Program Will Explore What Digital Publishing Means Today
Sebastopol, CA, October 28 - Registration has opened for the O’Reilly Tools of Change for Publishing Conference, taking place February 9-11, 2009, at the Marriot Marquis Times Square in New York City. Program Chair Andrew Savikas and co-Chair Mac Slocum have announced the program, which investigates the emerging trends in digital publishing through keynotes, sessions, tutorials, panels, and other events designed to surpass the high expectations inspired by the sold-out TOC 2008.
The third annual TOC Conference will decipher the tools of change for the industry and help cut through the hype in order to reach a more profitable future in publishing. From authoring, editing, and layout to distribution and consumption, new technologies will continue to change all aspects of publishing. TOC 2009 will focus on industry-wide strategic issues, like the changing retail and supply-chain landscape. In addition to examining “long-view” trends, the conference will also supply practical tales from pioneers already experimenting and innovating on the digital frontier of paid content.

Priceless Items Donated in Support of Change
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 29 - TechWeb and O’Reilly Media,
Inc., co-producers of the annual Web 2.0 Summit, announce the benefiting
organizations and lots of the “Web Meets World” auction, which will take
place on the evening of Wednesday, November 5 at the Palace Hotel in San
Francisco. The proceeds from the event will benefit three charity
organizations — the Lance Armstrong Foundation, WITNESS and Green For All.
For more information visit: https://www.web2summit.com.
Sponsored by Microsoft, the “Web Meets World” auction is inspired by
the theme of looking beyond immediate needs and into a space that
transforms limits into opportunities. The selected auction beneficiaries do
just that. The Lance Armstrong Foundation, LIVESTRONG.org, unites people in
the fight against cancer, providing useful information and tools people
with cancer need to live life on their own terms. WITNESS uses video and
online technologies to open the eyes of the world to human rights
violations, empowering people to transform personal stories of abuse into
powerful tools for justice and policy change. The third organization, Green
For All, promotes green-collar jobs and opportunities for disadvantaged
communities working to build an inclusive, green economy strong enough to
resolve the ecological crisis and lift people out of poverty.

Robin Wauters mentions Web 2.0 Expo Europe in article on European startups:
A lot has already been said and written about the current economic crisis, and how the financial meltdown is and will keep on affecting startups in the US. VC’s and angel investors are telling their portfolio companies to say goodbye to the good times and batten down the hatches, and at the same time raising the bar for new financing rounds, while startup CEO’s are executing substantial lay-offs and some company founders are even jumping ship altogether.

J. Kleske summs up day one of Web 2.0 Expo Europe:
This is how I summed up the atmosphere after the first few days of the Web 2.0 Expo Europe last year. “They are just doing their usual show” was a complain I heard from many, “We have heard it all many times before. Do they think w’re dumb?”
What a difference a year makes. Following the communication of Techweb and O’Reilly in the last weeks you could really hear them making a huge effort of doing it right this time. I mean they could have easily said “Screw you, guys, we’re going to another city where people actually appreciate what we’re doing”. But instead they came back and asked for a second chance. And this time they are not bringing us “the gospel of Web 2.0″ but are doing a lot to empower the European web community.

Ryan Paul :
Fortunately, I’m not the only open source software enthusiast who doesn’t buy into what I view as Stallman’s hysteria and defeatism. Earlier this year, tech publisher Tim O’Reilly discussed the issue during a keynote presentation at the annual O’Reilly Open Source Conference (OSCON). O’Reilly acknowledged the challenges posed by cloud computing, but he also pointed out that the vibrant open source software community has already started exploring experimental solutions
