Does anyone know of free software for creating gestures or special touch zones on my Toshiba's touchpad?

Check out the iGesture framework. It might not be as intuitive as you are expecting, but it is free and it does gesture recognition. Also, there are programs like the Opera browser that implement gest... full answer >
