Last week, the Internet Society participated in the physical consultation of the ITU Council Working Group on “International Internet-related public policy issues.” Participation in this CWG-Internet group is closed to non-governments. However, the consultations are open to all stakeholders. During the meeting, stakeholders shared their perspectives from their online submittals on the topic of: How do we build an enabling environment for Internet access? The issue of expanding Internet access has garnered much attention and interest by the international community following the adoption of the...Date published 19 October 2016

This blog is based on the speech held by Raúl Echeberría at the opening of the 5th African IGF in Durban, South Africa, on 16th October 2016. My colleagues at the Internet Society and myself have already attended many of the national and regional IGFs that are being organised across the world. And it is amazing to see all the energy around those initiatives and how we have created a new way to discuss and to deal in an open and multistakeholder manner, with things that are very important for our societies.I have been involved in IGF since its inception. In particular, I was...Date published 17 October 2016

One year ago this month, through the adoption of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), governments around the world set a priority on achieving universal and affordable Internet access...Date published 15 September 2016

On September 30, the contract between the US Commerce Departments National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is set to expire. As this date approaches, some members of the United States Congress have expressed reservations about allowing the IANA transition to go forward. There have been calls by some to block the transition while others have suggested that a delay is in order. In a letter to key Congressional leaders, the Internet Society CEO, Kathryn...Date published 12 September 2016

At the Internet Society’s Student Pizza Night during IETF 96, I asked several students from Europe, Asia, and North America how they would respond to the same question:How do we make young Internet users more secure?Every student I asked said that security for young Internet users is a problem. The majority thought that both poor security practices and a general ignorance of the risks contribute to the problem. Pokémon Go was used as an example. Millions of younger users may be playing games without considering the security and privacy implications they may have. In this specific case,...Date published 08 August 2016
