Handmade Music tonight in Brooklyn!
Handmade Music NYC is back at it with an awesome lineup for tonight, complete with unusual sounds, instruments, and interfaces. Have a look at a couple of the projects in attendance -
The Crudbox Sequencer -
CrudBox is a hardware step sequencer which replaces digitally created or analog synthesized sounds typically associated with sequencers and electronic music with the amplified sounds of whatever electronic or electromechanical devices are plugged into it. Solenoids and motors can be plugged in and sequenced while striking or otherwise moving or vibrating any physical material and their sounds amplified in real time using contact mics. These mics, or any other sound source, can be plugged into hacked guitar pedals and effects boxes which can then also be sequenced by CrudBox. Cassette decks, reel to reels, turntables, power tools, and any other sound generating devices can also be hacked and sequenced.
LOOOP-R: Original Audiovisual Hardware -
Loop-R is a real-time video performance tool based in the exploration of low-tech, used technology and human engineering research. With this tool its author is giving a shout to industry, using existing and mistreated technology in innovative ways, combining concepts and interfaces: merging segregated interfaces (GUI and physical devices) into one.
Hardware and software blend themselves into a new genre providing free control of video-loops in an expressive hybrid tool.
Check out the full lineup here.

Arduino class in Pittsburgh July 25
Learn to build your own Arduino board (and learn to solder while you're at it) at this introductory class being offered by Hack Pittsburgh. The class is hardly more expensive than an assembled board would be, and you walk out with more skillz than when you came in.

Happy Birthday Tesla - from ArcAttack (and MAKE too!)
The members of ArcAttack send Birthday wishes to Nikola Tesla the best way they know - with crackling bolts of electricity. [Thanks Joe!]
Consider that sentiment very much seconded! Happy 153rd B-day Nik!

Keith Sinzinger : Tubular Bells: Construction and Processing
Fresh from having performed in the Baltimore Electronic Music Festival Keith will talk about how he conceived of, researched and constructed a set of tubular bells from scrap galvanized pipe. He'll also touch on some other ongoing musical construction projects. Following a Q&A session, he'll demonstrate the bells as he generally use them in performance, processed through a variety of electronic effects.
About Fast Forty
Keith calls this genre Intense Ambient: found sounds, altered electronics, scrap metal and other devices, blended to soothe and stimulate. His musical roots were developed in an industrial city (Cleveland), where he grew up in the virtual shadow of a Ford plant. He's also lived most of his years within a few blocks of railroads. His musical experiments tend to reflect these environmental influences.
DorkbotDC would like to thank HacDC, DC's hacker space, for arranging this talk and inviting us to co-present with them.

HacDC members Alden Hart (still aglow with kudos from his MAKE Magazine "LED Light Brick" project and blog mentions on MAKE, Boing Boing, and Boing Boing Gadgets) and Elliot Williams (HacDC president and teacher extraordinaire) will show us what they made for the recent Art-o-matic event.
More info here.

The Furby Youth Choir

Those of you who attended Maker Faire 2008 in Austin may recall the performance of local circuit-benders Furby Youth Choir. I recently had a chance to attend one of their live performances at the United States Art Authority, next to Spider House on Fruth St. in the UT Campus area.
A Furby, for those who were living in a bunker preparing for Y2K during their vogue, is a robot toy that looks a lot like Gizmo from The Gremlins. They talk and sing and move their mouths and eyes and other neat stuff, including reacting to their environment and, to an extent, "learning" certain patterns of behavior. The large feature set makes them popular with hackers, especially circuit benders.
Anyhoo, as one can imagine, a small army of them singing on-stage is fairly unsettling. What's more, FYC's music is decidedly avant-garde, dissonant, and ominous. Two performers stand over a table covered with circuit boards and wires and bend the aforesaid circuits in real time. Add to that mix a video projector beaming twisted animations and other visual psychedalia upstage, and the whole experience becomes a bit....overwhelming. US Art Authority is a small venue, and to my 25-to-34-year-old ear, they were rather too loud for it, but they still get huge points for originality. If you get a chance to see them, you should. Just be sure to pack a pair of earplugs.

Heavy Metal II at MOS
Heavy Metal II, Amped Up is the culminating event, hosted by the Boston Museum of Science and the Lemelson-MIT Program, is part of Eurekafest, a multi-day celebration designed to empower a legacy of inventors.
Watch teams of high school students from across the country compete in an all-day challenge to build wind turbines that can hoist empty garbage cans to the ceiling of the Blue Wing. Explore a range of "windy" activities with Museum Exhibit Halls interpreters and educators from the Smithsonian's Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation.
Go check it out, and take a wander through the Museum of Science, which has lots of great exhibits, and an educators' library. Take some photos and share them with us in the MAKE Flickr pool.

Artomatic 500

Looking to build and race your own kinetic sculpture in the DC area? Don't mIss the Artomatic 500 on Saturday, June 27:
Racers and crew are invited to create a cardboard "vehicle" which could be two dimensional, three dimensional -- even four dimensional if you can make it happen -- as long as it it entirely powered by a walking or running human and is decorated by the driver and his or her team. No engine or propulsion system of any sort is allowed. Wheels are optional. In fact, they are discouraged.
Word is that you should bring your own refrigerator box if you're so inclined.
The Artomatic site has lots of info, and check out their Flickr pool.
