In addition to our work in helping operators deploy IPv6, DNSSEC, and improve routing resiliency/security, the Deploy360 team is also engaged in talking to different Network Operators’ Groups (NOGs) and trying to help them start regional Best Current Operational Practices (BCOP) efforts and activities. We are helping encourage these regional NOGs to document how they run their networks and deploy these new technologies.
Over the course of 2013 and 2014, we received a tremendous amount of feedback from operational communities around the world. This page lists the current regional BCOP efforts. Additionally, please see these resources:
- Summary of identified topics from global feedback
- Blog posts about Best Current Operational Practices (BCOP)
NANOG Regional BCOP:
In North America, NANOG has a regional effort to document BCOPs at: https://bcop.nanog.org/
Documents:
- Ratified BCOPs:
- BCOP Development Process
- IPv6 Subnetting
- Public Peering Exchange
- Draft BCOPs:
- IPv6 Peering and Transit
- IPv6 Security Myths
- IPv6 Extension Headers

Mailing-list:
BCOP candidate documents:
- RIPE-554
- IPv6 troubleshooting for helpdesks (latest candidate in PDF)
- Controlled IPv6 deaggregation by large organizations
- Euro-IX IXP BCOP
- BGP Best Practices (still in translation to English process, currently in French)
At RIPE67 we had the BCOP activity update lightning talk, followed by very successful BoF, that turned into WG-like meeting with presentations and discussion from the audience. As a result we asked for a WG at a closing plenary, but the feeling of community was that we need to start lightweight and form a Task Force. Official web page is still in progress, we’ll publish here all the data as soon as they become available. The mailinglist remains the same (read above).
At RIPE68 we had a first RIPE BCOP TF meeting that took place on Monday at 6pm. Agenda was packed (4 presentations) and we are looking in starting two new BCOP documents – BGP and DNSSEC. There is also a video recording of a meeting.
At RIPE69 meeting we had a vibrant community involvement in the BCOP Task Force with packed agenda that did not fit into 1 hour slot that we were assigned. On the agenda pages there are also video recordings of every presentation. At the end of the meeting 3 new document proposals emerged during the “open mike” minutes:
- IPv6 deployment for small/medium ISP
- IP resources transfer
- Network complexity and correlation to troubleshooting
RIPE BCOP Task Force is co-chaired by Benno Overeinder and Jan Žorž.
Latin America and Carribean (LAC) regional BCOP Task Force:
A BCOP Task Force is started under LACNOG, co-chaired by Luis Balbinot and Pedro R Torres Jr. The group asked for a mailing list and a webpage under LACNOG umbrella, we’ll publish it here as soon as any data becomes available. At the meeting the policy and procedures of the group was discussed and some topics identified. The group still has to decide on primary language of the produced documents (Spanish/Portuguese/English).
Africa region BCOP:
In Africa, the BCOP initiative was first introduced in May of 2013. Since then, there has been growing interest which culminated into to a BoF in Abidjan, (AfriNIC19 meeting), and a subsequent session and BoF at the AIS/AfriNIC 20 meeting in Djibouti (June 2014).
The BCOP effort is led by Douglas Onyango and the current focus is to put in place a mailing list, an online BCOP document repository as well as development of two or more drafts that can be discussed during a session at AFRINIC 21 in Mauritius (Nov 2014).
Asia region BCOPs:
JANOG started a BCOP Task Force with Seiichi Kawamura and Yoshinobu Matsuzaki co-chairing it.
Presentations
We have been traveling around the world discussing these ideas at various network operator groups. To date we have presented at:
- NANOG
- RIPE
- ENOG
- MENOG
- AfriNOG/AfriNIC
- LACNOG/LACNIC
- CaribNOG
- Southeast Europe RIPE Regional Meeting (SEE)
- UKNOF
- PLNOG
There was great interest in creating regional BCOP efforts and as we become aware of those we will add them to this page.
If you would like more information about this program or would like to have the topic presented at your network operator group, please contact us at deploy360@isoc.org.
Can someone please re-write this in plausible English? This sentence must win an all time award for obscurity and certainly does not seem to reflect a desire to be inclusive…
