a sense of what 2015 will bring. The webinar was also a unique occasion for the participants to ask questions and learn about the wide range of activities, which are implemented by the ARB across Africa in...Date published 18 December 2014

This year has been incredibly eventful for Internet governance. Key issues such as privacy, surveillance, net neutrality, and security took centre stage, and Internet Society members have been working hard to find a path forward that stays true to our mission of an open Internet. Our North American Chapters played a critical role in shaping both the regional and global dialogue around Internet governance, by attending and participating in: NETMundial meeting in Brazil the Internet Governance Forum meeting in Istanbul, the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, and the International...Date published 10 December 2014

Earlier this week, I participated in AIS Chennai, hosted by the ISOC India Chennai Chapter. The event was themed “India in the Open and Global Internet” and was focused on Internet Governance issues and what India could offer to the global conversation. Attendees were a mix of business, technical community and academia, with a fairly large number of youth from local tertiary institutions. Interestingly, most of these students were undertaking non-technical courses. Discussions covered a wide range of topics, including privacy, censorship, responsible use of social media, network neutrality,...Date published 04 December 2014

(Photo credit: veni markovski, cc by-nc) For the ITU Plenipotentiary, the Internet Society launched a new Fellowship program to support individuals from several ISOC Chapter Members to participate in the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference. Our goal was to encourage Chapter Member engagement with their national delegations and to advance the principles of the Internet Society community – to preserve an open, reliable and secure Internet. We were delighted with the level of interest from the community and by the quality of applications that we received. Clearly, this is an area of interest for our...Date published 02 December 2014
