Cisco, VMware, NetApp testing multi-tenant cloud

Cisco, VMware and NetApp are testing an end-to-end secure multi-tenancy platform. While it is well known that the three data center amigos have been feverishly pitching their joint so-called "private cloud" architecture, private clouds are built for the exclusive use of one company. A multi-tenancy infrastructure has but one purpose, to allow multiple companies to share the same hardware. It is a cloud service. The three amigos would be taking server, storage, network components and partition them so that they think they own the joint but they are really sharing the underlying physical hardware. This is different than most multi-tenant cloud services today, which leave it to the database to note who owns what.

Cisco attempts to explain (and explain) its strategy. In a word: video
Submitted by Cisco Subnet on Mon, 07/06/2009
"Market adjacencies." That's the business-speak term for video that John Chambers loves in this YouTube interview posted late last week.. He is using that term to explain a strategy around the company's collection of offbeat, acquired products that range from set-top boxes to a handheld consumer video recorder.

Brad Reese on Cisco
Why HP ProCurve is dismantling Cisco's market share on a deal-by-deal basis by Brad ReeseI spoke on the phone today with the Americas Vice President and General Manager of HP ProCurve - Karl Soderlund, and learned why HP ProCurve is dismantling Cisco's market share on a deal-by-deal basis, for instance: If you trade-in your Cisco equipment, HP ProCurve will take 20% off its list price. By doing so, I feel that HP ProCurve is whacking Cisco in its most vulnerable spot, its lack of pricing flexibility. And why does Cisco lack pricing flexibility? Well, mostly because... 5

Networking Geek to Geek
Three Better Ways of Doing Networking That We Ain't Doin' by Jimmy Ray PurserI really enjoy tweaking things to squeeze just a bit more power out of what I already have. If I am building a small block Chevy engine, over clocking a server, reprogramming a EEPROM or trimming out a fishing lure I love pushing stuff to its absolute limits. However, sometimes all the modding in the world just can not solve the core problem. Putting a .265 duration cam, rollers, headers and hi riser will improve the suck factor of 305 Chevy very little. It's time to scrap the crap and... 4

Jamey Heary: Cisco Security Expert
Cisco Releases substantial update to its Enterprise Security Management Platform by Jamey HearyLast week Cisco posted the 3.3 version of its enterprise class Cisco Security Manager (CSM) product. All sorts of new features were introduced, most especially are performance improvements throughout, ASA 8.2 support, IPS 7.0 support, ASR router support, and finally full support for IOS zone-based firewall. Another notable feature is the bulk import/export functionality. This allows you to work with objects, devices, and device overrides in bulk instead of the previous per device...

Happy 2-Year Anniversary - A Reminder to Focus on What's Really Important in Network Engineering by Michael MorrisThis Saturday, July 4th, marks the two year anniversary of my "From the Field" blog on Network World. It's been a great and demanding experience. Best I can tell, I've written over 140 blogs in those 2 years on everything from Webtorials to Routing iSCSI with 10GIG. There are usually around 10,000 to 15,000 unique readers of my blogs each month. I have to thank Network World for marketing Cisco Subnet so well and I have to thank my loyal readers who wait each week to read my eloquence (come... 5

Security advisories from Cisco and elsewhere
Cisco Security warns of IOS HTTP hole with no patch Cisco on Friday reissued a security advisory originally released to the public in December, 2005. The advisory concerns a vulnerability that exists in the IOS HTTP server in which HTML code from output such as a show buffers command, will be passed to the browser requesting the page. This HTML code could be interpreted by the client browser to potentially execute malicious commands. There are...
