Last time we talked about how to work with YouTube videos and how to implement those into our app. We worked hard to implement typical features that can be found on most video sites like play, pause, seek etc. As we already know, there is one external library used in our application that allows us to load videos into the swf and manipulate the video using ActionScript 3.0. Now it’s time to actually work on the admin part of the app and the features that allow us and all our application users (players) to add their own videos along with mistakes. This way the application will much more extensible. There are lots of Facebook users who are movie fans and we will give them the ability to contribute. Read more.
A couple of months ago, I got a brand new Dell laptop. To future-proof it, I ordered it with enough RAM that it needed 64-bit Windows to fully use all that muscle. So, once my in-house IT department (AKA my wonderful husband) installed Windows 7 on it, I fired it up for the first time and went through the process of setting it up to connect to the servers at work. Oops! I immediately had a problem. The Citrix client that the company I work for provides for download and installation won't even install to 64-bit Windows, and according to Server Guy (yes, that's his official title), the 64-bit clients it does make require an upgrade to the servers. For almost a decade, thanks to privacy laws, U.S. government web sites have been prohibited from using cookies to maintain information on visitors between sessions. (Session cookies are allowed because of their short duration.) Because so many useful features are enabled by cookies, the Office of Management and Budget released a request for proposals this week seeking new perspectives on the cookie policy and ways to enable the features that will make public participation in government more appealing. I took the opportunity to re-examine the federal approach to privacy, and submitted the proposal that follows in this blog.

Over the last few weeks, media coverage of the iTunes app store often touches on concerns about Apple's approval process. Some apps drew enough complaints that Apple pulled them off the app store. With thousands of developers wanting to launch apps and Apple unable to come up with a more efficient vetting process, I'm revisiting an earlier post on the duration of incubation periods by category. No, this isn't my new perspective on using the Google Maps API. In fact, it's much more exciting. Google recently released a new addition to the Maps API for Flash, including 3D perspective, and a new control set that is reminiscent of the controls in Google Earth! Straight from Google: "With a perspective map, the map is projected on a viewport (the screen) using a virtual point of reference in front of the screen (the camera). These three components (the map, the viewport and the camera) form a perspective on the viewport which gives the illusion of depth perception to the map." Read more.

Identity expert Will Norris has two new blogs about OpenID's potential use for privacy. As he points out, OpenID was meant to strengthen and share identity, not to protect privacy. Ever since I posted a how-to on establishing guidelines for social media in the workplace, the issue that has generated the most energy concerns productivity. Employers it seems are very worried about lost productivity due to social media usage (Facebook, Twitter etc.). I can’t really get my arms around it because I don’t think these tools bring out any really new productivity concerns (and yes I am aware of operant conditioning). Read more.
