Bestselling "Java in a Nutshell" by David Flanagan Updated
Sebastopol, CA--O'Reilly & Associates has announced the arrival of a new
edition of one of their all-time bestsellers,
Java in a Nutshell by David Flanagan. This new (third) edition covers Java 1.2 and 1.3, and
all the classes and interfaces in the following APIs: java.lang, java.io,
java.beans, java.math, java.net, java.security, java.text, java.util, and
javax.crypto.
"When Java 1.0 was released, it contained 212 classes and interfaces. That
was a very manageable size," said Flanagan. "Java 1.1 was more than double
the size of the initial release, and the Java 2 Platform was 7 times as
large as the initial release that fit so nicely in a nutshell."
In order to cover Java thoroughly,
Java in a Nutshell,
Third Edition is
now part of the three-volume set of quick references that every Java
programmer needs. It is an essential companion to the recently released
Java Enterprise in a
Nutshell, which focuses on the Java Enterprise APIs
as well as the brand new
Java Foundation Classes
in a Nutshell, written
for Java programmers who are writing applications that use graphics or
graphical user interfaces. All three books may be purchased separately.
"If you are a client-side programmer who is working with graphics or
graphical user interfaces, you will probably want to supplement Java in a
Nutshell with Java Foundation Classes in a Nutshell" said Flanagan. "If
you are a server-side or enterprise programmer, you'll likely want Java
Enterprise in a Nutshell."

What Some Reviewers Said About Previous Editions:
"David Flanagan's Java in a Nutshell has quality stamped on its cover and
embedded in its acid-free paper. O'Reilly has a reputation for books with
terse, accessible writing and this book is no exception I'm sure this book
will meet the needs of programmers everywhere who want to get up to speed
with Java."
-- Dr. Dobbs
"Far and away the best book on the subject...[has] a 'maturity' that's
lacking in other books --the overall structure and organization of the book
are very well thought out."
-- Alex Strasheim
"The best printed Java material is O'Reilly & Associates' Java in a
Nutshell. In typical nutshell fashion it is concise, packed with
information, and not cluttered with fluff."
-- Roger Jennings
"Neither a reference or a tutorial but a wonderful desktop reference.
Written by folks who know the language and published by folks committed to
quality. Another bargain from O'Reilly."
-- Randy M. Zeitman, compbookreview.com
"Definitely recommended."
-- Fatbrain.com
"The alchemy of Java isn't harder than C++, just different. All you need
for programming prestidigitation is the right kind of spellbook. This is
it: a book designed to lie right next to your keyboard, ready to tell you
the quick answers to your questions as you write your programs If you are
a professional programmer with serious Java needs, then Java in a Nutshell is a must-buy book."
-- Elizabeth Crowe, CNET
"...a valuable resource for Java programmers Java in a Nutshell maintains
the high quality that can be found in the entire O'Reilly Nutshell series.
At only $19.95 you get an inexpensive technical book filled with expensive
information."
-- Suzanne A. Smith, ComputerLink, San Diego Union Tribune
"Java in a Nutshell should have you creating applets as fast as you
can say 'Eat at Joes'."
-- David Dean, Internet World
"This book is a must-have reference for Java programmers."
-- IBM Systems Journal
"The best Java book I've seen so far is O'Reilly's Java in a Nutshell by
David Flanagan. It's a desktop reference geared towards those with some
C/C++ experience, but it also makes a good reference for those with little
programming background. At $20, it's a bargain in this class."
-- Aaron Osterby, Puget Sound Computer User
"This is on my desk and it should be on yours! I think this book is one
that has to be on your desk or you are not really a Java programmer!"
-- Jonathan Mark Smith, Staten Island Java Group
"A 'must' for anyone wanting to keep up with one of today's most important
computer languages for operations on the World Wide Web."
-- James Cox, Midwest Book Review
