When disaster strikes many of us, no matter where we are, want to do something. The net, with its ability to connect us all, is becoming the tool of choice for digital humanitarians and citizens to lend a hand. Is it making a difference? Looking at the After Nepal’s devastating 2015 earthquake, the Internet became a lifeline. And while communication is now considered a crucial part of aid and social media is part of the toolset, privacy, power and access are just some of the complex challenges that digital humanitarians must navigate when using these platforms in their...Date published 15 March 2016

by Nicoletta Metri Beyond the Net Journal: Pakistan Chapter, Hamara Internet #1 Episode International Women’s Day is a call to action especially in parts of the world where women are still forced to deal with shocking inequality on a daily basis. We would like to celebrate the spirit of women through the amazing story of Nighat Dad, named TIME’s next generation leader. Nighat Dad started her career as a lawyer practicing criminal and family law and also volunteering with women’s rights organizations. By that time she collected and responded to a large number of reports by women...Date published 07 March 2016

Members of the Internet Society Asia-Pacific Bureau team - Rajnesh Singh, Amelia Yeo and Naveed Haq (and joined by Kevin Meynell from the Deploy360 Team) - had a super busy and productive week at the APRICOT 2016 conference in Auckland, New Zealand. The Asia Pacific Regional Internet Conference on Operational Technologies (APRICOT) is the premier forum that brings together regional Internet builders and operators to learn from their peers and experts from around the world. ISOC’s Asia-Pacific Bureau is a long time partner of APRICOT and sponsors the...Date published 05 March 2016

As the industry gears up for the Mobile World Congress (MWC) this month, a new study released today by the Internet Society suggests that mobile may be everywhere but, contrary to the meeting’s slogan, it isn’t everything yet—at least not to everyone in Asia-Pacific. The Mobile Internet Usage Trends in Asia-Pacific report, based on a survey of 1,620 Internet users from 37 economies in the region, found that younger people, specifically those below 25 years old, have a more diverse engagement with the mobile Internet - using it for activities that range from social networking and entertainment...Date published 19 February 2016

There are currently some 80 or so active Internet exchange points (IXP) operating in Asia-Pacific, according to a database maintained by Packet Clearing House. These are in various stages of development, having as little as 2 to as many as 170 participants, but more than half are concentrated in developed markets like Japan and New Zealand. Most emerging economies in the region only have one or two, and more than 20 countries—most of them in the Pacific—do not have a single IXP. We have written at length about the benefits of having a carrier-neutral IXP. Costs and delays associated with...Date published 15 February 2016

Coming from the urban part of Pakistan, the Internet is nothing new for me and not as novel anymore, as I have been using it every day for the past many years. However, for many who don’t have access, it can indeed be a thing of wonder that can be used to connect, communicate and collaborate. This is something I realized during the first phase of our ‘Wireless for Communities’ (W4C) pilot project in Pakistan. Today, wireless technologies are an excellent alternative, especially in countries that are lagging behind in terms of getting the Internet to rural communities. Embracing Internet...Date published 12 February 2016

I recently attended the 24th edition of Convergence India, the ICT and Broadcast expo in Delhi. The theme of the exhibition and a conference track was the much talked about Digital India. This topic, like the project, has filled the 1.25 billion Indians with pride and evoked much emotion at the same time. In the words of Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India: “Digital connectivity should become as much a basic right as access to school … under Digital India, IT will be used to drive government processes to improve service delivery and programme implementation and provide broadband...Date published 03 February 2016

The workshop was organized by the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT), and jointly hosted by the Ministry of Information and Communication (MoIC) and Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA). This workshop was part of the implementation of the SATRC Action...Date published 12 January 2016

Last month at the United Nations in New York, world leaders agreed on 17 Sustainable Development Goals which countries must strive to carry out in the next 15 years. Like its predecessor, the 3rd MDG, the 5th SGD aims to achieve gender equality worldwide through an extensive list of targets, and this time with an explicit pledge to harness ICT use to empower women. The Philippines is well positioned to lead the charge towards a more gender-equal Internet in the Asia-Pacific region. It has long been one of the most gender-equal nations in the world, and the only one in Asia-Pacific to...Date published 18 December 2015

I recently attended IETF94 Yokohama and most people who participated waxed lyrical over it. This consensus says a lot as this meeting saw the largest contingent in the last 10 years in Asia, with 1,320 attendees. And, the people attending were truly diverse. From locals to people travelling nearly 24 hours to Yokohama, IETF hosted nearly 300 first time participants and, from ten public policy leaders to 14 technical fellows to a 16-year old coder. Some were observers at some of the 123 working groups whereas, others were influencers there or at the Birds-of-a-Feather (BOF). There were...Date published 08 December 2015
