Dan Gillmor Wins 2004 World Technology Award for Media & Journalism
Author of We the Media and San Jose Mercury News columnist honored for
innovations in technology journalism
Sebastopol, CA--Dan Gillmor, author of We the Media: Grassroots
Journalism by the People, for the People and Business and Technology
columnist for the San Jose Mercury News, has won the 2004 World
Technology Award for Media & Journalism. Presented by the World Technology
Network at the 2004 World Technology Summit on October 8, the award
recognizes Gillmor's work as an outstanding innovator in technology
journalism.
Gillmor is the preeminent chronicler of the impact of technology on
journalism and an ardent champion of "grassroots journalism." In We
the Media, his weblog, and his column, Gillmor asserts that the Internet
has broken Big Media's monopoly on making the news. He reports on the
enormous impact that new Internet-based tools such as weblogs, mail lists,
peer-to-peer, and digital video are having on the way we create and
consume the news. His thoughtful analysis probes both the benefits and
potential pitfalls of these new forms of participatory journalism.
The 2004 World Technology Summit & Awards were held in San Francisco on
October 7th and 8th, in association with Nasdaq, Microsoft, Philips,
Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, TIME magazine, Fortune magazine, Science
magazine/AAAS, Technology Review magazine, and Business 2.0 magazine.
