FAQ  Troubleshooting Information Why is my Classic TCP/IP hosed, but OS-X sees the internet? Why does /etc/resolv.conf point to /var/run/resolv.conf, which doesn't exist? Is the system startup logged anywhere? General Troubleshooting Tips Why is my Classic TCP/IP hosed, but OS-X sees the internet? Problem: TCP/IP networking works from MacOS X, but not from Classic -- but AppleTalk works in both! Fiddling with /etc/resolv.conf can hose your Classic TCP/IP control panel settings. Look for garbled text in your "Search domains" box, after selecting "Administrator User Mode" in the Classic TCP/IP Control Panel. Solution: (apparently) root# rm /private/etc/resolv.conf root# rm /var/run/resolv.conf root# ln -s /var/run/resolv.conf /private/etc/resolv.conf Why does /etc/resolv.conf point to /var/run/resolv.conf, which doesn't exist? Wayne Folta proffers a reasonable theory in Network Admin, which was subsequently officially confirmed by Justin Walker, here. Is the system startup logged anywhere? I currently have no way of finding out why my machine hangs and times out at a couple of spots in the startup cycle... From the terminal, type "dmesg". You may also find it useful to watch your system console during boot by depressing and holding down the v-key from startup. Contributed by Andrew C. Greenberg General Troubleshooting Tips Learn to use everything in /var/log, especially /var/log/system.log. This will be a totally new experience for traditional Mac support staff, since the Classic MacOS has no real "logging" per se...that is, no easy way to find "this user deleted this font at such-and-such a time", etc. Contributed by Sunil Mishra
