We just pushed out an updated header design for all repository pages, you can see it in action on any of our project pages
The new headers fixed some long outstanding bugs (downloading the wrong branch for example) and added a few new little features (exposing HTTP clone urls, noting which branch you’re currently on)
Hope you like ’em!
that "Branch: etc" to the right is kinda misleading to me.
I keep expecting it to let me change branches.
I agree with locks. As a comparision, it would be good to see how it looks when:
There is too much veritcal space used before the actual content IMO. A way to collapse the title/description would be nice too.
Otherwise, nice UI updates. An improvement over the previous look.
It is confusing that "Admin" is now a button alongside "Fork" and "Watch" but it acts like one of the tabs ("Source", "Commits", etc) because none of them are selected when you are in Admin and it uses subtabs underneath the regular tabs, like a tab would. It's just a bit misleading.
Very nice! Unfortunately, somewhat buggy also. :(
For example: https://grab.by/1pRH (There's some overlap due to the long repository name.)
Also, the "Add auto-responder" is still not styled at all.
@KieranP: the vertical space is actually the same as before (+/- 5px). If it feels more open in the same pixels, I've succeeded :)
@cmelbye unfortunately if I waited to deploy until I'd fixed everything you wouldn't ever get any updates
@kneath: I guess the whitespace highlights it more. What's next?
@kneath it's been an annoyance with github for some time that you have to scroll every page to do anything useful. I'm surprised this didn't change the available space, but with this new stylin', is there a chance we'll get a "minimize" button?
@djmitche, minimize will do what?
Looks great.
Could need some more attention when not logged in, though - the "sign up" banner design looks a bit out of place: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/546793/github-unlogged.png
Looks very nice, only one thing I've noticed though is if you're looking at your own project and mouse over "Private" it would appear git@github.com:USER/REPO.git is being appended to your user URL so you end up with something like https://github.com/USER/git@github.com:USER/REPO.git/
I am happy that this change accidentally fixed bug in displaying "Source | Commits | Network | ...." navigation bar form my ancient Mozilla 1.17.2 web browser.
This huge pledgie.com button on all my public repositories is annoying.
Could it be brought back to the admin panel?
I really like the new update. The way the nav is separated is so much more clear IMO. Thanks!
Bugs:
Fork Queue - does not show when clicking into wiki. Admin/watch/pull request links do not show in Fork Queue, Graphs or Wiki. Also, can you please make a way to disable the Download Source link? I have 'downloads' disabled for that tab, but still want the Download Source disabled for a certain repo. Cloning of course is fine.
@kneath Love the changes you've been making over the past few months! Keep 'em coming!
Awesome! The repository tab strip was my least favourite part of the GitHub UI.
I agree with @djmitche, though – it would be very nice if there wasn’t so much UI, or at least not on every page. The way git works, it would IMO make more sense for most of this UI to show up only on the root of a repository (ie. not when browsing subdirectories or looking at files). And/or if it could be made more compact in general that would be nice.
(While we’re at it, let me also note that the light blue Commit blocks consume way too much vertical space – do all four SHA1s really have to be visible to the user at all times?)
Anyway, given the profile layout updates that were rolled out a while ago and now these changes, I have no doubt that @kneath will eventually sort out in some fashion or other all of the things that bother me. Keep up the good work. :-)
A great improvement IMO. Good job.
I'm a big GitHub fan, but this is an example of horrible design and usability. =( What's up with "all gray"? ...and what happened to your previous designer (that did a great job)? I think you should get a (new?) interaction designer as many people depend on GitHub now on daily basis and deserves a good UI; the current designer seem to make things more confusing - harder to percept, which is not good for open-source which involves a lot of details. It's a quite common mistake to fix something that's not broken, but I didn't expect this to happen GitHub that usually surprises me/us in a good way. =o C'mon, please revert this?!
Holy cow, awesome.
Feels much cleaner and more usable, a big win all around.
I really like the new update.
The repository description/URL area, in my opinion, take up too much space for the purpose they serve.
I think it's an improvement over the previous version. Man, these people are pretty polar on their views: love or hate.
Bottom line: good iteration. :)
@interhive: If I'm not getting people angry, I'm not doing my job right :)
Did the feature to create a Pledgie campaign disappear?
@Htbaa: Unfortunately yes it's temporarily disabled due to some API changes on pledgie's side (unrelated to the recent redesign). It'll be back soon.
I too miss the colors on the fork/watch buttons. I had a hard time finding them when I first saw the page.
