How we can tackle challenges, ranging from energy conservation to economic and social innovation, using the global network -- of which the public Internet is just one piece? To help solve a myriad of problems today, author Sarah Sorensen, author of The Sustainable Network: The Accidental Answer for a Troubled Planet, points out that the best tool for enacting change already exists, lying literally at our fingertips. Read more.
Join Nilofer Merchant, author of The New How, for this free, live webcast. The opposite of whiteboarding, the MurderBoarding decision process ensures teams creatively generate many potential options before "killing off" options one-by-one until there is single best solution for a specific organization and situation. The result is the organization aligns to a common goal and takes on clear, achievable, and measurable goals. This session provides you with a framework for nailing the tough choices you need to make to win. Attendance is limited for this October 22nd event, so register now!

Life With TED - Micromanaging Your Carbon Footprint
I've spent three days watching my power consumption like a hawk, here's how it's going
I've been interested in having a better handle on my electrical consumption for a long time. Our family regularly goes through 1100-1200 kWh a month, and it's been frustrating that I couldn't really get a grip on where or when the power was really being used. I want to get my power usage under control. Fortunately Google announced on their blog that normal mortals could now order a device called The Energy Detective (or TED, as he's known by his friends...) Using TED, I've been able to quickly find the critical items that I need to make sure get shut off when not used. Read more.

Poles, Politeness, and Politics in the Age of Twitter (Stephen Fry) -- A post from the blog of actor Stephen Fry begins with a discussion of a UK storm but rapidly turns into a discussion of fame in the age of Twitter, modern political discourse, the "deadwood press", and The Commons in Twitter Assembled. This and more in today's Four Short Links. Read more.

Only Connect - Should Broadband Access Be a Right?
Finland makes broadband access a right, $7 billion US stimulus for rural broadband improvements
As our economy continues to lose mass in favor of information-based goods (U.S. exports lost 50% of their physical weight per dollar from 1993 to 1999*) and we continue to see the decoupling of workforce from workplace, connectivity is a critical factor in economic exchange and competitive advantage. Countries that build wide, fast networks to the last mile will have a huge leg up. This week gave us two reasons to reconsider the state of broadband connectivity in the US. Read more.
