This morning's XKCD, Latitude, spells out one of the reasons people will be weary of setting up continuous location trackers: the future self. The future self forgets that they are sharing their location and then act as if no one knows where they are going. In this case Megan's friend tracks her stops at a sex shop, toy store, hardware store and finally the burn ward, telling a pretty clear story of a mistranslated kama sutra (ahem). Read more.
If you're a geeky type living in the West or planning a trip to California, the author of The Geek Atlas (O'Reilly) has some travel tips for you. In the San Francisco Chronicle, John Graham-Cumming recently detailed five uber-geeky spots in California and Nevada that won't cost you a penny to visit. From visiting the Computer History Museum to checking out the Joint Genome Institute, even if you're traveling on a budget you'll find plenty to do.
The Texas-based Global Language Monitor announced yesterday that Web 2.0 is the millionth word in the English language. Dale Dougherty, editor and publisher of O'Reilly Media's MAKE magazine and creator of Maker Faire, coined the popular term in 2004. "I simply came up with a name to designate that there was a new beginning--new energy, new ideas, new approaches to problems--after the dot-com bust," Dougherty told The Press Democrat in 2007. "For me, Web 2.0 was a re-affirmation that the most amazing and innovative technology at hand was the Web, once again."
I just saw this piece in the weekly print edition of the Christian Science Monitor. It's a great overview of a lot of the offerings out there. In Your idea, "printed" in 3-D, Jesse Emspak writes: "'rapid prototyping' relies on a simple concept: building an object one cross section at a time, similar to laying down LEGO bricks to make a larger shape." The products they mention are priced out of reach for most of us, but there is an offering they didn't mention, the MakerBot CupCake CNC, a cheap ($750) rapid prototyper that you can build yourself. Last night, Dolores Labs hosted what was billed as the first-ever Mechanical Turk meetup, and I was fortunate enough to have been able to squeeze into what turned out to be a great series of presentations. While Amazon was the pioneer and remains the largest provider in the space, other services like Dolores Labs and Nathan Eagle's txteagle have emerged to expand the pool of users and turks. Read more.

This matrix shows four quadrants used to describe tastes found on Twitter, or related sites such as hashtag.org, tweestats.com, etc. The Y-axis is partly analytical and shows popularity (mostly through scraped numbers) or perceived popularity (in the future nominated by you). I've been resisting the temptation to write about Android. But after reading some of the blogs about Android netbooks, I can't keep quiet. Aside from being a Really Cool Idea, I don't have a lot to say about netbooks themselves. I've got an Android phone (thanks, Google), and I like it, and it would be nice to see the operating system move from the cell phone world onto other hardware. Netbooks are a logical step. But what's the next step after netbooks? How long will it be before we see "big" computers--full sized laptops and desktops, developer machines for serious coding, video and audio production, even servers--run on Android? Read more.
