Depuis ses modestes débuts, il y a quatre décennies, l'Internet a révolutionné le monde comme rien d'autre auparavant. Sa capacité à interconnecter, en temps réel, les peuples partout dans le monde et sa transparence encourageant toutes les idées, ont permis le développement d'applications ayant changé nos vies à jamais. Aujourd'hui, deux milliards de personnes bénéficient de l'accès à Internet et à ses applications étonnantes.

Il est intéressant de faire le point sur la croissance vertigineuse de l'Internet au cours des dernières décennies. Néanmoins, entreprendre la tâche audacieuse de se pencher sur l'avenir de l'Internet est d'autant plus intéressant et constitue l'objectif de la conférence. L'INET Rabat réunira des pionniers de l'Internet tels que Glenn Ricart qui est vraisemblablement à l'origine du premier point d'échange Internet, et Markus Kummer qui a dirigé avec succès les derniers forums sur la gouvernance de l'Internet. La conférence comptera également sur la présence d'experts de l'Internet au niveau national, régional et international, qui s'efforceront tous d'approfondir la question de l'avenir de l'Internet.

1re séance : Séance d'ouverture

La séance d'ouverture sera consacrée au discours du Dr. Glenn Ricart. Le Dr. Glenn Ricart est une personnalité importante et un pionnier de l'Internet depuis 1969. Il dirigea l'équipe de rédaction du code relatif à la première mise en œuvre des applications TCP/IP pour l'IBM PC et contribua à introduire l'Internet en Amérique du Sud. Il créa également ce qui fut vraisemblablement le premier point d'échange Internet, le FIX (Federal Internet Exchange) à College Park, dans l'état du Maryland, qui interconnectait les réseaux TCP/IP fédéraux originaux (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glenn_Ricart). Le Dr. Ricart parlera de sa vision de l'avenir de l'Internet.
2e séance : Internet - Passé, présent et futur

La séance commencera par un important exposé de Markus Kummer, coordinateur exécutif du forum sur la gouvernance de l'Internet depuis plus de cinq ans et actuellement vice-président des politiques publiques de l'Internet Society. M. Kummer parlera de l'histoire de la gouvernance de l'Internet et de son statut actuel, et exposera sa vision de l'avenir. D'éminents conférenciers prendront ensuite la parole pour débattre du passé, du présent et de l'avenir des systèmes de noms de domaine et de numération de l'Internet. La séance se terminera par un exposé sur l'évolution de l'infrastructure de l'Internet au Maroc.
3e séance : Opportunités et défis

La séance démarrera par la présentation de quatre scénarios possibles de l'avenir de l'Internet imaginés par des experts en la matière. Les scénarios sont très utiles pour prévoir ce qui arrivera à l'Internet si certaines des tendances (positives ou négatives) se poursuivent et quels seront les impacts sur l'utilisateur final. La présentation des scénarios sera suivie d'un exposé sur l'avenir de la confiance du réseau, présenté par Lucy Lynch, Directrice des initiatives identité et confiance à l'Internet Society.
4e séance : Nouvelles perspectives

Cette séance présentera plusieurs recherches futuristes dans le domaine des technologies de l'Internet. Les participants auront l'occasion de discuter directement avec les chercheurs développant des systèmes susceptibles d'être utilisés à l'avenir.

Ever since its modest beginning four decades ago, the Internet has revolutionized the world like nothing before. Its ability to interconnect, in real time, people from around the world and its openness to new ideas, has enabled the development of applications that have changed our lives forever. Today, two billion people enjoy access to the Internet and its amazing applications.

It is interesting and astonishing to look back at the explosive growth of the Internet in the last decades. But, it’s even more interesting to try to look into the future of the Internet which is what this conference will attempt to achieve. INET Rabat will bring together pioneers of Internet like Glenn Ricart who probably established the first Internet Exchange Point and Markus Kummer who has successfully led all the past Internet Governance Forums. There will also be other major national, regional and International Internet experts who will all try to delve with the issue of the future of the Internet.
Session 1: Opening session

The opening session will be focused on Dr. Glenn Ricart’s keynote speech. Dr. Glenn Ricart is a pioneer of the Internet since 1969 and a key personality of the Internet World. Dr. Ricart led the team that wrote the code for the first implementation of TCP/IP for the IBM PC and was instrumental in bringing the Internet to South America. He also set up what was probably the first Internet Exchange point, the FIX (Federal Internet Exchange) in College Park, Maryland which interconnected the original federal TCP/IP networks. Dr. Ricart will discuss his view of the future of the Internet.
Session 2 : Internet - Past, Present and Future

This session will start with a major presentation by Markus Kummer, the executive coordinator of the Internet Governance forum for more than five years and currently Vice President of Public Policy of the Internet Society. Mr. Kummer will discuss the history of Internet Governance, its current status and his vision of its future. He will be followed by distinguished speakers who will be discussing the past, present and future of the domain name and Internet number systems. The session will end with a presentation on the evolution of the infrastructure of the Internet in Morocco.
Session 3: Opportunities and challenges

This session will start by showing the four possible scenarios of the future of the Internet imagined by experts of the domain. The scenarios are very useful to forecast what will happen to the Internet if some of the trends (positive or negative) continue and what will be the impacts on the end user. The scenarios’ presentation will be followed by a presentation on the future of network confidence by Lucy Lynch, director of the Trust and Identity at the Internet Society.
Session 4 : New visions

This session will present various future scenarios in the domain of Internet technologies. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss directly with researchers who are developing systems that we might use in the future.
